there is roughly 20 of those towns live now. In some of the towns people have reported that it is often just a few housing estates or a few roads that's live so they are not rolling out to the whole town in each case. There is no rush to roll out FTTH to towns anyway as most people are well served by Virgin Media or FTTC. I would imagine uptake of FTTH would be very low in urban areas.

Bray is a very large town so I would imagine only a portion of it has gone live.

Unlike the FTTH rural rollout, there is no map to show what parts of towns has gone live or where the fiber is.

OpenEir are meant to be working on a new FTTH map, hopefully it will show both the rural routes and the town routes under live, in progress and planned.

Yeah, and some people aren't keen on the service dropping as low as our (family) ADSL2+ connection if not lower sometimes. :D

you live in Greystones town? Plenty of FTTC cabinets there and FTTH was rolled out to 1840 premises there. I think virgin media are there as well.

Roscommon is the next town to go live on 2nd January 2017.

On my exchange says 3200 is efibre and 400 FTTH (all cabinets live since 2 years) How to figure out which are those and when is plan for the rest to be done??

They did roughly 10% of Ennis and left it at that. Number hasn't changed in months. Seems to be a very strange roll-out, low hanging fruit perhaps. I don't think Eir have any intention of doing anymore beyond the 'easy' estates so don't hold your breath.

Unlike the rural FTTH lines, Eir never gave numbers of premises to be completed for any of the towns listed in the 66 towns plan. The open eir fiber rollout map only shows the rural FTTH routes and location of cabinets but not the urban FTTH, where it is or how much more there is to do. From what I've read over past year, the rollouts in the towns are limited to a few estates in each town, rather than a full scale rollout.

Thanks for answers. Where is the rural FTTH rollout map?and official 66 town list? cos Im on between :)
I don't hold my breath as I have filling that eircom only change name.I was off topic for 2 years.

Thank you Gonzo Im not on the 66 list those 400 of 1gb makes me wonder which ones they are. where I live is little over 3000 houses connected to fttc. I know that map I was on it every day 2 years ago. Unfortunately it shows all fibre (fttc) does not specify ftth.
I presume there is nothing more info from eir.
Thank you for a quick update.
Waiting for Siro second rollout 2020 now :)

thats just the cable. they need to blow the fibre down it later.

    Ennis

blow the fibre down ? how does that work ? well, anyway, got to be a good sign right? why else would they dig up the grass and block the road off ?!

looks like they laid the orange cable to the bottom of a pole across the road from my house, now they are packing up and going...

Thats Siro I would say, they've been steadily working their way out from the substation on the Tulla road.

Can you PM me what road / estate you are in?

It's hardly Siro because they're putting down the same orange cable (rolls the size of back tyres on a tractor) across half of North Wexford where I live, just not past my house

Its a duct, not a cable, but yes, this is what they're doing.

Its the "hardest" bit of the process. Next they just attach a machine to the end and blow the fibres into it and it appears at the far end.

cool. can't wait to see how this progresses.

If KN are doing the rollout for Siro then I'd say this is Siro - the pole that they taped the orange cable to is an ESB pole... (I'll post a photo later)

does anyone have a siro connection? how does it compare with the eir(com) version?

  • Registered Users Posts: 478 ✭✭sibergoth

I can't actually find any useful info on the Siro page.. just a load of marketing ****e. anyone know how much it costs ?

  • Registered Users Posts: 478 ✭✭sibergoth

sorry - its sold via Vodafone - 1000Mbps = €90 for just internet

bit pricey. I thought the eir(com) version was 60-70 a month..

depends on who will supply Siro in your area, most likely Vodafone.

Digiweb also resell Siro in some areas

Eir charge 75 for standalone 1000 but their upload is slightly less at 100

  • Registered Users Posts: 478 ✭✭sibergoth

    What's the upload on Siro?

Here's the end of the cable they laid. Taped to an esb pole opposite the house.

    Wow.

This is why its taken so long and why we have terrible MNOs, people only want the cheapest package :pac:

  • Registered Users Posts: 478 ✭✭sibergoth

my comment on price is in comparison to the eir offering - 75 as oppose to 90...

Looking at the offering - 1000Mbps unlimited access, obviously that isn't pricey - a few years ago 100Mbps would have cost business a fortune.

I'm happy to pay 90 quid a month for the Gigabit. I'm a techy and I work from home and everything I do is online... especially if the upload is even better as that will be a big benefit to me.

I came to Ennis from a rural village in Clare that had absolutely terrible internet... I paid well over 90 a month for years for various different services (broadband, 3G, 4G, whatever i could get all at once)... and still had a terrible speed...

Getting 1000Mbps will be a total world of difference...

Again, my earlier comment is merely regarding the difference in price between the offerings...

I do agree however that the populous at mass 'won't notice any difference' and only want the cheapest deal...

Both eir and Vodafone have a 1TB download allowance on jiggabits.

The cheapest jiggabit that I can find on eirs website is "Extreme broadband, Unlimited Mobile & UK calls" for 90/month.

Almost. It's a duct; microducts can go in it. A microduct (at least the ones I'm familiar with) has about a 10mm inside diameter, and 14mm outside.

in yer experience how long does it take from having the fibre lines installed outside your home to actually getting eir ftth enabled? i talked to the tech guys that where installing the cables and they said feb march next year but im not getting excited

Has been asked a thousand times. The jobs are done by independent teams and aren't related. Trying to predict it is pointless.

some places get cabled for FTTH up to 5 or 6 weeks before other routes in the exchange so it really is very difficult to pin point how soon afterwards an area goes live but for most places it's usually between 4 to 8 weeks depending on how soon the road is being wired in relation to the overall exchange rollout.

What worries me is that we didn't get Eir FTTH in my estate, presumably due to old lack of ducting.

For Siro, we have no ESB poles as power cables come in underground, I'm hoping it's not the same excuse :(

you have to have a duct to your hosue as thats what your esb comes in on.

House was built in 1982, I'd not put money on anything having been done the way you'd expect!

The telephone cable comes in via a big semi-circle in hydrodare pipe I found when I was getting a wall built :) Very nearly went through it as I had no reason to suspect it would be there.

From the ESB substation out by the Tulla Road M18 exit back in towards town. They've been steadily moving back along the Tulla road through Roslevan etc.
