Eagles or similar bird of prey

Hi. Can somebody tell if eagles or similar birds of prey are protected species. I know of somebody who had been keeping one in a cage in their house and actually killed it on purpose the other day.. Makes me sick to my stomach. The Gardai know about it but I'd be very doubtful they will do anything about it due to family history and links. Is there any official place this incident can be reported?

Protected unless you have a licence to keep a bird of prey.
Did this person catch this bird or did he own it? Either way a pure scumbag thing to do?
Was it an eagle or was it a hawk like a Harris hawk or red tail. These are most common birds of prey used for falconry

Mmm I doubt he had License for it.. Was in a small cage in terrace house in town so don't think it was being used for anything. I saw it dead on road other day outside said house and googling them birds you mentioned, I think it might have been red tail as he was kind of brown white fleck. Thought he had escaped and was hit by car only to find out the guy lost the plot and done it himself.

Cops were there for other damage caused to his own property but was just thinking bet they haven't even reported about the poor animal and I would like to even if it just means he won't be allowed get another one. We do have a local eagle club, do you think they might help? Just worried in case that's where he got it from.

Are you sure it was a BOP?? Most pet parrots have hooked beaks and some of them look a bit like a raptor.

Absolutely sure, it was well known that he had this bird of prey in a cage in his living room.. His kids telling their friends and I know somebody who saw it personally through their job. I'm confident if the guards were contacted they would confirm this too ( if they haven't already) but I want to make sure it has been reported to the right authorities. I'm not saying they aren't doing their job but it may not be top priority in this particular case.

I'd report it to the Gardai and local NPWS Ranger.

Just an update on this, I drove past the house the other day and the poor bird body was still there shoved under a burnt out car so got out and had a good look at it. Defo a BOD, possibly a raptor..., beautiful creature. Have rang the local IDWG office who were quite shocked about it and never told by the gardai just as I expected. Anyway I have details and name of lovely individual involved and they are checking re lisence etc so the b***** will hopefully never get his hands on one again.
