If you're on Windows 8 or above you have little need for antivirus, just ensure Windows Defender is activated.

    don't be so naive

    ^^ Microsoft Security Essentials

Which I believe is now renamed Windows defender on Windows 8/8.1

Avast is top at the moment I believe,

Saying that I use Windows defender on my PC but I'm careful what I do when on the PC / internet

    Just 4 days to go.
What's a good alternative to AVG (free of course!)?
Have you tried repasting in the license key from the start of the thread - I originally used it on AVG 2014 - then when the other posters started mentioning about the expiry / illegal warnings I got a 1 year license free for AVG 2015 which was going to last til June (as I had previous trial license on PC), but on the off chance I pasted in the key from the thread and Bingo - the license is back for Feb 2018 - Worth a shot maybe?

Have tried that a few times and all seems to go ok. But a few days later the warning reappears with the countdown continuing on as from before my attempted update

My AVG expired the other day....and yet it's still going, saying everything is active. Even updated itself tonight

mine went loop the loop last night flashing warnings etc, pasted code again rebooted then said I have enough, downloaded bit defender, tried to install but avg linkscanner decided it needed to install which stopped the bitdefender installing, my advice is if you are sick of the carry on ref avg and the code delete or let bit defender delete all of avg and after 6 months look at it again. I personally had enough of avg so the free bit defender will do 4 now.

If you were installing but defender you should an uninstalled avg first otherwise you have one antivirus fighting the other
Avg free trial is good enough for me I've heard bad stories about bit defender
Avg free version is also an option for people

To get the trial or free version just uninstall avg and it will give you the option

I used the first code below and it accepted it no worries....

I even rebooted the PC and it is still valid for 4 years.....

Is there some information I am not seeing? I installed the software as per the opening post. I tried the key on the opening post and it didn't work. I then tried all of the codes on post #266 and I am still not getting any joy.

I see where I was going wrong now. Computers and me don't mix very well. Many thanks.
