At this stage, the winner shouldn't merely be the best on the day. Last year, prodigy Adam Handling had a bad final. The judges had clearly been waiting to crown him, but now couldn't with integrity. And yet, part of you still thought he deserved to win; otherwise, what’s the point of the previous six weeks of the show?

Same as any knock-out competition. You have to be on form to get to the final - and then you have to perform at the end. It's about peaking at the right time.

Example the other way - France/All Blacks in the last rugby world cup - NZ the better side the whole way through, France flattered to get there - but deserved to win the final - and didn't. Did we think "Oh, NZ were the better team all the way through"? Hell no. It felt a bit cheap to me (doubtless not for NZ folks though of course ).

If you can't deliver the best performance in the final, then you don't deserve the title.
