Potential virus?

    Long story short, I had saved a .doc file to my external hard drive a few weeks ago, went to open it today & it wouldn't open. It said unreadable file/corrupted file. Put external into another laptop to see if it would open, it wasn't there so the file has disappeared now from my external.

    I went to do a file back up and chose the external and it said that location could be corrupted.

    Soooo

    I'm trying to 'scan for errors' by rightclicking on the external, but it only gets so far and has been stuck on 1098 files for the last 5-10 minutes.

    Any advice?
