My LO is 10 months and his birthday is just a couple of weeks before xmas so I am trying to start stocking up on bits soon. I think we are going to get a bound photo book of his first year but that seems more like a keepsake/present for us than for him! Does anyone have any good toy ideas for a 1 year old?

We will get some books anyway but he has so many little bitty toys that are thrown all over our apartment so I would rather get a few nice toys than a million little bits! We had been looking at toot toot drivers sets but not sure. Any thoughts?

A veetch walker could be an idea

At that age an empty box/tin and a few blocks and they could spend ages filling it and emptying it, and trying to get the lid on/off, and then they move on building towers and knocking them over and thinking it's hilarious!

How about a mini ball pitt? Along these lines

Or a small slide for playing outdoors when the Spring/Summer comes again.

    Or a ride-on?

12mths is a bit of an inbetween age IMO but by his next birthday/Christmas he'll be 2 so how about something for an 18mth old and if you don't feel he's ready then hide it for a few months? Both mine loved Duplo from around 18mth-4yrs.

And also this Mickey Mouse cart! My son got so so so much use out of it!

Also you can never have enough books! Any family member who asked us what to get him I said books.

Books are a great idea - the cardboard ones that are easy for him to turn and can't tear!
    Also an activity cube: http://www.smythstoys.com/ie/en-ie/toys/pre-school-electronic-learning/c-467/wooden-toys-puzzles/p-1839/wooden-5-in-1-activity-cube/

Building blocks/lego also a great idea!

My son is one soon and I wanted to get him something sentimental so I tracked down some second hand copies of Ladybird Well Loved Tales (the old ones with the original illustrations). He'll have no interest in them right now but I wanted to get a gift that means something to me.

Of course mammy is all about the fun too so I also got the Little Tikes red and yellow car because it is something that was used to death in my own house growing up. We gave him a spin in Smyths and he was hilariously smug inside it.

We have both of those items and they were the best bits ever!
For a splurge gift you could get one of these.. Expensive but there's longevity of use!

We got my little boy a trike too like the one posted above. We got a red one so it was a bit more gender neutral in case we have a girl next.

He's 15 months now and it has been used so much. Along with the jumperoo when he was younger it's the best thing we've ever bought him. He loves it so much!

Thanks so much for all the ideas! I think it has made me realise how ridiculously spoilt our LO is as he has so much of the stuff already *must stop making casual trips to symths at the weekend* He has a trike and a walker and blocks! Oh dear!

We bought ours a picture to hang on their walls in their rooms for the first birthday. I figured they had enough already and families would be generous. I also wanted to get something that would last and be a nice keepsake for the future.

I ordered them from here and would highly recommend:

Oh I've bought several of those for friends. I don't usually like trinket or novelty gifts but those frames are really beautiful.

I'm in the same boat, little guy is also 10 months so looking at ideas :)

For our keepsake we are going to create a 2015 calendar, we took photos every month on the day he was born and we will use these in the calendar and also make a copy for the grandparents.

The little guys seems more interested in the boxes that things come in, and he plays more with the tags than the actual toys :D What he seems to like most is the mini beach ball he has, he likes to walk around the apartment kicking it and chasing it. Plenty of bumps from walking into chairs because of it though. He also has a set of cups that stack into each other. He likes to play with these and he has just started to figure out how to put them on top of each other to build a tower.

We've gotten our boy a trike for his first birthday in January, it's suitable for twelve months to three years, which is great! It's one of the ones with a handle on it, so you can push him along when he's small (kinda like a buggy), and then remove the handle when he gets bigger. His creche is just over five minutes walk from our house, so I think he'll love using it to get to and from creche!

We also got something called Ballapalooza - less than half price at the moment! It looks like great craic! :D

Sounds like my guy :) in that case he would probably like duplo Lego. Great for their motor skills too.
