Just looking at the second image there, the back of the JCB is so low, then you can see two wheels very close together. The image doesn't look good at all :(

bianchi unconscious and going to hosp by road

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,886 ✭✭✭_rebelkid

Bianchi is being transferred by ambulance. Helicopter was stopped from taking off by the weather. FIA confirming he was unconscious when they arrived.

FIA press rep says driver is unconscious and has been send to hospital by ambulance with police escort as the helicopter is unable to fly.

They should put a skirt around the higher parts of those vehicles.

Tracks everywhere use vehicles just like that for recovering the cars.

I mean for not allowing the race to be started at 11am, they said no to the FIA twice.

These interviews are just cringe, asking Button about his early pitstop.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,354 ✭✭✭smellslikeshoes

The real question isn't if the race should have been started earlier etc It's why was the JCB in a run off area without a safety car with the conditions the way they were.

Well it's still up to FIA to run the race safely, conditions for most of race were fine

Even when accident happened lots of cars were okay on inters so conditions weren't the worst they'd been

JCB doesn't look too damaged at back, might be sign it wasn't too severe an accident, would hope, anyone know what corner it was?

Maybe a bit of a side issue but they need to take a hard look at the late starts for Asian races in general. Malaysia has more chance of evening thunderstorms, Australia has long shadows, China is often touch-and-go. I know ratings are all-important but late afternoon races throw up their own complications.

Immediate concern for myself was the lack of any replay of it. We know they had a camera angle there as we saw Sutil go off there. So either that camera was following a car through the Degna corners or.... Well it was too bad to show. Even as the drivers were in the cool down room, the FIA official with the fist into the open palm gives credence that this might very well hae been a case of going in nose first.

As.I am sure is the case with many of you, thoughts are with Jules. Might be a while yet before we hear anything given the distance from a major hospital and the many external factors in place (weather, forcasts, not bringing the start forward) will likely lead to many hard questions been asked after this event, regardless of the outcome.

True the conditions really weren't that bad, but it will come up.
I don't think a JCB would take all the much damage from an F1 car.
The worry would be it going under the back of it and the driver hitting the JCB.

Ever since 1994, FOM don't show accidents that are as serious as this. Last time a TV company did was Simoncelli in Moto GP. A crash with a result like that is not something you want repeated by a broadcaster.

Sounds fairly similar to what happened to Maria de Villota, and she lost an eye as a result. This seems a bit more serious though, and I'm really hoping Jules is ok.

Agreed, which was why I figured even before the commentary picked up that there might be an issue when we were getting the stationary shots of the scene. It was first indication that we were staring at a serious issue here.

Obviously this is just my usual waffling but I find it hard to imagine an impact to the head from the JCB ending with good news.

The interviews with the drivers looks like the know something.

BBC decided not show Sutil interview just there

Guess they want to be careful whats said live

I suppose it's easy in hindsight to say a safety car should have gone out right away, but if it had gone out there would probably have been no end of complaining about health and safety gone mad.

  • Registered Users Posts: 8,975 ✭✭✭finnharpsboy

Ted looks quite shaken on sky, i wonder does he know something and not saying just yet?

I had the same thought. Hope he's ok.

Honestly if they're going to be using those vehicles then a Safety Car probably is necessary.

He didn't give any details on the Sky interview. Looked very subdued, understandably. Ted said the medical helicopter did take off just not with Jules in it, possibly because local hospital might not have helipad. Fingers crossed for him. :(

did the conditions get worse after the red flag? Surely if the helicopter couldn't fly the cars shouldn't have been running.

I'd imagine there's information they don't want to repeat on-air. I can't imagine any initial information or reactions from the scene are going to be great news.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,565 ✭✭✭losthorizon

I knew it wasnt Sutil from the start as there seemed to be a shot of him sitting by the side of the road with his head in his hands looking disconsolate.

Very soon after a caption with Bianchi came up and they switched to the Marussia garage. Surprised the BBC never copped on to this.

Since Sennas death there have been no deaths or major injuries in actual racing but there has been in recovery situations in testing and races and among marshals and its perfectly clear this is a situation that the FIA has to look at.

While the actual racing itself is as safe (f thats the correct term) as it will ever be recovery situations are not. Indeed we had a marshal killed at the Canadian GP two years ago.

I really hope Jules is OK.

Apparently it was a choice to send him by road rather than air.

Heard on the radio that the Helicopter could take off but its too foggy at a higher altitude for it to fly.
