Hope it's better than Dungannon last week, 48 bulls entered and only two sold.

thanks Patsy I thought linear scoring but lot 90 had me confused as looking at that lot I thought that it had been linear scored. Must be that linear not included in its star rating.

Ya, I was there. Didn't buy though. 73 animals on catalogue not included in sale for starters. A good few went through unsold.
Stars and easy calving were selling good. Some good prices for a few lots. Better than I expected, to be honest, given the way the cattle trade is at the moment. Lads seemed to be buying for the BDGP scheme.
A few bulls went to Spain. Can't beat the free market.

You'd wonder about the animals that didnt go into the ring. Is it worth selling an animal on farm for a price rather than dolling it up for the day and hopefully have a bidding war going on? One in the hand is worth 2 in the bush I guess....Given what I saw on Twitter, a lot of animals were sold in the 3K-6K range

Half thinking of going. Just looking at the catalogue there. Would be more interested in a cheap heifer.

Will there be any cheap cows in Ennis tomorrow?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,127 ✭✭✭✭patsy_mccabe

I dunno. Haven't seen the catalogue even. Might be worth a look though.
He bred the bull PYR in the old days. If anyone remembers him.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,316 ✭✭✭tanko

Don't remember that bull. The Donedeal pics aren't great but the cattle look good, not the best time to be selling up tho.

I had planned to go but a certain heifer calving put an end to that. What were prices like?

Ineresting thing about her. Only one star for dolility but she scored 7/10 when she was scored herself. Is she quiet? You can PM me the price.

not a bother on her, wouldn't have touched her if she was flighty.Had a nice 4* heifer calf with her by Queenshead Althea an back in calf to Wilodge Cerberus

Good man Pasty, fella I bought the bull off earlier in the year had a loosebeare fantastic calf that he had high hopes for aswell. Got me wondering watching the videos on Facebook there and a lot of bulls selling for 10k plus why we don't see more bulls here making it. The average sale price at their premier sale in Carlisle seems to be a lot higher than here.

LOOSEBEARE FANTASTIC is in the bottom 1% for milk. Something to be wary off. Calving at over 7% too. Herds are larger over in the UK so that helps lift prices for the very top bulls.

I'd have no idea of the value of limousines when i wouldn't be buying one for myself and I never will be for the dairy cows.
So I'm clueless on the thing.

Anything over 2k would be a dear bull for me.

Fine looking bull, best of luck with him.
Would you usually pay that much for a bull? Was he your first choice?

Thanks for that Tanko. Needing a good stock bull, wouldn't usually pay as much as that, but always prepared to go that wee bit extra for something we like. Was the only bull that we were interested in.

Long gestation and harder calving (than dairy) rules it out for me though.

Been down that road before and want to keep the calving as compact as I can.
Be ok if calving all year round.

Calving jack hasn't been used in the last few years and want to keep it that way.

Hope he’s lucky for ya, is it straightforward to get him home or is there extra testing needed as a breeding animal?

I was there for a look. Saw that bull. Thought he was the best of the lot. Savage muscle hanging of the end of him. Lodge Hamlet seemed to be breeding well from the bulls I saw there by him.
Place was packed but there seemed to be more bulls than bidders there. A lot of good bulls went through unsold. Didnt notice many overseas buyers there. Heifers were poor too. A lot with only one star for milk.

Cheers, I’m Meeting Andy Ewing in about an hours time. He’s taking bulls to Scotland and gets on the ferry at Larne. I’m only 8 miles from the ferry so always easy to get cattle either up from the south or over from Stirling or Carlisle. He’s export tested so no further quarantine period needed

Thanks Patsy, a lot of bulls not presented and plenty not sold. Was disappointed with the heifers. An awful lot of Ampertine breeding evident in both the heifers and bulls shown.

I think one of them sales had around 90 heifers all going back to 5 bulls a few years ago.

A lad i know bought a bull similiar to your lad for replacement heifers. First calves from him this autumn and only 2 heifes out of eight and they are both very muscly so unsuitable for breeding

Best of luck with him. What kind of a feeding regime would you plan for him now to bring him back down to normal feed levels?

He'll be on about 10kg split two times a day of a blend that the other bulls here get, with rumen conditioner, plus silage and gradually come down to about 7kg. He's still got a bit of growing to do, so whilst he's never likely to be a big bull, the thinking is that he'll bring a bit of style as he's a very clean calf. He's going to get it easy for a few months as he'll not be needed until the Spring.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,127 ✭✭✭✭patsy_mccabe

Trust me, the pic doesn't do him justice. He look a lot better in real life. Put up a video of him when you get him home.

Has anyone used the Castleview Gazzelle? if so what do you think of him. He is an Ampertain Commander son with Ronick Hawk as the MGS.

I be hopeful of a good heifer calf.

I had a couple of calves out of ZAG (Castleview Gazelle) - one male and one female.
I sold both. My intention was to keep the female for breeding but because she was so muscular, I was afraid if I kept her I would have serious calving difficulty. The mother was one quarter BB .
