    Hi,

Our detailed plans have been submitted and we are awaiting approval in order to start.

We are considering building a timber frame house – our initial plan was to put up a timber frame and then build an exterior wall. However, after seeing something online I’m wondering how suitable would be to put up sheets of insulation boards on the exterior, cover it with wire mesh and then render it.

Would it result is a sufficiently strong building and would the cost be prohibitive? Does this type of approach work okay in our climate and how much should it cost?

What other options could we consider that would be cheaper/better than blocks?

    Thanks.

First off, check the Cert on the TF system you're looking at. Unless it allows for external insulation, you can't use it. Ditto for the insulation you're looking at - if it doesn't have a Cert for use on TF you can't use that either.

I personally think it's a bad idea in any case, as a cavity is there to protect from the ingress of water to the frame. In dryer, less windy and lower humidity climates is less of an issue, but we have the Atlantic to deal with.

There's also the issue of window cills, plinths, reveals and footpath etc to consider.

What is your primary reason for wanting to do it?

We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

No real reason, just looking into alternatives to blockwork, if any suitable ones exist.

Loads, but almost none cheaper than blocks tbh

Any recommended timber frame manufactuers you know of or things to look out for in a timber frame structure?

    Thanks for your input.
