Wait until nearer the end when you get alien baby belly and he'll be able to see the baby rippling and moving under your skin. It is the weirdest thing ever!

We already saw it moving last week, so creepy! I'm hoping one friend in particular wil witness it because she is fascinated by pregnancy but really doesnt know much about it, I dont think she'll be expecting to see it move lol!

I'm sure towards the end she'll get a chance to see it. When you're v big in the last few weeks you're stomach is properly moving around. If you look up moving pregnant belly on YouTube you can see some crazy ones. It's like the baby is trying to burst out!

Great to hear people are feeling movements. I've felt air bubbles once or twice but nothing major.

The last two nights I've woken up very uncomfortable, not sure if it's a big movement (unlikely), braxton hicks (more likely) or just stretching ligaments (most likely).

On the names front Woshy we have a couple of boys names, one that we are quite set on and a heap of girls names, though we are both getting very strong boy vibes all the time. I do think we'll have to wait and meet this lentil first though, completely impossible to be sure about a name before then, most likely it will still be called lentil for some time.

Anyone close to Dublin interested in meeting up some time soon? Maybe once we're all past 20/22 weeks?

Funnily enough, I get boy vibes from your posts!

Re meet-ups: I was on the June 2013 thread and towards the end of our pregnancies we set up a private Facebook group (so nobody else outside the group can see anything you post or that you are even in the group). I still talk to those girls every day and meet up every so often. They've become good friends. It's been great to see their babies growing up and they were so supportive through my sickness. Would anyone be interested in doing that? That way if people wanted to arrange to meet up it can be done easily in private :)

@woshy I'm lucky enough my two sisters have kids and one is close by so I'm hoping they can help out plus my mam is the swaddle queen so she can't to teach me how to do that :D

As for names, we've a few boys names that we are set on. One in particular that I really love, and I've one girls name I'm dead set on too but we need to add to the girls list! Although I'm convinced it's a boy!

Tfak can we get Brixton hicks this early? I've just assumed what I was feeling was ligaments! Mmmm. I've been very uncomfortable too so my oh is on a mission to get me a body pillow!!!

And Id be well up for the private fb page/meet up thing too :)

You can get braxton hicks from about 14 weeks Allirog!

As a professional I will say swaddling a baby when unsupervised is not recommended by EU for safe sleeping, if it's day time and the baby is in the same room as you (supervised sleep) then that's ok but it's not recommended by the EU for unsupervised sleep - they'll go through all that in the antenatal class.

I get a boy vibe from your posts Woshy and a girl vibe from Allirog, think I get a bit of a girl vibe from Blueberry too.

I can't wait to get a body pillow, don't need one now - still sleeping flat on my stomach!

I have my hubby researching reusable nappies - any opinions on systems?

I use reusable nappies so happy to have a chat with you about it! If we do a meet-up I can bring different types along to show you. The best advice I received was not to get all one type or brand!

My body pillow is in the attic. His name is Cedric - we'll be getting him down soon.

My son hated to be swaddled, or in a sling or contained in any way, from the day he was born!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 339 ✭✭Allirog

Tfak thanks for the advice :) I never knew that!! Will still get my mam to show me how to do it, she's excited about that role :)

Anytime I think of reusable nappies I just think of leaks and unpleasantries :o maybe I need to hear more!!! :D

And I am in desperate need of a pillow! Since we discovered the pregnancy, I've only had one full night of uninterrupted sleep and that was over christmas. It's really bothering me now.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,429 ✭✭✭Woshy

I think I got my body pillow in Argos last time.

There can be a bit of leakage with reusables at the beginning before you get the hang of it but I get more leakage from disposables these days!

We swaddled my 1st, it really settled/soothed him and he was a great little sleeper once swaddled - they showed us how to swaddle in the antenatal class maybe it wasn't not recommended 5yrs ago because they certainly encouraged it in the hospital? The 2nd hated it, and was a terrible sleeper anyhow (reflux, grrrrrrr), still hates being confined, hates the buggy etc.. They're all different.

Any vibes on me tfak85?? Though i know i don't post very often. Are ye finding out?? We're not though we were tempted in the early weeks but going to leave it now. Ooooh baby just kicked, he's been quiet the past 2 days i was getting worried but that was a whopper, made my day :D

No vibes from your posts yet ariana, I'm sure we'll start to get them soon though! Not going to find out, no.

We do swaddle babies in the hospital, the sleep there is considered supervised sleep - there is always someone looking at them and it usually works for newborns, many bigger babies don't like it.

That would be great to see a few different ones Woshy, interesting what you say about mixing brands too. I heard of a company that will collect dirty liners and drop off clean ones, though I feel that would significantly add to the carbon footprint, probably less than all disposables but still....

That's terrible that you're sleeping so badly Allirog, I've been so tired that my sleep has been better the majority of the time - I would have woken once or twice a night pre-pregnancy anyway.

Bought and actual maternity dress today - first official maternity purchase! It's a spring/summer dress but I can wear it with tights now if I want.

Bought the book Bumpology today, written by a woman who writes for New Scientist, quite looking forward to reading it, as is the hubby, it debunks many myths of pregnancy and birth and gives the science behind things.

Does it have many pictures/diagrams? Had a quick look on Amazon and looks like something we'd enjoy, might purchase it for kindle

I get girl vibes from you Ariana!

Great tfak, we'll organise a meet-up in a couple of weeks and we can talk nappies. Hopefully a few Of us will be free :) I promise I'm not an internet psycho! I've never heard of a service to collect liners, I use disposable, biodegradable ones that flush down the loo. I can show you it all anyway! People always think I'm weird for using cloth nappies but they're not square cloths and pins like they used to be - things are a lot easier these days. They go on like disposables and then you just bung them in the washing machine!

My oh came home today and told me he had a surprise and I was to close my eyes... He got me a body pillow :D roll on sleep tonight!!!

I don't plan on using reusable nappies but I'd still love to meet up :D

Was telling my oh that work is killing me. I'm so so exhausted from it so I'm going to have to have a chat with my boss tomorrow. Not sure what she can do though!!

No pictures or anything so should be grand for the Kindle.

    Congratulations on the pillow Allirog!

That sounds like a good idea - you need to take care of yourself! No point wrecking yourself now. Hopefully you'll co e up with something together.

A meet-up will be fun - I'm sure we'll talk about all sorts! We can't go to the pub though :( we could do a Starbucks afternoon one weekend maybe or something like that?

Hi ladies hope your all doing well, I would love to join you all finally, I've been reading all your posts for the past few weeks but was a little nervous to join too early.
I'm due 22nd of June and this is my third baby, I have 2 boys already :)

Are any of you attending Mullingar hospital, it's my first time going there as had 1st in holles st, 2nd in the coombe so this is all new to me and just heard that they don't do anomaly scans which is a bit worrying so would love to hear from anyone who's been there before.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,304 ✭✭✭ariana`

Woshy i've used disposable in the past but interested in reusable now - not sure why now suddenly! What's the initial cost involved in buying the reusable part (how many would you need?) and what's the cost or hassle involved in buying the liners - are they easily available in Tesco/Dunnes or d'you have to buy from specialist shops? Sorry for all the questions ;)

keelan you're certainly getting around the maternity hospitals LOL!! Congrats on no 3, i'm also on no 3. I'm nervous of coping with 3 at the same time especially for the long Summer holidays with no school. What ages are you 2 boys? I haven't been to Mullingar so can't give you any advice there but could you get an anomoly scan privately? I wouldn't skip it if you can afford it at all. Should be about €100-€150 i believe.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,429 ✭✭✭Woshy

The initial cost to he the nappies does look high. One nappy can run from €10-€25 and you'd need 15-20 nappies per baby I'd say. Obviously younger babies need changing more often. In the long run it works out cheaper though. There's a big market for second hand ones too so you can buy those which is cheaper. It also means they hold their value for you to sell them on.

The liners aren't available in Tesco or Dunnes or supermarkets but you can get them in some Boots and in mothercare. Most people order them online. Lots of people don't use them at all.

I have a friend who is a reusable nappy manic! And she uses a washed water wipe as the disposable liner on top of the cloth liners, sounds odd, but it's actually great. The wet wipe puffs up a bit when if is washed and it's basically free, seeing as she has already used the wipe once and then throws it in the wash (not one she would use on the bottom, but any used for sticky hands + face) not sure where she got the idea, maybe by accident but it is brilliant. I wouldn't have been too pushed on reusable nappies before she had her baby but I have seen how great they are, minimum leaks, nice on babies skin, etc etc. Plus they are so cute!

Sorry for jumping on your month but it's such a good trick I thought I would share it!

Welcome! Crap about the scan, it sucks how some hospitals don't do them. I agree get s private one if you can!

Thanks - I must try that out! The nappies are great - I have some really nice patterns :)

I know Ariana feel like I'm doing a tour of all the hospitals at this stage but this will definitely be my last lol.

Yeah I'm going to book a private scan just found it weird that hospital don't do scans, I got one at 12 weeks and then won't get another unless going private, just bit scary that anything could be wrong and they wouldn't know..

Congrats on your 3rd too :) it's going to be interesting trying to juggle them all, I found going from 1-2 hard so don't no what to expect from this one at all.
My boys are 6 and 22 months, there was 4 years between them so think that's why it was such a shock..
    How old are yours?

Woshy I'm interested in reusables too, haven't a clue how they work though so going to do some research into it. Where's best place to find info online?

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,429 ✭✭✭Woshy

I would recommend joining the irish cloth nappies facebook page, the girls there are full of info and they have starter information. I would also recommend booking a loan kit from the nappy library they have. They will send you out a kit of different types to try before you buy. It's a great way to see what works for you before investing - to see what works for you and your baba. They organise meet-ups too and do demonstrations around the country. It's a great group!

They do a newborn loan (newborn nappies are smaller and aren't used for long so most people borrow them) or an older btp (birth to potty) set. I bought btp nappies and my little boy was in them from about 6/7 weeks. I used disposables before then.

I didn't get offered scan at 20 weeks either and the way it fell I was 20 weeks over xmas. I ended up not going private for one either. I spoke to a midwife who told me anything major would have been picked up at my 14 week scan, hope I don't end up really regretting not getting it done. Not very fair different treatment in different hospitals

Mine are 5 and 26 months. So they'll be 5.5yr & 2.5yr when this one arrives. I was fine going from 1-2, my 1st was a quiet baby/toddler, good sleeper, loved the buggy etc... But no 2 is wired, never stops going, going, going, into everything, won't sit in the buggy, and is leading the older one astray now as well, i can't take the 2 of them anywhere on my own without tearing my hair out  so i know i'll be house bound with 3 or at least until school starts again in Sept. I can't stop wondering what i've gone and done having another  But am thrilled & excited too of course and loving how my oldest talks about "our baby" :)

Aww - that is lovely :) I'm a bit worried going from one to two. My little boy is mad - very busy as everyone says. He doesn't sit still. This one I'm incubating feels pretty active so far too! There'll be just under two years between mine. Hopefully I'll share your experience and it won't be too bad!

It does seem unfair that some hospitals don't do anomaly/anatomy scans. In saying that though, Holles st don't really do proper full-on scans before the 20 week one. I had a few in the proper scanner when I was admitted due to the hyperemesis but otherwise it world have only been a very quick scan on a small machine at my 14 week appointment. I barely glimpsed the baby!

My scan is next week - I'm hoping the tine until then goes quickly :)

    https://www.facebook.com/groups/clothnappyireland/

And the cloth nappy library has a website at www.clothnappylibrary.ie. I'm debating whether or not to get the newborn kit or use disposables for a few weeks until the baba can use the btp nappies I already have. Hmm...
