Well, here goes my attempt at a training log!

Firstly, a little bit about myself: I'm 38, I'm overweight. Honestly, I am! I’m not a skinny girl bemoaning a few added pounds here and there; I really am a fat girl! Also, when I say 'fat' it's not a put-down, it's just a description! I live in Dublin, work full time and have a cat who I love very much. When I'm not running or working, I love to read and usually have 4 or 5 books on the go. I am also never without music and my earphones.

I started running in July of 2013, and since then I've gone from being barely able to run 100m, to running 5km three times a week. I've run in 7 races so far with two more planned for 2014.

I am very active on twitter (same user name if you want to find and follow me) and also have a website (again, same name). You can see those contact details in my boards profile too.

I have two goals at the moment (as of 1st November 2014):
    • I want to run a sub-40 5k (my current time is 40-44mins).
    • I ran/walked the Flora Women's Mini-Marathon this year, and for next year my goal is to run the 10k non-stop.

I'm starting this training log both as a way to remind myself of where I've been and focus on where I'm going with my running goals, and also maybe to help motivate and inspire others who might have a similar story to mine.

I'll be updating this first post as I achieve my goals and make new ones!

A word on my eating habits: I cook for myself and avoid processed foods. I eat bread rarely. I cook with lentils, chickpeas and rice more often than pasta. I eat 5 small meals a day. I don't use sugar and only the occasional sprinkle of salt. I only drink water (up to 3L a day), and have two cups of decaf coffee every weekday but do have milk with breakfast. I gave up chocolate about 2 and a half years ago. I don't eat crisps, cakes or cookies. I also don't drink carbonated drinks. I am working on getting my carb:protein ratio balanced, which is a struggle because I do love carbs! I do treat myself occasionally but in moderation. I drink alcohol rarely. Anyway, so that's an overview of where my food habits are!

(Also, "Breathe, breathe, believe" is my favourite running mantra from a favourite song of mine; in case you are wondering about my thread title!)

This was a brilliant week for my running! Was very inspired by the Dublin Marathon, I PB'd a 5 mile and also ran my first ever negative spilt.

    Monday 27th October
Today was the Dublin Marathon, and I ended up walking over 10km as I cheered at various spots around the city. With the walking and standing I was on my feet for over 7 hours, but it was worth it as the buzz from the race was amazing! It's always such a inspiration to cheer at the marathon!
    Distance: 10.1km
    Time: 2.30.00

    Tuesday 28th October
I wasn't planning to run this morning, after the day of walking and standing previously. But I was in such a good mood and woke up early anyway, I thought what the hey!
    Distance: 5.02km
    Time: 44.25

    Thursday 30th October
Another early morning run, nothing special to report. A little slower than usual though.
    Distance: 5.33km
    Time: 46.43

    Saturday 1st November
Long run today, planned for 8km. Up early to fuel and hydrate, out the door early. Ended up PB'ing my 5 mile time by 3.06 minutes, and ran my first ever negative split.
    Distance: 8.03km
    Time: 1:08:06

Also, did a one hour workout, doing pilates and light weight lifting focusing on my arms and back.

Sundays are rest days so that's me for the week!

Thank you! Feels pretty awesome to say I've been a runner for over a year so yeah, I'm definitely going to keep at it!:D

This was a kind of up and down week for me but in the end all is well and I feel good!

    Monday 3rd November
After a fantastic rest day on Sunday I was ready to start the week with another early morning run! Felt myself lagging a bit and noticed my hamstring feeling a bit strained so, it was a bit of a struggle!
    Distance: 5.08km
    Time: 44.20

    Wednesday 5th November
Nothing special about today, although I went for a shorter run as I felt I was overdoing it a bit lately. I’ve been foam rolling and stretching though.
    Distance: 3.11km
    Time: 27:42

    Friday 7th November
Back to 5km today which felt really good. I also went for a 4k walk afterwards! (long story!). Hamstrings seem fine, thankfully!
    Distance: 5.12km + 3.97km (walk)
    Time: 43:08 + 42.50

    Saturday 8th November
35 minute spinning session + 20 minutes abs workout.
    Distance: 18.4km (spinning)
    Time: 35:56

Next week: I will be preparing for a 5k race :D

I read the report on your running blog from today. Big big congratulations. That's great improvement to see within a year. Imagine what time you'll be running this time next year!!!

This week was one of the highlight weeks of my year! This week I was preparing for a 5k race on Saturday. It was a race which was significant for me, as I was going to try and run my goal time of under 40 minutes, something I had never achieved before. I am delighted to say that I did it! For more on that you can check out my website (link to same in my profile page) if you want.

    Monday 10th November
A planned 5k for me today, last one before my race on Saturday. I felt good, strong and energetic but I still ran it fairly slowly.
    Distance: 5.10km
    Time: 44.50

    Wednesday 12th November
Last run before Saturday's race. A slow and easy 3k.
    Distance: 3.37km
    Time: 28:45

    Thursday 13th November
One hour workout, weights (upper body/arms) and core work. No spinning as I wanted to save the legs for Saturday.

    Saturday 15th November
A very busy day in terms of activity! The highlight was the race, and running it in my target time. I then walked home from the race and also had a one hour workout with my trainer (45 minutes weights/core + spinning).
    Distance: 5km + 5km (walk) + 6k (spinning)
    Time: 38.29 (PB!) + 50 mins (approx) + 10mins

Now that I hit one of my goals (see my introduction), my next goal is to run 10k without stopping or walking. I'm feeling really confident, and strong and determined so I know I can do it! I'm going to take all the advice I've been given on running a faster pace (different thread) and apply that to my weekly runs. I'm looking forward to pushing my limits and seeing just what I'm capable of! Thank you, everyone, for your support and encouragement thus far!

Keep going as you are and progressing the time on your feet and adding a bit of intensity gradually and you'll be running sub 30 no bother.
Well done again and have a great week of training next week.

I've been running just over 5k on a pretty consistent basis lately, so this week I wanted to try upping that to 6k. I ended up missing the mark completely, but all in all I'm happy with my results as I ran a negative split on a 6.5k.

    Monday 17th November
Today was a recovery run so I kept it short and slow. I also had a one hour workout with my trainer, doing weights and pilates.
    Distance: 3.15km
    Time: 26:49

    Wednesday 19th November
Today I wanted to try for 6km. I thought I knew my usual route well enough to hit my target, so I was very surprised and disappointed that I hadn’t. I was also a lot slower than usual but that wasn’t on purpose. I guess I was still in recovery mode!
    Distance: 5.48km
    Time: 47:43

    Friday 21st November
Trying for 6km again, I accidentally ran further! I also ran faster, and ended up with a negative split! All this on about an hours sleep as I’d had insomnia the night before!
    Distance: 6.48km
    Time: 54:53

    Saturday 15th November
A lot of walking around today as I was quite busy, but I don’t count that towards my training log. I did have a one hour workout with my trainer, doing 45 minutes weights and pilates and 10 minutes spinning.
    Distance: 6k (spinning)
    Time: 10:06 (spinning)

I know that you're not supposed to increase your distance by more than 10% each month, (or so says the general rule?) so for the coming week I'm going to adjust my route so I'm running at 6k twice a week (Monday's being the shorter run). The last thing I want to do is overdo it!

Here's some info on the 10% rule, its per week though, you're heading the right direction so keep it up.

Brilliant! Thanks! I got conflicting info when I googled so went on the side of caution. 10% per week it is then!

I'm feeling really strong and capable lately with my running, and this week was a really good one. I covered 21k in 4 days of running, I'm getting stronger at lifting weights and feeling much more confident about the goals I want to achieve.

    Monday 24th November
Monday’s are my short/slow runs because I also have a one hour workout with my trainer the same day. Today, both run and workout went well.
    Distance: 3.08km
    Time: 26:44

    Tuesday 25th November
Tuesdays will be a longer run, 6k for now…simply because I can! I still need to nail down a route that is closer to 6k and not going too much over.
    Distance: 6.20km
    Time: 52:45

    Thursday 27th November
During the week I decided to try for an 8k run on Saturday, so today instead of the planned 6k I went 4.
    Distance: 4.05km
    Time: 34:45

    Saturday 15th November
I got a bit of a lie in today but still went in the morning for my run. I learned alot from today's run, including a few things I won't do again in a hurry! But very happy with my result, even if I did have to stop a few times mid-run. In addition to my run I did a one-hour workout with my trainer, concentrating on weights.
    Distance: 8.02k
    Time: 1:07:46

For next week I'm planning pretty much the same schedule, except that my long run on Saturday will be a 5k race! I might turn Tuesday's 6k into a 4k though. :D

Still feeling queasy but hopefully it will settle down soon!

    Well done today.
I did that race as my first race a couple of years ago also in 39xx mins. By the following March I had it down just below 30 mins.
I look forward to seeing you do similar:)
MSB 5k on Patrick's weekend is a great race so maybe one to aim for?
    Well done again.

Really wasn't feeling the best this week so not as active as usual. With a 5k race on Saturday I think it helped that I was more rested anyway.

    Monday 1st December
No running this morning but I did a one hour workout with my trainer, lots of weights and some time on the treadmill and bike.

    Tuesday 2nd December
4k run this morning, bit slower than usual but understandable given how low I’ve been feeling.
    Distance: 4.05km
    Time: 35:17

    Saturday 6th December
Ran a 5k race today but did it for the fun of running and wasn’t worried about my time or getting a PB. Afterwards I went for a one hour workout with my trainer, doing a lot of abs/core work and some time on the spinning bike.
    Distance: 5k + 8.5 (spinning)
    Time: 39:42 + 15:0 (spinning)

I have to say I’m feeling better for the restful week and ready to tackle the coming week of running. I have no intentions of letting my running slide over the holidays!

Race report for my Jingle Bells 5k with photos is up on my blog but here's the text if you'd rather read it here:

Laughing all the way: Donore Harriers Jingle Bells 5k (Race report)

The Donore Harriers Jingle Bells 5k was my last race of the year so I decided to forget about trying for a PB and not worry about my time; I just wanted to relax and enjoy the race. It worked! I really enjoyed this race with its festive atmosphere, beautiful scenery and easy route.

I had a few experiences along the way that reminded me how much I love running and how much fun it truly is. Not just for me apparently, but for others too.

I ended up getting to the race an hour early, which normally is how I like it but today I hadn't wanted to be that early! Oh well, I just walked around the park a little bit and ended up having a chat with a marshall who was there while her kids were racing.

I had the fabulous experience of seeing the park's herd of deer; every time I go to a race in the park I hope to see them, and today I did!

I also ended up chatting to couple who were waiting around the start line. They were from Canada and have recently moved to Dublin for study. Shortly before the start time I spotted various people in very festive costumes so I went around to take some photos and get some tweeting done. It was a great way to pass the time until the gun went off.

Starting out I kept to a slower pace to let the crowds go ahead of me. The sound of jingle bells was enough to keep me going and there was a definite holiday feeling in the air! (Speaking of the air, the day was cold but dry with a bit of wind but nothing unbearable. I have really lucked out with good weather for my racing this winter! Long may it continue!).

Because I was running this race for fun I paid more attention to my surroundings and the people around me. I noticed quite a lot of kids running and felt really inspired by them all. Two in particular I want to mention because their efforts really touched me and spurred me on during the race.

Firstly, just after the 2km mark, I noticed a kid running with his mom and I'm no great judge of age but I think he was maybe 6 years old? And he was just running along, wearing a Christmas jumper and santa hat. As I came up to pass them I told him he was awesome and asked for a high five for good luck. His mom said he hadn't stopped running since the start of the race. That was cool. Really, really cool. Meeting them left a smile on my face as I continued on with the run.

The other young runner who really inspired me was a girl, not sure of her age but in her teens, who was run/walking with her coach. I noticed them pass me once, and when they stared to walk I passed them. This continued throughout the race; they would pass me, I would pass them. I soon began to realize that we were using each other as motivation to keep going, which actually made me really happy! At around 4k they took off and I wasn't able to catch them again but I managed to find them afterwards and give the girl a 'well done'. It turns out they were part of a youth group who were taking up running. How awesome is that?!

It was really brilliant to see so many young runners on that course. It absolutely inspires me!

The race itself was very well organized and well marshalled, I was glad for the bottle of water afterwards and the banana. The younger runners got medals but for the rest of us we got these bright and cheery mugs. A nice little keepsake from a very enjoyable race!

Oh, I finished in 39:42 but who's keeping track, right? ;)

I've been debating with myself whether I should keep trying to run 4 days a week or stick to 3 days a week. I have to be honest with myself and remind myself I'm not a lithe, fast, fit runner like most people. As healthy as I am, I'm still carrying all this weight around, and maybe I should run within my current limitations, while always focusing on making sure those limitations change. It bears thinking about. I'm happy with my week though, I got some good distances in and two really good workouts with my trainer.

    Monday 8th December
Managed my usual short run this morning but was still feeling tired, I was surprised I ran slightly faster than usual. Maybe I just wanted to get it over with?! Also had a one hour workout with my trainer, with some fast 2 minute jogs on the treadmill in between weight circuits.
    Distance: 3.74km
    Time: 32.13

    Wednesday 10th December
My tracker app didn't register this run, but I know my route and so it was well over 5k, I just don't have the exact distance or time so this is approximate.
    Distance: 5.?km
    Time: 42?

    Saturday 8th December
Went for a long run this morning, although it was a very slow and careful run due to frosty footpaths. I ran into the Phoenix Park and then it was easier because I could run on the grass. Still, it was a lot slower than my usual time but better safe than sorry! Also had a one hour workout with my trainer, doing a lot of weight lifting with the arms.
    Distance: 8.1k
    Time: 1:10:05

For the coming week I'm going to take each day as it comes and see how I feel. The last thing I want to do is overdo it, and I have to remember that I am not in the same league as most of the runners I know here and on twitter. There are runners I know who think a 26 minute 5k is a terrible time and there I am celebrating a sub-40 5k. Which of course is a great achievement for someone like me, and of course I am not comparing myself to others. Which is why, I shouldn't try to train like them too, right? But while I'm not in the same league as these runners, of course, I have high hopes that one day, I WILL be! :D

For that particular person it might be a terrible time. It's all relative. That person might be running a lot longer than you. They might be doing a lot more training each week. They might not be carrying any extra weight and might be fit from other sports.
Also, some of us also just progress at a slower rate than others for whatever reason.
You just keep on doing what you're doing with the training and the diet and ramp up the time on your feet carefully and gradually and you'll be just as good as you can be.... for you!

+1 I also see that you are starting to do shorter distances at a quicker pace and longer distances at a conservative pace = recipe for success. Successful running (again relative) is all about throwing a number of ingredients in the right quantity (for you) into a bag and shaking them all around. It also involves a work/life balance and only you can work that one out ;) Three days one week, four days another...whatever works for you and keeps you happy.

I'd say if you felt like it you could easily add in a 4th day. If you did 20min at a slower pace (30 - 60 sec / mile slower) it would be a good start. If you do that for a few weeks then you would get used to 4days and you could then increase the pace slightly and the length of time you were out for :)

Thanks for the ideas and encouragement! I think I've been trying to train like I was a fitter, faster runner but have felt like it was too much, felt tired and run down. I know it was partly due to my iron deficiency but also came to realise I'm trying to do too much.

I am going to keep it to 3 times a week for a bit, and then like you guys suggest, try to ease into a 4 run per week training plan on a more gradual basis.

I do feel relieved that running 3 times a week is still effective, I think I've been feeling that that wouldn't be good enough (even with my workouts twice a week!). But I have to realize that for me, it IS good enough!

If you're starting to not enjoy it then it's definitely time to step back. You HAVE to enjoy it or it just won't work long-term and you won't stick to it.
Good luck with sorting the iron deficiency. I found last year that by increasing my protein and green veg intake it sorted itself out in a few months.
Lots of people train effectively with 3 days a week. Don't rush the increase.

My two cents; I spent the better half of this year beating myself up for not being faster or better. I turned it all into a total chore to the extent I wasn't enjoying my runs at all.

When I started in 2013 I was a size 18 :o and couldn't do the 60 secs first couch to 5k week for about 2 weeks! Because I was heavier I had to adapt it to suit me and so my progress in two years is way behind what others have done.

My great morun that I was delighted with completing a few weeks ago? When I told someone my time they asked had I gone around twice :o

You're working hard towards your goals and knocking them out of the park. Who gives a hoot what anyone else is doing. Keep asking on here pay attention to the feedback and you will get exactly where you want to be.

Crazy week for me so ended up running only twice instead of three times like I wanted. Still, I felt great for it particularly because I went for a run the morning after my work Christmas party. I think that counts for a few bonus points, right? No one at the party could quite believe that I was planning a run the next day :D but I had and I did!

    Monday 15th December
One hour workout with my personal trainer. Lots of weights and some tough pilates moves!

    Wednesday 17th December
Short run this morning, felt great for having had the rest of a few days.
    Distance: 3.07km
    Time: 27:17

    Saturday 20th December
My plan was to go for 8k but to also take it easy. I’d been out the night before and while I didn’t drink loads (and interspersed my drinks with plenty of water), I still got home quite late so didn’t get a lot of sleep. At around 6k I knew I was fading, so I ran a little bit further before turning around to run back home. I’m quite happy with it though, all things considered! Today was also my last workout of the year with my trainer (back in January!), he did a pre-Christmas assessment and some intense stretches for my legs.
    Distance: 6.38km
    Time: 55:05

I’m not sure what this next week is going to look like in terms of running. I have plans to run, but it all depends on certain things, especially Christmas Day itself. I hope to run home from volunteering on the day but that will only happen if I have enough energy left! Still, I plan on bringing my gear and hoping I can get that run in.

In keeping with what seems to be a new Christmas tradition, I've been sick with a sore throat and cough all week. So, absolutely no running for me.

I did manage some walking on Christmas Day, 5k to the RDS to volunteer at the dinner and hamper pack there, then 5k home. Not sure what time it took as I forgot to turn my tracking app off when I got there but it was definitely under an hour each way.

After I got home I managed to make Christmas dinner for me and my roommate, then took to my bed for the next few days.

I'm starting to feel better and hoping that tomorrow I will be ok enough to actually venture outside and get some fresh air!

Hope everyone had a restful and peaceful Christmas!

    Get well soon!

    Happy 2015, fellow boardsies!

Just a little post to say I didn't get any running done over the Christmas break (well, ok I went for one run!) due to illness.

At first I felt guilty about not doing anything, but then I realised I have a really busy year ahead of me in terms of both personal plans and running plans. So I decided to take this opportunity to really rest up. I'm not sure when I'll get a chance like this again!

As for my running plans, I have some good things lined up that I'm training for and my latest goals are:
    • To run 5 miles in under an hour
    • To run 10k without stopping or walking
    • To run 5k in under 35 minutes

I think those are very achievable for me and I'm looking forward to a great year of running and racing!

First up, the Raheny 5 mile on January 25th! :D

I have no doubt that you will achieve your goals, in fact I'd lay odds you'll be setting new goals by autumn if you maintain the consistency. Best of luck!!

I posted a full report on my blog, but am just putting the race part here as it's quite long. Pre-race, post-race, thank you's and some photos are on my blog if you are interested.

.....after getting onto the road and under the starting gantry my race with myself began in earnest. I really wanted to beat my previous race time, and I wanted to run this race in as close to an hour as I could but given my lack of quality runs this month, I would be happy to come in under 1 hour 10 minutes.

I settled into a slow but steady pace soon enough, but as usual I felt very much on my own as the main pack had disappeared. I wasn’t totally alone however so that was an improvement on past races. I was happy to see runners ahead of me so I knew I was on the right route at least!

I ended up having to run on the footpath from about mile 2 or so as the roads were all open to traffic once the main field passed by. Again, I am not surprised as this happened to me before at a different race. Still, I am determined that one day I will run a road race ON the road! Running on the footpaths, having to wait for traffic and dodge pedestrians…I wonder how many seconds I could shave off my time if I didn’t have to contend with that? That’s a question I will have to answer as I get faster!

I felt pretty good during the race; I knew I was running a good pace and decided not to check my Garmin at all because I didn’t want to pressure myself too much. As long as kept running I was happy. From about mile 3 it started getting tough and for some weird reason I felt my arms going numb and a kind of tingling in my fingers. Very strange! I’m not sure why that happened but I kept on regardless, determined to keep up a running pace.

Coming downhill to the coast road was my favourite part of the run, not only for the downhill but for the view. Wow. It was stunning! I would have stopped to take a picture but I didn’t want to stop. Running the coast road wasn’t easy, on a kind of footpath with cars parked all along it, but I got past all that and then came to the dreaded hill.

I’d done really well up until then but knew I could use the walk so I slowed down a bit and that’s when something happened that’s never happened to me before. A woman who had been running behind me caught up with me and said ‘no, don’t stop! You’re my pacer! You’re setting a great pace!” Me?! Yes, me!! I didn’t want to let her down so I power walked up the hill while she ran beside me; we chatted for a bit about the race and running and at the top of the hill I picked up my pace and started running again. We stuck together for a bit, which was a novelty for me as I have never run with another person before. It really kept me going! When I was feeling the strain and tempted to slow down or walk, she was beside me and I knew I just had to keep running.

Mile 3 to the finish were my toughest miles; everyone, marshalls and finishers kept saying ‘it’s just around the corner’ but really, it wasn’t! Of course I could hear the announcer getting louder as I got closer to the finish and then I did turn a corner and there it was but oh heartbreak of heartbreaks there was a little loop to run before I could hit the homestretch! Being that close to the finish line, but so far away was mentally the toughest challenge of the race. Huge, massive thanks to everyone who stayed on to cheer at the end! That big cheer carried me up the road and gave me that extra charge of energy I needed.

Also, most amazingly and wonderfully, my personal trainer had finished the race well ahead of me and stuck around to see me finish. I turned the penultimate corner and there he was waiting for me with a big cheer. It meant so much to me to see a familiar face when I was struggling, I’ve never had anyone I know cheer me at a race before. It made such a difference! He ran with me for a stretch then left me to sprint for the finish.

And sprint I did. I could see the clock ticking at around the 1:11:00 mark and I knew I had to finish fast if I was going to make it with a chip time of under 1 hour 10. It felt amazing to put on that burst of speed, to know I had that energy left in my legs. For me, it was a fantastic finish to a challenging race. My official chip time was 1:08:17 which is 3 minutes faster than my previous 5 mile race time. I am so, so proud of myself for that!

The post race goodie bag is probably the best goodie bag I’ve ever gotten from a race. Unfortunately it was filled with chocolate, caffeine drinks and fizzy drinks and since I don’t eat chocolate or drink caffeine or fizzy drinks I had to give much of it away. Love the protein bars and digestives though! Those I can eat! I missed the prize giving as it was over by the time I finished, and I didn’t even know there was tea/coffee in the GAA club house. Oh well, I will know for next year!

All in all it was a great race and I will definitely run this again next year! Big thanks to the people of Raheny who came out to cheer us on and to all the volunteers and organizers for putting on such a great race!

Great race report, thank you! Especially loved the bit about pacing and not giving in, I really really felt proud of you (stranger on the internet :D ). Well done for not being a slave to the garmin and especially, well done on the PB. You've been a bit quiet round here lately so wasn't sure how training was going...you've answered that one loud and clear! (Ps prize giving was still going on up til 5 so next year...)

Thank you! Your comment has made my day :D

I haven't been posting much, I think I took a little break from blogging/posting without intending too. I must have needed it!

I'll try to make it for the prizes next year but I never win anyway; would like to watch it though, just for the buzz!
