Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Germany v Ireland from 7pm on RTÉ2, RTÉ Player and 2fm.

    Euro 2016 Group D qualifiers, 7:45pm:

Ireland lost 6-1 and 3-0 to Germany during our doomed World Cup 2014 qualifying campaign but captain Robbie Keane isn't dwelling on the past. Keane said Ireland are "a different team" and are "going into this game on a good run and with a lot of confidence".

Coleman and McCarthy out for us.

Schweinsteiger, Reus, Ozil, Kramer and now Schurrle out for the Germans.

Not expecting anything but would be quite happy to see this.

So this is Martin O' Neil's first real test as manager ????

Germany clearly haven't been playing as well as they can. If there was a right time to play them, it's now. Unfortunately Poland have also taken advantage of this.

Jesus I remember that goal like it was yesterday, great times.

And only two truly world class ones (Muller and Kroos). Nothing to be afraid of. Ireland should be able to give them a good game and if we take our chances like Poland did we could come away with a result.

Keane to repeat '02 with Doyle in the Quinn role? Probably not, but I can dream...

Even with their injuries, Germany should have more than enough to win, especially considering our best 2 players are also missing.

    Harsh on Hummels!

Neuer is easily world class. Gotze not far off it either.

Draxler and Gotse are better than any player Ireland have ever had in their positions.

Haha seriously there's not one player in that German squad I'd say no to. Even at club level.

    COME ON IRELAND!!

Schweinsteiger, Reus, Ozil, Kramer and now Schurrle out for the Germans.

Not to mention Khedira, Gomez, the two Benders :D and the surprise retirees Lahm and Merte. I won't even go into the long term injuries. I'm still hopeful we'll have enough to see us through this spell, but if there ever was a good time to play us it's now.

This will either be magical or we'll get bashed. There's no middle ground here.

I'd have gotze down for a goal if he gets his game.

    German team is in:

(4-2-3-1) Neuer (C) - Rüdiger, Hummels, Boateng, Durm - Ginter, Kroos - Bellarabi, Götze, Draxler - Müller

Well the term world class is being a bit abused these days but I'd have Goetze possibly there too. (Almost forgot about Neuer, too)

Cautiously optimistic about tonight. With all the injuries the Germans have, I think we have a chance. Just need to start the game with confidence and see what happens. COYBIG!

I can't escape the feeling that the Germans are going to be pretty riled up after losing to Poland le weekend and are going to bury us.

If it wasn't for that, I'd be hoping to maybe get a point out of the game with the German squad being so limited at the moment.

Fancy Ireland to get a draw here at least. Maybe even sneak a win.

strong team, that deep ginter and kroos will be trouble, though it might leave some space for mcgeady to get nippy down the wing.

wtf is that team. we will get massively overrun in midfield

Well I didn't see this coming. Happy our two best wingers are in but unsure what role Walters will play. Big target man perhaps?

    Well, I'd hope so anyway.:P

I'd be fairly certain that team is going to get annihilated by Germany.

  • Moderators, Regional East Moderators Posts: 23,231 Mod ✭✭✭✭GLaDOS

Irish team is set out to contain anyway, Keane will spend most of the match pretty isolated. Don't think our defence is really up for the long periods of pressure that are set to come.

    3 0 Germany

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

Probably but even then. If there ever was a thing that defines a world class player I would have thought scoring a classy goal that decides a WC final would be up there.

Hoolahan left out is a bit of a surprise I guess. The guy will be thinking 'what do I have to do to get in'. I'd say the thinking is Ireland need a bit of steel at first anyway.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,796 ✭✭✭✭Pudsy33

Actually I'm surprised Gibson isn't playing, he's better then Quinn.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,999 ✭✭✭Backstreet Moyes

So what is it McGeady out of position behind Keane.
Walters out of position on the wing.

Why not a midfield 5 with Hoolohan pushing forward.

    ----McClean----Quinn----Hoolohan
    Whelan
    McGeady

Hoolahan surely would be better option than Walters

    So negative by MON.
Why not just play Wes and have a go at them...

Germany to be 2 up by half time thus ending the game for us... Too late for changes then Martin.

Don't think he was ever going to start. I'd say we won't see much of him in the away games anyway.

Thought Long would start tonight given that if the Germans are vulnerable to anything it is a bit of pace up front.

He needs to become less creative and offer less going forward.

Hoolyhun will be saved if we're chasing the game I'd say.

Can't believe he hasn't started Long, what was the idea of bringing on Doyle and Murphy instead of him on Saturday, seems like Long is getting a rough deal again from an Irish manager.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,259 ✭✭✭TheRedDevil10

German Subs: Weidenfeller, Zieler, Mustafi, Rudy, Podolski, Kruse.

Ireland Subs: Westwood, Elliot, Clark, Pearce, Gibson, Hendrick, Hoolahan, Pilkington, Brady, Long, Doyle, Stokes.

When he didn't come on against Gibraltar I presumed he was being saved for tonight.

If Trap picked that team there would be a meltdown.
