Basel v Liverpool St. Jakob-Park (Basel) Kick Off 7.45 PM BST

    th?id=HN.608032932645572474&pid=1.7harryenfield_scousers.jpg

The two sides most likely to be battling it out to join presumed group table topper Real Madrid meet. The home side which got thumped 5-1 at the Berniebow are top of the Swiss Super League after 10 games with 22 points and typically 3 goals per game. Marco Streller now 33 is the primary goal getter with the bulk of the rest coming from midfield - Shkëlzen Gashi could be one to watch I think as judged by stats.

Here is a nice pic of the squad

    ByxwShpIEAAJkMk.jpg

    Mignolet, Jones
    Manquillo, Moreno, Enrique, Skrtel, Lovren
Gerrard, Lallana, Henderson, Markovic, Rossiter, Sterling, Suso, Williams
    Balotelli, Lambert,Borini

A win would be just perfect of course but a draw would be acceptable esp without Studge and the current uncertain mood within the side.

Being honest a win in both games vs ludogrets and a home win vs basel with a draw tonight =10 points anything vs real is a bonus in my opinion. that should be enough to get us through this group. If we managed to win tonight and had 2 good performances vs real in the next two CL games it would really give us confidence going into the last two games.

    0-2

If Liverpool perform above average should see them win this with bit to spare.

Draw would be good, clean sheet would be a rare treat.

Again would like to see Gerrard rested. Please.

Can't see that until Allen or Can are back.

Same team as Sat with Coutinho for Marko.
Lallana to continue his good form and get a goal...

I see Basel winning this to be bluntly honest. :(

On my way to the airport now, full day in Basel tomorrow with the possibility of watching the youths play in their afternoon game if I feel like it.

Can't wait for the real game though, massive game and if we can win it puts us in a very very strong position. First time going to an away game in Europe too, interested to see what the crowd will be like. Lallana to score in 1-0 win I'm gonna say

I'd watch the kids to be honest, at least you'll see goals :)

    3-1 Basel.

I expect Basel to go at Liverpool, which might work in our favour in this game.

1-0 Liverpool win, Gerrard with a penalty to silence his critics.

3-0 Basel. Liverpool to start out on top before goal against the run the play knocks the fight out of them.

    Only two CBs in squad?

I'm a bit meh on underage games from a supporters point of view

I watched Basel vs Real Madrid and Basel did not deserve that scoreline. They were attacking right up to the last few minutes. Some decent players and forwards that are fast and strong.

I cannot see us winning this given the form we are in. Loss to Basel forthcoming.

Really? I think its great to see promising young players move up through the ranks, then stall and get released to end up playing for Notts County :p

Just going by list in OP. Williams can indeed play CB according to official site, only seen him in midfield myself

a 1 - 0 win for us would be amazing but to be honest I see this finishing 1 all. Dont think we have more than a goal in us without Sturridge, hopefully I'm wrong.

Would like to see Rodgers really show his aptitude for European Football, play a solid counterattacking team with wingers, rather than wing backs.

    I'd like to see
    Mignolet
    Manquillo Skrtel Lovren Enrique
    Henderson Gerrard Lallana/Lucas
    Sterling Balotelli Moreno

Think this gives us our most solid platform with players available, with plenty of compactness, ideal to snatch a win, maybe not in the fashion we were used to last season, but certainly a win we would all take by any means necessary. Thats what European football is all about.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 452 ✭✭NEDDURC

I'd go with the following team.
    Mignolet
    Manquillo Skrtel Lovren Moreno
    Henderson Lucas Lallana
    Sterling Balotelli Borini
Leave Gerrard out - the goals are just masking his failings now. A rest last week helped in the derby too. Lucas I think will be more disciplined in defence tonight. Get Sterling and Borini to work back.

Defence needs more games together so sticking with first choice for now.

Same. Not surprisingly it's not Liverpool fans thinking they'll win! Anyone who has watched Liverpool recently knows they'll struggle to score and almost certainly concede.

Liverpool haven't a hope. There's holes all over the defence, whic the Swiss should make cheese of.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 60,928 ✭✭✭✭Agent Coulson

The Swiss to roll over Liverpool.

I see what we are doing now.

Hopefully the Liverpool forwards can shift out of neutral and score a few.

Hopefully it won't be to taxing but I think the Swiss are banking on there haven being secure from foreign threats.

Unless we have a great team performance i can see Basel walking over us.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,319 ✭✭✭emo72

And I'm going to be a "negative ninny" too. These are a good team and I don't think I've ever seen them play bad. We need to play as good as we did against Everton and have a bit more luck in front of goal.

The good thing is whenever loads of us are pessimistic we win comfortably.

We'll struggle for a draw imo but id take a point away from home

They were utterly awful in the europa quarter-final second leg against Valencia last season. Got absolutely pulverised.

As I said. I'm only recalling all the great things about them! They're flying in their league though. 3 goals per game!

Do these guys still play on a plastic pitch?

Either way i can see nothing less than a Basel win.

    3-0 to the home team.

  • Subscribers Posts: 32,855 ✭✭✭✭5starpool

I hope we aren't 3-0 down in half an hour this time, as there is no way we recover from that the way we are playing, not that the 3-3 draw was good enough last time we went there. I'd take a draw now though.

If liverpool have any hope of being a team at the business end of the league they should win with a bit to spare

That's not how football works. Away champions league matches against decent sides (which Basel are ) are always difficult
