New wall light will not light

Got a new wall light with two clear wires in the unit
Two cables coming out of wall - 1 with neutral blue and another cable with a brown live and an earth.
No matter what way I connected the light would not come on. I ignored the earth wire.
Tried the light in another room and it worked fine.
When I turn on switch on wall the brown goes live.
Any ideas what could be wrong?

    Did the previous light work?

Its quite normal to see linked neutrals at a light fitting, have a good look for another neutral

First time using it...wires hanging for last 8 years 😊.
When I connect up light and turn on switch on wall both wires now appear live but only one is live when unit is disconnected.

You need to get an electrician in or someone would knows electrics, may need to open up switch and do some wire tracing.
