After looking at him for the last 50 minutes or so, it's clear that he's really suffering now. The pain must be excruciating.

He is dying out there. Epic effort

It's annoying me that the screen says AVE instead of AVG for average speed

1.589km over Dowsetts record, just just short of a mile. Some going.

Who can beat it? Cancellara, Martin?

A bit short of what he wanted. Will he do it again?

I don't think Spartacus could do it. Tony Martin maybe.

Dunno, I just think he's not as good as a TT-er as he used to be. Don't get me wrong, I like Cancellara and I would really like him to give it a bash, but I don't think he'd be able to beat Wiggin's record.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,484 ✭✭✭manafana

    right my say on matters:

pressure affected record he had a 55km + in him easily, main sources who know stuff saying so, also noticed he didn't hold line too wheel not sure if this was just something cause by going at 54k + or something pressure causes or makes bends easier.

Its breakable now its not a 55km +. Maybe Dumoulin might try he certainly has power for it we all know Martin could if he wanted but he seems uninterested German market isn't that keen really right now, Cancellara seems to fear its too much work and his tt skills have dwindled from his high standards of the past.

Thomas is one man who could do it in future if he wants ticks all the boxes for it.

So with Pat McQuaid sharing a few jokes with Johan Bruyneel (despite his 10 year ban from all UCI sporting involvement.....) in the VIP area of the inner part of the track this evening , and Wiggins then stating that "even the great Lance Armstrong ". . never tried for the hour record, has the sport been advanced, or kicked in the nuts again, tonight?

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,243 ✭✭✭Goose81

As a very casual fan of cycling can someone explain why wiggins only won one Tour de France and didn't seem too competitive much after ? Was it a particularly weak year or was he too old for more or another reason?

Seriously? Saw none of it myself but regarding Armstrong was Wiggins speaking with thinly veiled sarcasm? As for McQuaid & Bruyneel in the VIP area which you'd imagine Wiggins & his team would have some fair degree of control of - imagine the nature of the remarks had this been the welcomed audience for an Astana rider going for the record.

I wasn't watching at the time but it probably was a pretty weak year & over a not particularly mountainous course. Also the strongest rider other than or maybe including Wiggins was Froome who was not allowed ride for himself but actually in aid of Wiggins. Wiggins won loads though that year so obviously was flying. The next year was much more mountainous & Sky decided Froome was to be their Tour de France leader whilst Wiggins would go for the Giro d'Italia. He flopped badly there though, got injured, & that was his last ride in a 3 week Grand Tour. Many would argue, like Sean Kelly recently, that it was something of a lack of character for Wiggins not to have the desire of a real champion to have made bigger subsequent efforts to win so big again, perhaps like Mark Cavendish in buying out his contract to go elsewhere. In past times getting into one's 30s meant much more in terms of the end of one's competitive days than it necessarily does now.

the way i like to look at it is that he has only one TdF win more than i do.

Wiggins like or hate him has also brought cycling into mainstream in the uk which has opened up doors for many other riders. He has always been a track man on the road, he did not enjoy the life of a tour winner so went back to what he truely enjoys.

Wiggins is a track cyclist at heart, he never seemed truly motivated when he switched to the road. There were probably a few reasons he only won one tour. Firstly team Sky arrived on the scene with deep pockets and we're determined to give the U.K it's first Yellow jersey winner. Secondly the route in 2012 suited Wiggins down to the ground, not many mountains and long time trials, he would have designed the course himself.
He went onto to win gold in the Olympic Time trial and after that his motivation seemed to go. Poor performances partly due to injury and the emergence of Chris Froome saw him drop in importance in team Sky. A few decent placings in Paris roubaix and he now moves onto new team ventures.

Really surprised, given his extensive track experience how far he strayed from the black line. Definitely lost distance there.

    Dowsett looked a lot tidier.

Great effort though, he's a machine.

I suspect the Armstrong comment was a case of Wiggins use of sarcasm. This doesn't look so great.....

That's David Miller photo-bombing in the background, btw

    Damn right haha.

Nah I just meant he hasn't really competed before or after for the top spot. I know he didn't specialise in that discipline but he seemed to turn up and win and then disappear.

Also a lot of what you posted looking at it the top riders wouldn't even enter, different disciplines or not even the road races.

There doesn't seem to be much competition in track cycling whatsoever. Road racers don't touch it and it's only specialised by a handful of countries .

Using the same source of analysis for other hour attempts

Shows remarkable consistency with a drop off at the end which is in marked contrast to Dowsetts effort

    And previous efforts for comparison

He has also provided data regarding the atmospheric conditions and the potential impact on the distance covered

They don't ride the Dauphine or Paris Nice??

They are 2 different disciplines and the training for each is quite different. Wiggins gained 10kg to return to the track. Some of the 6 days riders compete on the road too - Iljo Keisse does well at both, but the UCI track events are more specialised these days.
The removal of IP, points race and madison from the Olympic program has made track less appealing to road riders.

Just because a track rider doesn't compete at pro tour level on the road doesn't mean there's no competition in the races. Most of the British riders competing on the road these days came from the track program and are former World champions.
