Cake for a first birthday party

    Hi,

My daughter will be celebrating her first birthday this Sunday and I was hoping to bake a cake.

Does anyone have a straightforward cake recipe they would recommend. It needs to suit adults for the most part and some kids under the age of four.

I am fairly good at following recipes and have some experience making scones and brownies and that kind of thing - just never tried a cake before!

The party is at 2pm too if that makes a difference.

    Thanks

Hi, it might help with replies if you let people know what size and shape tin you're planning to use. That way you'll only get recipes / suggestions that use the right quantities.

I have two round 8 inch tins. And there will be about 12 guests.

    Lovely simple cake :)
If you'd prefer something a bit different, iced and seasonal, I made several of these last autumn (due to demand :D )

The recipe suggests using 9 inch cake tins, but I made it in a large oblong tin and in 2 smaller square tins and just adjusted the cooking time and lowered the temperature accordingly. I used butternut squash instead of pumpkin at least once and it was just as good. Nicest cake I've ever made :)

Can't go wrong with a chocolate fudge cake for birthdays.

This one is strong enough to hold fondant if you wanted to do some colourful childrens decorating. You can buy fondant and just roll it out.
