    Hi there,

Been racking my brains and torturing Google on this one, but need some help.

I'm trying to remember the name of a book/series. I'm going to just throw out as much as I can remember. It's not 'The Passage' or Brett's 'Demon Cycle' I'm thinking of.

Post-apocalyptic Earth, humans living in walled communities. Bad guys are vampire-like mutants that attempt to scale the walls periodically and must be defended against. Bow and arrow tech. Description reminded me of the infected in the film 'I am Legend'.

They sleep in the day in any shade; under overpasses etc, and in groups. Need to be careful not to wake them even in daylight.

Protagonist is a young adult/teenage girl; maybe an orphan. Hunts with a bow. Sometimes illicitly manages to snag a hare, which has some sort of nostalgic resonance.

There's a school or hospital that figures in the community.

The location sort of reminds me of California/Nevada. Las Vegas might be mentioned. Guns/cars are available for salvage.

At some point, questing protagonists take refuge in a hotel/casino, on the upper floors, while mutants swarm below.

Don't know if my memories are from one or several books. I read it around 2006-2007. My memory is that the author might be a woman, but I'm not 100% on that.

    Any ideas gratefully appreciated!

I don't think it is, but somewhat similar in description to Vampire Earth by Knight.

There's hundreds of them! And there was me thinking that Google would easily throw up the particular post-apocalyptic vampire survival quest story I was looking for...

You know you've just named the top three themes for the last decade or so (Vampire, post apocalyptic and survival quest) for teenage novels, right? :P

If that isn't "The Passage", then somebody ripped somebody off!

Lot of online talk about how The Passage is very similar to Stephen King's The Stand.

The Passage only came out in 2010; I read the other one a couple of years before that.

EDIT: You know what? I think it is The Passage I'm thinking of. I've been conflating a couple of plotlines in my head, it would appear...
