Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Loukanikos aka riot dog who confronted riot police during anti austerity protests in Greece has died.

Sad news from Greece – Loukanikos, the valiant dog who faced down Greek riot police during the height of the eurozone crisis, has died.

Greek media report that Loukanikos (Greek for sausage) passed away peacefully, having retired from protests in 2012.

Loukanikos began hitting the headlines in 2010, when the stray hound began appearing in the front line of anti-austerity protests.

So a dog barked at some cops? How many days of mourning are they going to have?

He featured in Time magazine and was famous around the world. He's probably done more as a dog than you have as a person.

But what did he actually do? From what's being said in those brief articles, it seems he got excited and barked at people. Not something out of the ordinary for a dog. Pulled a kid from a burning building? Hell, I'll got to the funeral. Barked at people? Meh.

He was the hero Greece deserved not the hero Greece needed.

I think the main point was the dog was protective of the people rather than the police, it was able to distinguish between who the real aggressors were. The dog acted towards the protesters like a dog would towards its owner if its owner was being attacked.

I know its mostly symbolic but it became a huge narrative

Take a look at any crime thread on AH. All those angry tabloid-readers raging about lenient sentencing in Ireland and how the country's sinking into chaos. Have any of them done more to deserve an RIP than Riot Dog?
