    Not following

In the last few preview's right clicking the skype icon and selecting quit skype does nothing, you need to end it from task manager.

MS has sets of keys for people needing a temporary key for installation.
I used one myself for my windows 8 key to get 8.1 clean installed.

When I did it, there was a skip option at the bottom, not very visible though.

I'll try again and take another look.

    No joy.

I ran Windows Update yesterday morning and grabbed all outstanding downloads and it's been at 'windows 10 upgrade reserved' since. So after lots of faffing around (I tried forcing windows update from an admin shell, clearing the downloads folder mutiple times etc etc) I'm now two hours into the ISO download via the upgrade tool and at only 19%. Bloody hell, hopefully it goes smoothly from there as then next week I'll be attempting a clean install onto a new build once all of my new hardware arrives.

OK, pleased enough with the upgrade so far, definitely faster than 8.1 on both laptop and desktop. Just one question when I try to sign up for one month trial for music pass I get this message "To buy things, your Store region needs to match the region for your Microsoft account. Switch Store region." but it already seems to be the same. Anyone have a solution?

    Thanks.

Are people forcing the upgrade somehow, or has it just appeared in a notification.
Nothing has appeared so far for me, so wondering if there is something I need to do

    I've gone this route: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

I tried the 'upgrade' option first but got the 'something happened' message, I'm now downloading the ISO through the 'prepare media for a different machine' 2nd option.

Anyone else find problems when booting sometimes.

Sometimes the internet can never connect until I reboot. Critical error with the start button and tiles

Finally downloading on my desktop. I changed my auto update settings to automatically install and ran wuauclt /updatenow

I'm having trouble booting via the power button. A bit of messing with the psu switch on the back gets me going.

I've seen a few people having this issue..

One solution that worked for a few was to make sure that the "download updates" option was chosen.. People trying to upgrade with the "update" option on were getting the error you saw..

Worked fine once they allowed it to update itself along the way.

Which setting are you referring to? Turning off windows update?

I have 10 I installed on both my tablet and my laptop. Looks lovely so far and it seems like a nice improvement from 8.1.

However, my tablet (Asus me400c), seems to have lost the ability to change screen brightness in the upgrade, and I can no longer adjust it in any way, be it through the power icon or control panel/system settings. So I'm stuck on full brightness and doomed to terrible battery life until I find a fix! :o

How long has it taken you to update? I'm upgrading from Win 7 on an SSD and I made sure I had space. It seems to be using my secondary drive for something as I can hear it clicking away. It's been over an hour and I'm using a fast PC.

My download is available now . - How long does it take - If I start at 5pm some evening will it be complete by midnight ?

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,271 ✭✭✭TireeTerror

Maybe this will help you guys. This was something I remember from years ago when I had a problem with installs taking ages. I literally tried it as soon as I posted previous message. I ejected a DVD Rom (gta v) from the cd drive. In 10 seconds the install jumped and is now finished. It had been waiting at 55/56% for a long long time until I opened the cd drive.

€45 Linx 7 is now activated too :D

Had to abandon and wipe a previous no longer functioning preview version of Windows 10 and then I had to install the X86 Windows 8.1 with Bing (exactly that version) from scratch (ISO). Once I realised that, things were easy. I did not have to enter a key installing this version of Windows 8.1. It picked up the key from the BIOS, activated automatically. Installed Windows 10 Home X86 from the ISO and it kept the tablet activated.

oooh all these notification sound FX remind me of the days when I used to have AOL as my ISP. Its like a flashback to the dial up days.

ISO download at 33% almost 4 hours in, it's like being back on dialup trying to download the latest 100MB Counter Strike patch :o

Even though I went back to 8.1 on my main laptop, I've just installed on a low spec one, it went fine but took nearly 2 hours!(compared to about 45 mins for this one) There is a couple of specialised drivers on it but they seem to be working OK. Still think it looks crap but at least I can keep an eye on developments

I had the Technical Preview installed on a Dell Venue Pro 8 tablet, and I had the same problem. I decided to roll it back to WIn8 last week, to make sure that it got the proper "retail" version of WIn10, and it looks as though Automatic brightness is working properly now.

I'd post a screenshot showing the settings, except that my Windows+VolDown is starting up the screen reader instead of taking a screenshot!!

I have a Dell laptop I upgraded and the screen brightness control didn't work on that either. I went into Device Manager, uninstalled the existing driver, choosing to delete the driver files, and rebooted. It then reverted to the generic MS screen driver, but I then let device manager scan for hardware changes and automatically install the driver again, and all is now OK.

Thanks! I tried that but haven't had any luck. I also noticed that my tablet isn't sleeping properly either. The screen turns black but remains on. Cleary both of these issues are display driver related, but I'm not sure where to go from here. I may be forced to revert!

I've really had bad luck with Windows 10 on my three systems:

Laptop: Mandatory driver updates messing with my video card.
Tablet: Suddenly decided that it's not compatible and wouldn't let me install.
Desktop: Upgraded but it was very unstable, clicking Start would hang the shell and even Task Manager was hanging.

I want to try a clean install on the desktop but after my experience so far I'm thinking I might just hold off for a while. It's leaving a bad taste in my mouth.

You could try a reset through the settings, it's sorted out problems like that for me before.

Interesting that, Windows 10 installed without a hitch on both my laptops but wouldn't install on my Windows 8.1 tablet. Did you get the "something went wrong" error message or was it something else?

Do a complete wipe and clean install (forget about reset or any of that malarky - complete wipe is what is always best in a troubleshooting situation) of whatever OS you had (presuming W7 / W8 / W8.1). Make sure all drivers work and that it activates then install W10 from within windows with the usb with the correct version of W10 that you created with mediacreationtool.
I may be forced to revert!

Don't give up that easily! This ain't XP / Vista / W7 / W8 when they first came out and were impossible to get some working drivers for, leaving the machine unworkable

MS have learnt from mistakes in the past. This is working well and stable. If something is not working it can very likely be fixed with a different driver (which should not be too hard to find for almost all mainstream hardware)

No, on the tablet the Windows Update download failed and after a reboot the tray icon application was saying that my video card wasn't compatible and linked me to new PCs.

Its not too bad, as the tablet is definitely a secondary/home system that is purely for browsing really. But thus far the Asus website has been useless, as their driver support is atrocious. I may go and look to Intel for some drivers from them directly for the integrated graphics. Sure anything is worth a shot at this stage!
