It is truly incredible to behold these three staying COMPLETELY quiet on:

    1. The downgrading of our city.

    2. The downgrading of our hospital.

    3. The University issue.

    4. The airport

    5. The farce that is Irish Water

    5. In general, the neglect of Waterford City by this mob. Not even a cabinet minister. And the subjugation of an entire populace to International banks.

    Truly incredible.

And people will still vote for them and defend them on message fora.

and speaking of residency, doesn't David Cullinane live in Kilkenny?

Ms Conway is in the Independent today bemoaning the fact that there is only one place for nappy changing in the Dail.
Given what's happening in the country , not to mention her county at present, I wonder about her priorities.
There may be more than nappies changed at the next election !

How many workplaces have any places for nappy changing?

She is always talking about national issues.

She's making a valid point here - if we want to see more women in politics (and why wouldn't we?) than we need to make the Dail a more friendly place.

What have women got to do with nappies? Do only women change nappies or look after children?

She may well get first hand experience of periwinkle picking after the election.

Steady on lads, the gender quota is only about the candidates that are put forward, so that there's a balance for you to choose from. Once you're in the polling booth, you should be voting for quality candidates, irrespective of their gender (or indeed sexual orientation, looks, race, favourite football team, etc!).

It doesn't matter. If there's a gender quota for candidates, it means that some other people who might be better suited, could be left out. That is discriminatory. A women who wants to be a candidate for a political party should do exactly the same as a man has to do, and work their way up to it.

The choice in the polling booth will be fixed. I won't vote for a woman in any party that has gender quotas, because I won't know if she really deserves to be there. And I won't vote for that party, because they are practicing discrimination.

I don't think too many Irish women actually want to be in politics, that's why they're bringing in this quota. Some parties are finding it difficult to get women to put forward for the next election. Would rather vote for Willie Frazer than for most women candidates!

If they don't want to be in politics, they're not going to want to be in politics because there's a quota, are they? No, women will use it to bypass the hard slog of working your way up the party by doing to day stuff, and will expect to be parachuted in.

I don't understand what your last sentence means. What's wrong with most women candidates? As of now, most of them have got there the hard way, like their male counterparts.

Rubbish - we have always been been voting for Ciara Conway's as in useless politicians. That would be as opposed to a lot more John Deasy's or Paudie Coffey's or the countless number of completely useless male politicians we have had and continue to have, in this county and country. More women will just mean a better reflection of the society we live, not particularly better politicians (on saying that we can't get any worse) its not just for the boys, etc.

Why can't women politicians be just as useless as their male counter parts; why are higher standards expected.

Fortunately, your sexist comment does show why gender quotas are needed all the same :D

The following info is from a piece written in the Irish Times, its points out that the candidate selection process (selected almost always by the old boys network) is a major obstacle for both women and possible women candidates. The public don't particularly have a bias but the party candidate selectors do, hence the need for gender quotas, in the short term at the very least.

There were 566 candidates fielded in the last general election. Only 86 were women. The average success rate for both men and women in that election was the same: 29%, which would indicate that there is no bias against female candidates among the Irish electorate.

The candidate selection processes of political parties have been identified as posing a significant obstacle to the political participation of women (due to a prevailing masculine culture, perhaps?). In Fine Gael for example, 42% of the membership is female yet only 15% of candidates fielded in election 2011 were women.

It is now time that political parties field candidates who are reflective of the electorate they will represent. Our public representatives exist to represent the people. Women make up 50% of the population but have never made up more than 14% of TDs.

It may take decades before all social, cultural and political barriers preventing equal representation of women are tackled. Quotas can “kick-start” the process of getting more women elected to the Dáil.

As Garret FitzGerald said, “Our party system, lacking significant female input, is bound to be incomplete and defective”. – Yours, etc,

They have tried to get the old boys network to voluntarily balance the scales in relation to selection process and the traditional pro bias that exists towards males, this hasn't happened in any way, shape or form, this despite repeated assurances from the male elite, that it woul! Now it has been decided to bring about balance by giving female candidates the same pro bias, that male candidates enjoyed for so long. It's hoped that this will only be needed in the short term and not for the 100's of years that it applied to men only. Where there is obvious pro bias existing towards men and women are now being given the same advantage, then men are not being discriminated against, but women are being give the same advantage the men enjoy

Discrimination is never right, no matter what the purpose. If women want to be candidates for election, and get into the tough world of politics, they have to have the cojones to fight the old boy's network.
