1,000 megabits broadband on its way. Looks like Kilkenny will be one of a few towns getting it first. Not sure how quick it will be rolled out but looks like we will have it VERY soon. Within the next 6 months :)

That's genuinely good news, for punters but also, hopefully encouraging for business, meanwhile us in the rest of the county:

    Source??

And like everything, within 6 months, usually means 3 years if ever!

    EDIT:
    Found source http://businessetc.thejournal.ie/super-fast-broadband-ireland-1749446-Oct2014/

I think it's great to be getting faster speeds, but I think it's really crap that people outside of the city have to live with
speeds of 2MB - 3MB speeds if they can even get broadband. I have 50MB down and it's great but I think they should improve the
rural areas before increasing someone like me to speeds of 1,000 MB

I think that to attract foreign business they need to work on the major towns first. Unfortunately not a big enough return to invest in rural areas. It is a private company trying to make money. It must be extremely frustrating to live in one of these areas who barely have broadband at all.

Is this Eircoms response to ESB/Vodafones FTTH?

'tis a bit of a joke really, with the exchange in Phil Hogan's own parish (Oldtown, Tullaroan)not even enabled for broadband and Eircom say there are no plans to enable it. Even a good portion of that parish and Kilmanagh were not covered by the now ended NBS. The reason I mention Hogan is because he announced this originally a few months back. This "mobile broadband" lark is pure nonsense.

Eircom isn't the only company that can provide broadband, don't forget. And also don't forget that they're not a semi-state any more, they're a private company. So there's no reason it should be them rather than any other private company who provides broadband.

Mobile broadband via the 3G mobile phone network is not fit for purpose; the best way to get broadband if you don't have access to fibre and likely won't for the foreseeable (i.e. live outside a town), is to use one of the various wireless providers.

They generally do a good job, and are mostly smaller local-based companies, who we should support.
