Pffft, they were in Dun Laoghaire harbour there last week, hiding behind the car-ferry. They said they had just popped in for a guinness, but the Gardai were well suss. The Submarine bar is nowhere near Dun Laoghaire.

Subs are a lot more common in our waters than people may think.

    (I'd imagine)

Ah those damn Russians up to their old fun and games again.

They'll do anything to get their hands on IKEA's meatball recipe.

So Russia may or may not have a sub near Sweden. Atleast we know for sure America doesn't have any military personal stationed in other countries.

Honestly, the amount of dopey "But...but....America....derp de derp" comments here is disheartning-The USA has SFA to do with this topic-Russia is illegally going into Swedish territorial Waters and airspace(a few weeks back) and for what purpose? We are in a union with sweden and as they are being intimidated by bolshy bollix Putin and all people can come up with is "Well,America ....."

It's been done before, this is nothing new.
I suppose Ukraine has disappeared off the news headlines with Syria/Iraq and ebola and all that so a bit of anti Russia hate, paranoia and propaganda is in order to whip the masses into a frenzy like after MH17 (anyone remember that?)

Almost the same thing happened back in the 80's in Sweden. There's a really good episode of the Swedish detective series Wallander (The Troubled Man) that deals with it.

The russians are now saying it could be a dutch sub. The blame game starts again.

They were there for the wifi

Edit: On a more serious note, what exactly is Putin playing at quite deliberately antagonising western countries? Whats his end game here?

Remember a few months back when the Russians scared the $hite out of the British navy when they sailed their aircraft carrier group through the English Channel.:D

    Just probing & checking.

Finland has next to zero military capability so I suppose they are testing themselves against a more capable navy.

They checked on the Dutch a few weeks ago, but their navy couldn't respond, as they are working hard to dismantle their navy completely.

Last year they were testing the Brits, who took days to send one of their handfull of remaining ships to escort the Russian vessel away from Scotland

Its all just part of a probing exercise just to show how European nations are pathetically incapable of defending their own territory.

Looks like the Ruskies are at it again.

Depth charges away, this could be an embarrasment to Putin if russian subs are found to be in Swedish territorial waters.

Teams of people are searching the waters off Stockholm after reportedly intercepting messages from a Russian submarine.

The search in the Baltic Sea less than 30 miles from Stockholm began on Friday and reawakened memories of the final years of the Cold War when Sweden repeatedly hunted suspected Soviet submarines along its coast with depth charges.

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/europe/sweden/11172377/Swedish-navy-sends-200-people-to-hunt-for-foreign-underwater-activity.html

More vague bollocks to sway public opinion against Russia. Ukraine and MH17 have faded from memory and the West's lies about Putin have had no effect.
So Sweden has intercepted communications? Well, what were those communications and who was the "trustworthy" source?
Otherwise why is this crap even in the paper? What is the point of this story at all?
The article says absolutely nothing but it's enough to have people saying "Russia up to their old tricks again" ... whatever that's supposed to mean.

Ahh this old meme. You do realise the French have been about the most successful land military in European history? Within the language of the military much of it has French origins. Anyway, slightly off topic... :o:D

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

They may not have the largest warships in the world, but the Swedish navy certainly looks cool.

The Visby is the most fantastic looking naval vessel going.

Typical of these things though, they spent around €150m building the thing but decided against fully arming it to save a couple of million.

That said, the Swedish military is comparatively small. Why on earth Russia wants to harass a neutral country like this I dont know.

It may not be, I thought the sub was in trouble so it may have been looking for shallow water.

Apparently radio broadcasts were intercepted on a frequency reserved for emergencies to a place in Russia.

Not just any place in Russia, but I read somewhere the signal was traced to the headquarters of the soviet Baltic fleet.
