I'm looking to use some resin in my wood-turning but not sure which resin to buy...

I have been recommended these guys, but they have a long list of resins and I'm not sure which will work with turning...

Anyone done this before or have suggestions?

I use west systems http://www.westsystem.com/ss/ for my boatbuilding it can stand up to getting wet "I hope" and can be polished up so I'm sure it would be up for the job, to match the wood and use as a filler just use some fine sawdust off the wood I am using. Most of it comes with a slight amber tint but you can get a clear hardener "207" If you want I can give you a bit to try.

I've used Inlace (http://www.inlaceonline.com/) before but wasn't too keen on the effect, but then I'm not keen on those kinds of 'embellishments' in general to be honest.

That West System stuff looks like it does the trick... have found a few guys using it in the states. Where can I get my hands on some?

I get it from Marine parts direct in Swords http://www.goldenpages.ie/marine-parts-direct-swords/3/ their web site seems to be down at the moment so I can't post a link.

    I found them... http://marineparts.ie/?subcats=Y&status=A&pshort=Y&pfull=Y&pname=Y&pkeywords=Y&search_performed=Y&q=resin&dispatch=products.search

Cant find a 107 product... the resin would need to be clear alright (ironically so that I can tint it myself :) )

Actually something like this looks good: http://marineparts.ie/west-system-a-pack-1kg-slow.html
(Slow is important to allow the air bubbles to escape... I'm not sure HOW slow but I guess in a binary choice, Slow is better than Fast!)

It's 207 http://www.westsystem.com/ss/207-special-clear-hardener they may not have up for sale as it's a bit more expensive but they have ordered in for me. You could try the 205 or 206 as it only has a slight varnish effect.

The cure time for slow hardener is 10-15 hours it just gives your more time to do a large area in one go, I also find if you pass a heat gun or blow torch over the resin while it's still wet it helps pop any bubbles and when your mixing do it slowly so you don't create any :)

I was thinking of giving this a go at some stage. http://blog.shinium.eu/2014/08/resin-inlaid-wood.html

The best people seem to be this crowd, but there some reading to be done around the topic to find the right one for your needs.

Nah, I have a few things to do first (mostly work related!) and I'll be playing with my new toys that I bought at the seminar (a table saw and a band saw!).
Been doing a little segmented stuff but it would do your head in with the angles! :)

If you are only filling small cracks you could use shellac lacquer sticks. They melt in with a soldering iron and run nicely even into hairline cracks .I use them for small defects in Walnut etc ( almost always black ) The best source I found was www.leevalley.com but you can buy a box of Liberon sticks from the UK

The resins I'll source locally, the pigment I'll let you know when I'm ordering, probably soon!

That piece took me a while as I have never done ringed segments before and never used my band-saw in anger before either. I got the angles a bit screwed up (over sanding) and the circle came out wonky but I had left enough meat in it that I could just about get the right diameter circle out of it.

Gluing it was a total pain because of the angles, I couldn't get a decent amount of pressure on the sides of any two pieces that were to be joined and basically bungled my way through it with tape and a vice as best I could. Once I got two halves, I sanded the sides of them to get them to join perfectly (and get rid of my screwed up angles!) and put it in a circular strap "clamp"

After that, gripping it became a bit of an issue but I put the two pieces of blood-wood on the sides and drilled a BIG forstner bit through one side to be able to put it on my chuck. I over tightened the chuck at one point and snapped the wood and nearly cried but a quick bit of wood glue and a night in the clamp fixed it up.

Once I had it on the chuck, it was plain sailing. I cleaned up the inside to round and made a jam from waste wood and mounted it on that for finishing. I'm risking a CA glue finish on it which looks like its working out great. I'm a big fan of CA glue finish on small pieces but its awkward and nasty stuff to work with.

GLoNation glow pigment is on route, molds are ordered too... this is going to be messy silly fun :)

If you get the pumps with them it will make it very easy for mixing no measuring just a pump of each also if you are mixing a large amount in a cup pour it into something like a paint tray or foil tray as it's less likely to heat up and set when it's spread out compared to it sitting in a cup.
Good luck I look forward to see what it turns out like.

This is cool. How goes the resin

  • Business & Finance Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 32,387 Mod ✭✭✭✭DeVore

    Did you do that?

The resin... is problematic but going ok.

The problem is international terrorism. I kid you not lol....

It transpires that there is some pretty nasty stuff in the hardeners and they are banned from certain countries because they can (Somehow) be rendered into explosives of some kind. Consequently its hard to ship them around the world and as it happens, Europe has a problem with West Systems 207 hardener. I'll post the quote from West Systems:
Yes a 1cm cube of WEST SYSTEM 105 resin with 207 Special Coating Hardener will be yellowish but transparent.

Your initial enquiry went through the America website to Gougeon Brothers Inc. Gougeon Brothers developed and now produce a WEST SYSTEM 207 Special Clear Hardener but we are unable to produce this in the UK for the European markets due to restrictions under the REACH regulations and its toxicity under European classification. We produce WEST SYSTEM 207 Special Coating hardener which offers exceptional clarity of wood grain etc. In order to maintain this clarity there is an amount of UV inhibitor within the hardener that does create a yellow tint to the cured system.

So there you go, European 207 Hardener is not the same as the American 207 Hardener and I'm 60 Euros the poorer for it! Plus that UV inhibitor is a Bad Things for the glow in the dark pigment, which works on UV waves.

Not to be deterred I have discovered Gedeo (sometime Pebeo) Crystal Resin which is water clear and slightly cheaper than West Systems too. It takes a little longer to set (at least 24 hours) but it does what it says on the tin so far. I haven't cast up much as I'm smothered with a cold but what I had done seems to be good!

Will let you all see my creations when they are done :):)

I wonder what medium he used to suspend the pigment?
