Can herbs be grown indoors during the winter?

Can mint, fennel, basil be grown inside the house?

We have large patio door/window and I was wondering if I could plant some herbs in pots inside the house.

I'm also interested in growing ginger.

    Can it be done indoors?

They can all be grown indoors, but mint and fennel would be just as happy outdoors. Keep mint in a put on its own, it's invasive. Fennel is quite tall... about 4ft.

Ginger can be grown indoors, it's a lovely plant, nice scent. Hates direct sunlight is the only thing, so maybe away from the window would be better.
