Oh yeah I remember the time when Dubya took that Southwest flight down to Texas, it was so funny seeing him trying to fit the Nuclear football brief case into the overhead locker it just barely fitted I though he was going to have to check it and cost him an extra 50 bucks.:D

No I am not accusing American's in general of being ignorant. I am however pointing the finger of ignorance and hate at those in American who trot out the socialism bug bear and those who jump on that wagon. Many of whom I would contend could not even define what socialism is. Just calling a spade a spade. Those who put forth the socialism bug bear do so using the word in a clearly pejorative manner and sadly they have a significant audience who buys into the ignorance and hate they are selling.

Ahh so we finally have come to the great ahh well those Scandinavian countries are only small little countries so the comparison falls. You throw out vague statements but not a single argument that is specific about why a specific socialist programme cannot be used in a big country like American and only in a small country. Social Security is a socialist programme which is used nationally in the United States. Exactly what socialist programmes cannot work in the United States beacuse it is a big country and why not?

I never labled the United States as a socialist country. I did however point out that it has parts of its system which are socialist already such as social security, the fire service, federal highways etc and that these are very popular.

As for my point about Sanders chances in a presidential election I was responding to your dismissal of his chances by showing polling data that says he leads the current top Republican candidate in most head to head national polls while at the same time being behind Clinton nationally in every poll for the Democratic nomination. Thus my point that winning the Democratic nomination is harder for Sanders then it would be for him to win a presidential election. You said if Sanders was to win the Democratic nomination:
"that virtually gifts the election to the Republicans"

The current national polls do not support that argument.

his platform was overshadowed by a quirky call for a switch to the metric system.
Obviously he should be hung by his thumbs for the temerity.

O'Malley will stay a bit longer and up his profile more, I'd say. Reckon he has his eye on a possible VP job.

There's a telling difference between those two examples though. Obama wasting money on a Palm Springs golf trip is not nearly as bad as Republicans wasting money on taxpayer's money because Obama's golf trip was not designed for the sole purpose of attacking a presidential or political campaign. The same can't be said for the benghazi committee.

How much of the money to go golfing was actually spent on the golf itself because that's the point your trying to make here?

Surely a large portion was spent on his security and entourage i.e it costs that much for him to go anywhere be it for business or pleasure. He's entitled to do both!

Eleven hours of grilling her and they have nothing at all. Years of investigations and millions of dollars.

And she stood up to them really well. She was calm and composed and well prepared in the face of babbling grand standing republicans who were desperate to pin anything they could on her.

When we get the money out of politics it will be a moot point.

No here is the point your made:

"Scandinavian countries have small, homogeneous populations and their own specific cultures, values, and political traditions, which cannot easily be mapped onto a much larger country with an enormous diversity of populations and subcultures."

You were clearly putting out there the classic ahhh well the scandinavian countries are so small and America is so big so the comparison falls argument. Your throwing out vague statements but not a single specific socialist programme that cannot work in the United States because it is a big country.
Again social security is an example of a socialist programme that is used nationally in the United States. Exactly what socialist programmes cannot work in the United States because it is a big country and why not?

I have no such assumption that Sanders would beat Trump the current leader in the race for the Republican nomination. I simply pointed out that he leads Trump in most current head to head national polls which refutes your point that Sanders wnning the Democratic nomination would in your own words:

"that virtually gifts the election to the Republicans"

Sanders winning the Democratic nomination would without doubt be a major upset however if some how he did he acccording to the polls would be very competive in a presidential election.

I think it's amusing that Paul Ryan will only take the Speaker position, on the condition he gets paid family leave. ;)

    Like Sweden?

Sure. The working theory being that if you encourage a strong family unit in children's young life they are going to wind up better adults with fewer emotional and behavioral disorders. France for example claims to have a near zero rate of ADD/ADHD. However, it is really hard to overthink foreign case studies on psychology though, because every culture will tend to look at psychology differently, and study it differently - eg. if Spain under-diagnosed cases of depression, you wouldn't have accurate data to consider.

I'm unsure of the utility of comparing a world power with a regional one like Sweden (whose own era came to an end in the 18thC) but as part of my attempt to better learn the language, the book Almost Perfect People by Booth shows that while there are many good innovations there are the also many areas of social issues that are not easily captured by statistics.

In peoples honest opinions here what are the odds of Donald Trump either being the GOP entry or being a third party candidate?

No chance being GOP could well run as an independent, has said he would. Great news for the Democrats. It's reported that Trump rang Bill Clinton and Clinton told him to go for it. He must have had a great laugh after that call.

If Trump and Sanders both run as independents it will be the most fascinating election in history. Imagine: Bush or Rubio vs Clinton or Biden vs Sanders vs Trump

Trump continues to run clearly in 1st place for the GOP nomination in recent polls, with Rubio closing but still a distant 3rd. The Huey Long "King Fish" entertainment strategy of Trump is still working with Republican voters. Then again, it's a long way to November 2016, and the American voter can be fickle if past presidential elections are a measure.

Getting mixed reports on Trump Super PACS, with The Washington Post claiming he has one that favours his presidential election, while Trump claims that he doesn't want the money from 9 Super PACS.

Can Trump write-off a billion of his personal campaign funds over several years after the election? If so, it will be the tax payer paying for his election.

Only anecdotal and not empirical, but none of my female friends would vote for Trump; rather all would turnout to vote against him. I doubt this opinion will change, no matter what he says in the next 12 months.

theres also a lot of females in the US who would vote for clinton purely because she's a woman, just as a lot of african americans registered to vote for obama in 08 just because he was black. A very very fickle bunch.

Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson said on Meet the Press Sunday that he wanted abortion outlawed under all circumstances, including incest and rape; e.g., forcing the raped woman (or pregnant female child) to carry the rapist's child 9 months through childbirth.

I think he greatly underestimates the importance of the voter base he is writing off
