Bought an Ipad Mini but want to return it.

I bought an Ipad mini yesterday for college but I am not happy with it.
I have already used it to see what it was like. I have put it to it's factory reset and have kept all the original packaging but PC World say it cannot be returned if it has been used.

I am worried because I need something for college and I am not happy with the Ipad.
I spent over €400 on it.

    Any advice?

Best bet really is to either keep it or sell it on adverts at a loss.

Does a factory reset make it look like it hasn't been used? I could say I didn't use it. They say it is alright if the packaging is opened but it can't be used.

I would hate to be deceitful but I am desperate as it is so much money.

If they won't return it then there is not much you can do. You could always ask them if they'd return it and charge you restocking fee. If they don't agree to that then adverts or donedeal is probably your best bet.

I haven't gone into the store yet. I have been speaking to the Ireland and UK call centre which is the only way to contact PC world now.

Will they be able to tell if I have used it if I have reset it? As I said before I would rather tell the truth but I can't afford to lose the money involved.

Whether it's used or not I doubt they will return it once it has been opened. Also, I'm pretty sure with apple stuff that the warranty gets activated once someone has logged into an apple account on it, so all they would have to do is check the warranty status on it to see if it has been used.

They said it's okay if it has been opened as long as it wasn't used. I'll have to go into the store and try to reason with them. I have only spoken to the call centre and they said that the policy is they won't refund it but that I should go in and ask.

What's wrong with it? Do you require a bigger one? Maybe they will allow you to return it off something else or store credit?

I found out I need a laptop instead. I would take store credit at this stage.

I think a laptop makes more sense for a student. Hopefully they will do it.

Thanks. I can't get a number for Sligo PC World. All I can get is the Call centre for UK and Ireland. I need to speak to the manager of the store.

Just go into the store and ask whenever you are free.

I'm heading up tomorrow. Just have to forget about it for now because it is depressing me atm.

I don't really understand this. If you've opened it reset it to factory settings, pack it up as you got it and bring it back and see what they say. Of course they'll tell you over the phone that it can't be returned. If they won't take it back then worry about what to do next.

Not much help to the OP, but for reference the Apple online store as a 14 day return period.

What programs do you need a laptop for? The iPad might not be a complete loss if it is just for typing up reports. If you're doing development or need specialist software then obviously it is the wrong device.

Thanks, will they be able to know I used it if I reset it? Can they re sell it as new if I did?

Alldistance(online, phone or catalogue) consumer purchases in the EU can be returned within 14 days, it's not a special Apple feature.

Nah, I doubt it. If the plastic cover is still on and the like I doubt they'd look much further.

And yeah, they'll either re-sell it or send it back where it'll be 'refurbished'. I wouldn't worry about it anyway. Reset it, go in and give it a go. You could always try some sob story about it being a gift. If it doesn't work you're no worse off than you are this evening. If it doesn't work chuck it up on Adverts. I imagine it'll be gone within a day or two.

Thank you for the advice. I am really annoyed at myself for buying it so it helps to see some positivity from someone.
    Thanks

I doubt the PC world staff will forensically examine it. As long as you've done a factory reset (google it!) and haven't taken the plastic screen protector off you might have a chance.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,180 ✭✭✭hfallada

There is no reason for PC world to accept it as return. It's not in a saleable condition. It's a used good. There is no way for them to resell it.

Is there a security seal on the box that will be broken now that it's been open? They won't be able to sell it on if so as will be obvious to the next customer it has been openend previously. Maybe there isn't, I don't have an iPad but I do have a Samsung tablet and the packaging indicated to not accept it if the seal was broken. Would hate to go in to one if these shops and be sold a 2nd hand iPad at full cost tbh. Who's to know what happened to it previously. Don't mean you did anything to it op, just the idea of used expensive electronic items being resold in general without the subsequent customer's knowledge.

Depends on what you need it for. You can add a keyboard to it if that's the problem.

The say on their website that if the items has been opened and inspected then there will be no problem returning it within 14 days.
The only problem is whether it was used. I literally used it for 20 minutes and wasn't happy with it. I downloaded two apps to see what it was like and I put in my user accounts on certain websites (gmail, apple etc)
I reset it which means everything is deleted and it looks the same as before I turned it on at first.
I hope they will accept it back.

Is that PC World's website? Because if you didn't buy it directly from Apple I doubt what it says on Apple's applies to you.
