Puppy with foster dog/reserving a dog in rescue

Okay, so most of you know I have Lindy here. She is an absolute gem and I love her to pieces. Manners of a lady and so good with my daughter and other dogs of all sizes, genders and ages. She's due to leave us soon (not sure of the date) but a localish rescue has posted pictures of some pups, and before I knew what I was saying myself and OH decided to drive out on Sunday coming to see them (just for a meet and greet).

We know there is a chance we will find the right pup there and we were wondering what people's experiences are with taking a pup into a home with a young adult dog (Lindy isn't over 3 and very playful as she doesn't understand toys but will play instinctively with other dogs). If it isn't recommended and we happened upon the perfect pup, what would a policy be for reserving? If I handed over the full adoption fee (for a receipt, obviously), how long would a rescue keep a dog?

What age are the pups shashabear?
And what sort of environment are they being kept in now, and for the duration before you could take yours home?

I'm not 100% because I haven't seen them yet. They are in a rescue in the Louth area that is known for dealing with exotics, if that tells you what the conditions are like? They have pups ranging from 8 weeks to 8 months and I did think if we went young, a socialised young adult might be good for them to help ease the transition away from the litter but at the same time I wouldn't want to upset Lindy. We were considering booking Sunday if we found a suitable friend and coming back the following Thursday/Saturday (closed on Friday) but I was wondering if they would consider that too long and perhaps give the pup away?

Hmmmm, I hope I don't get into trouble for this, but if you want to rescue, I'd suggest going elsewhere. See if you can find any other rescue in Ireland that has so many pups in different age ranges ;)

Okay, I know where you're talking about.
Would you not opt for a reputable rescue instead?
Sorry to be blunt, but I would not deal with them.

Really? Yeesh, had no idea it had any sort of a bad rep - my partner had a friend that dealt with them regularly on the exotics side of things!
I'd take your word for it! :(

I'm sure its down to the rescue whether they'd allow you to reserve a dog and hang onto it for you. However I'd imagine most rescues are under a lot of pressure and would rather rehome to someone sooner than later. So if someone suitable wanted the pup before you they might consider giving it to them.

I volunteer at a rescue - we have a shelter packed with dogs - we will hold on to a dog/puppy if someone has reserved it. In fact we have been known to hold on to a dog for weeks, because the family who reserved him was so mad about him!! (course he was the loveliest dog you ever came across, I would have had him myself but had a sick dog at the time - he now has his own sofa we hear :)) So yes, rescues will hold on to animals for owners...

It's good to know that places will do it. The problem we have is that we don't know what pup we will get so we can't really make decisions on things like food and a crate size etc so it would be great to reserve one and make sure the house is prepared before they come home!
