Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Gareth Barry should have been sent off twice by now. He's completely off the pace of the game.

Barry should have been off and conceded a penalty at this stage.

Barry has money on himself for a red card

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,518 ✭✭✭matrim

Both probably should have been penos.

The only defence for the handball is that it probably would have smacked him in the head if his hand wasn't there

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,205 ✭✭✭Lucas Hood

Could have been off would have been very harsh though imo.

  • Correct call, protecting his face. Not deliberate.

Although I want Liverpool to get a penalty :P

All the years I watched football I didn't know that rule!

You can handle the ball to protect your face wow

That's how rugby was formed. When William Webb Ellis first picked up the football and started running with it, he answered the curious looks he received by stating "I'm just protecting my face, lads."

That rule doesn't exist, does it? And if he was protecting his face then it surely was deliberate?

The rule is deliberate handball but referees have interpreted this as also including the situation where a player puts their hands in a position which is likely to gain an advantage, i.e. blocking a shot on goal.

The shot would have hit row Z so not a penalty for me

Unless it was introduced this morning.

It's amazing the stuff you read on here from people who "follow" football !

    Of course it doesn't exist!

You can protect your face, as long as you are ok with giving away a penalty for deliberate handball!

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,438 ✭✭✭livinginkorea

If the rule exists then I would like to see the official rule.

If not then it is BS

    Great chance for Baines.

He jumped with his hands well in front of his face. What footballer jumps like that? If he is afraid of a football in the face then he is in the wrong sport

He is leaving out the most important part of that rule which is section C.1
" the above regulation only applies if player in question is playing for the team you support "

Terrible from Baines, he had so much time

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 677 ✭✭✭FernandoTorres

Markovic is very out of his depth

Both could have been pens. Baines should have done better there really.

    That's completely irrelevant.

It's the player's decision and not just what the probably outcome is that determines whether it's a foul. Barry didn't stick his arms out for the laugh or because he fancied living dangerously by handling a shot that was going into orbit.

If a shot's going wide and a defender leaps out and palms it out for a corner it's still a penalty.

Where the shot would have ended up has no bearing on the decision. The referee only has to judge if it was a deliberate handball, nothing else.

The only bearing it would have is on whether the player gets a red or yellow card. Red if it's going in the goal, yellow in all other cases.

If Liverpool or Everton get hammered. If we have another "slip". If Gerrard scores an overhead kick own goal...the most embarrassing thing I've seen all day is that "protecting his face" comment.

    Unreal. I'm still in bits.

Markovic is very out of his depth

He looks scared of everything. I'm beginning to get worried about him, I'm not writing him off but he needs to get up to speed quickly if he's to be starting games
