Do you think you're recovered after Limerick Bulmers? That was a serious effort you put in, maybe the hamstring is just the body asking you to cool the jets for a few days?

Don't think I'm recovered fully & you're probably right about the hamstring - I'm probably been a bit overly keen for my own good. Will take things very easy for a few days.

    Sunday 17th
    12.05 @ 7:55
Out & back from home. Nothing major to report. Caught some coldish rain during this from what I can remember. Brought up 47 miles for the week.

    Monday 18th
    8.20 @ 7:59
Easy run before work done & dusted before 7.

    Tuesday 19th
    8.36 @ 8:00
Carbon copy of the previous mornings run. Quickened up the final .36 to 6:33 pace (felt good).

    Wednesday 20th
    8.58 @ 7:50
Another early morning run. Threw in 5 or 6 strides over the last mile or so. No complaints from the hamstring.

    Thursday 21st
    8.10 @ 8:10
Again out early before work. Purposely slowed down the easy pace a touch as I was getting a bit carefree with the easy pace over the previous few days.

    Friday 22nd
No run in the morning as I was half thinking of running the 5 mile race in Kilmallock later on in the evening. Was kinda 50/50 whether I'd do it but about 4pm I decided to give it a shot. The truth is I was looking forward to doing a run with others if nothing else. Had brought the gear with me so I travelled directly from work. Got there in good time, registered & had a chat with a few I knew. Did a mile (8:28) of a warm up with a club mate & did a few stretches. The weather was nice & mild if a little breezy. The profile of the course seemed fairly flat, looking at it before hand with the only 'drags' in the second half. I call them drags but to be fair after running it, it would be hard to get a much nicer course. Didn't really have any race plan but was hoping that I'd average around 6:25 pace over the 5 miles (which would be sub 40 10k pace). Off we went with the minimum of fuss, bang on time. A little bit of jockeying for position in the first couple of hundred metres, as you'd expect, but traffic wasn't too bad. Headed up through the town with the breeze into our faces. Around here I fell in behind a guy from Bruff I know from club training who'd be around the same level as myself. Turned off in to the country and hit the mile 1 marker in 6:17. Thought it was a little bit fast but put it down to the adrenaline. Mile 2 was probably net down hill but I eased off the gas ever so slightly to try & conserve something. The split for mile 2 came in at 6:17 also. At this stage I was thinking to myself to just to keep maintaining effort. Was passing a few here and in fact after the first half mile no one passed me at all. In the third mile I made up the 5 metres or so on the guy from Bruff without upping the effort and felt he was flagging a bit. I went past him and he didn't come with me. Was passing a few all the time & hit mile 3 in 6:20. Just happened to glance at the watch at 3.12 miles & it showed 19:39. My thought at that stage was I could blow up here! Anyway despite this thought I decided I'd made my bed and tried to maintain pace while the effort level was increasing a touch. Mile 4 contained the only drag and I was beginning to find things getting tougher. Passed what turned out to be the first & second woman in this mile who were having a right battle. The split for that mile came in at 6:24. Entered the final mile & as I went on to the main road I looked at the watch with the pace showing 6:40  I decided to forget about the watch and just keep putting one foot in front of the other. The breeze was into our faces again here which wasn't ideal as this was where I felt I was wilting a bit mentally. Ignored the negative thoughts and passed 2 or 3 on this stretch. Took a right back into the town & got respite from the breeze. Had my sights on another target throughout the final half mile and although I made up ground on him I couldn't mount any real sprint over the last 200. The spilt for the last mile was 6:21. Crossed the line in a chip time of 31:46 which I was happy with considering I have no 8k/10k specific training done.
    Splits were 6:17, 6:17, 6:20, 6:24, 6:21, 5:11 (.02).

First time doing this race and would recommend it. Well run club race with chip timing, flat course, a great spread (including cheese cake:D) and all for a tenner.

    Saturday 23rd
    4.15 @ 9:26
Recovery run. No ill effects of last nights race:).

Well done J! Its a tasty course alright and much better than the old one. Looking well on track for the sub-40 in Coillte.

Yeah hopefully I can come on a bit more over the next month or so. Was hoping to do Sixmilebridge next Friday but can't make it. Will probably do our own 4 miler the following week.

    Sunday 24th
    14.09 @ 8:04
Nothing too eventful on this run although I do remember it been coldish & there was rain. Brought up 57+ miles for the week.

    Monday 25th
    9.32 @ 8:04
Didn't do this 'til Monday evening as the rain in the morning persuaded me to stay in bed.

    Tuesday 26th
    AM 5.08 @ 8:07
    Easy run pre work.

    PM Club session - 4 x 3 minutes 5k pace off 2 mins recovery
    1.91 warm up on grass
    Paces for the tempo sections were 6:03, 6:05ish, 6:01 & 5:58.
Made a bit of a balls with the watch for the second interval by hitting stop instead of lap at some stage:rolleyes:. Estimated pace from where I finished on the track.
    1.29 cool down

    Wednesday 27th
    10.03 @ 8:04
Out before 6 for this - looking back now, probably a bit far considering the session the night before:confused:. Logic unknown:o

    Thursday 28th
Plan over the next few weeks is to do some 10k specific sessions with the 10k in Dundrum on the 1st of July the focus. The plan for this session was 8 x 1k off 2 mins. Went to the track in Bilboa for this & was hoping for splits in or around 3:55. After a 2 mile warm up I got stuck in. Splits came in at 3:54, 3:50, 3:49, 3:53, 3:51, 3:52, 3:50, 3:51. Definitely wasn't easy & doing this type of session on my own is a bit of a new departure for me. Got a shower of biblical proportions in reps 5 and 6 which made things a bit miserable. In earlier reps I was checking the watch every so often but by midway I was a bit more tuned into the pace.

Did a 2 mile cool down which brought the total for the day to 10.5

Up in Galway for a couple of days with Mrs B (a trip that was deferred due to marathon training:rolleyes:) and managed to get for a run out and back to near Barna by Salthill. A bit windy by the coast but enjoyable.

    Saturday 30th

Nice run again this morning out to Salthill. Took in the newly done up path down by the coast at the end of the prom. This was out of commission last year when I up in Galway and is a lovely new tarmac surface.

Must start logging more frequently as I don't remember a whole lot bout some of these runs:(
    Sunday 31st
    16.03 @ 8:17
Long run last weekend - remember making a conscious decision not to run too quick. Brought up almost 76 miles for the week & 223 for the month.

    Monday 1st
    10.07 @ 8:05
Was off work so didn't have to be up too early for this.

    Tuesday 2nd
    AM 6.11 @ 8:03
    PM 8.07 @ 8:00 including w/u & c/d
    Club session - 5 x 3 mins @ 5k pace off 2 minutes
    Pace for reps was 6:08, 6:07, 6:05, 6:09, & 6:05

    Wednesday 3rd
    AM 6.37 @ 8:33
PM 5.03 @ 8:38 - didn't feel great starting out on this as I did it too soon after eating.

    Thursday 4th
    10.04 @ 8:07
Out early for this before work.

    Friday 5th
    Mungret 4 mile race - 24:48
Decided to do this on the way home from work in Limerick. The race was another one in the Ballyhoura series & was hosted by our own club - Dooneen. Got there in plenty of time and did a drive round the course to suss the lie of the land. The first mile & a half were fairly flat and then there was about a 400m pull up to the Patrickswell Road. Mile 3 was fairly level with a bit of downhill at the end and the last mile had a few drags. Did registration & chatted to a few people. Did a bit of a warm back over the last 3/4 of a mile of the course (1.6 @ 8:11). What wasn't obvious from the drive of the course was that the breeze was strong enough and would be into our faces for the last 1/2 mile or more. Met Ger664 & had a bit of a chat. Started in the village and took a left out into the country. Didn't get the best of starts & got a bit boxed over the first 200m or so. Once we turned left space opened up & I tried to settle into a steady pace. The plan was sub 25 & 6:15 pace based on a 6:20 average in the 5 miler 2 weeks ago. There was a bit of a cross wind here with a bit of shelter from the ditch in places. Somewhere around here I came across Ger & I grunted to acknowledge my presence:o. Hit the first mile in 6:12 & was feeling ok-ish. Got to the longest drag & passed a few but knew the pace was dropping on the incline & didn't bother looking at the watch. Got up the 'hill' and took a bit of a breather before pushing on again. The split for the second mile was 6:11. Passed what turned out to be the first lady & a guy I knew from Limerick AC here and I was beginning to feel the pressure. Headed towards the South Court hotel and took a left which had a little bit of down hill (not as much as I would've liked!). Really felt at this stage that I may have overcooked the pace but I felt the same 2 weeks ago and just ploughed on. 3rd mile came in at 6:14 so still on target. Took a left at the Mungret roundabout and was on the final stretch into the breeze. The quads were beginning to hurt and I was swearing to myself I'd never do this short stuff ever again:rolleyes:. With about 400 to go came up behind a lad from Bruff that I know. Sat there for a while for a bit of shelter and then went by him before we came to the last bit which was a 50 metre incline. On the hill my friend from Bruff bolted around me & I didn't have it in the legs to match him. He ended up taking 4 seconds outta me. Got in to the GAA grounds and pushed for the line as best I could and the last mile came in at 6:13. Happy I gave it all I had on the night. Did a few laps of the playing fields with Ger & MiketheMechanic to cool down (.61 @ 10:53). Into the hall afterwards for some eats and a chat.

    Saturday 6th
    9.45 @ 7:58
Did this in Limerick yesterday evening on the way home from work. Probably a bit much as I could feel the race still in the legs:rolleyes:.

    Sunday 7th
    14.05 @ 8:09
Was tired starting out on this but settled into it after a few miles. Lovely morning for it. Brought up 75 miles for the week.

Club session for next week is 6 x 3 mins @ 5k pace off 2 mins on Tuesday. Next Friday I'm kinda unsure as to either race another 4 miler or do 5 or 6 mile reps @ 10 k pace - thoughts anyone??

Take it handy a small bit, your just coming off marathon training is my advice, probably way wrong but thats my 2 cents.

I hear what you're saying alright & probably should ease back a bit on the mileage front. I suppose I'm trying to keep a couple of things in the air at once which mightened be the best idea coming off a hard block of training. The thinking was to keep up a decent base with the mileage in advance of the next marathon cycle while also getting the 5k to 10k work done with the sessions/racing.

Following on from Tang's post above & after taking some further advice I decided to ease back a bit on the mileage this week.
    Monday 8th
    9.12 @ 8:27
In line with the new approach I've decided to dispense with the doubles for the time being. Got out after 9pm for this and kept the pace very easy.

    Tuesday 9th
    6.17 @ 7:33
    https://connect.garmin.com/activity/799307396
Planned club session was 6 x 3 minutes @ 5k pace off 2 mins recovery.
Had a very busy day at work & wasn't sure I'd make this but did - just about! Only managed just over a mile warm up due to been a bit late. Paces for the intervals were 6:00, 5:59, 5:58, 5:56, 5:53, & 5:51. Very happy with these I've got to say notwithstanding the fact that they were done on the track and a good bit faster than last weeks 5 reps. Put this down to a couple of factors 1. fresher legs - no 5 miler that morning & 2. was wearing the lighter footwear - hitogamis.

    Wednesday 10th
    6.28 @ 8:27
Out before 6 for this - summer has finally arrived:) (I think:rolleyes:).

    Thursday 11th
    7.07 @ 8:17
Another early easy run pre work.

    Friday 12th
Was undecided as whether to do a session of 5/6 mile reps or another 4 mile race. Opted for the race :D with Kilfinnane AC the latest club to host as part of the Ballyhoura series. With an 8pm start I got there in plenty of time. Did registration with just a short queue, then back to the car to tog off. It was still quite warm & there was little breeze. Did a bit of a warm up (1.49 @ 8:33), as I did last week travelling back over what would be the last 1/2 mile or so of the race. I'd read during the week that the first 1/2 mile was slight downhill, 3 miles flattish & 1/2 mile drag at the end. The last 1/2 mile was definitely going to be a drag and I was glad afterwards that I was familiar with the finish. Took off on time and there was a bit of a gallop down the first stretch with everything settled down after a couple of hundred metres. After about 1/2 a mile we turned onto a narrower country road and I set about my work. This week I seemed to be working harder from earlier in the race & when I saw a split of 5:58 for the first mile it may have been part of the reason. I knew from the profile of the course that the first mile would be the fastest so wasn't overly concerned despite it been the fastest mile I've ever ran in a race (to date;)). Even from here I was passing a few that had gone out too hard and was able to judge how I was going from a few I'd recognised from racing over the last number of weeks. Passed the lead woman after about 1.5 miles and it was a case of maintaining effort as I went. Split for the second mile was 6:10 which was fine by me. Effort levels were rising a bit here & felt I was a bit far from home for the pressure to be coming on. Kept on going and hit 3 miles with a 6:14 split. A touch slower than I would've liked as I felt I had upped the effort to match the pace of the previous mile. Had kept the thought of the hill in the last 1/2 mile out of my mind until this point but now it was playing on my thoughts. Felt I was working way harder than at any stage last week and wondered if I'd run outta steam in the last bit. There was a group of 5 about 25/30 metres ahead & they took my focus for the last mile. I started to recognise the road now from my warm up & knew the end was close. Caught the group of 5 with around 300 to go & ran straight to the front upping the pace a touch. There seemed to be a bit of cat & mouse been played between the 5 and I reckoned some were saving themselves for a sprint. I knew I had nothing for a sprint so was just hoping all 5 wouldn't pass me again. 3 of the group passed me in the last 100 & I had nothing left to give. Split for the last mile was 6:25. A touch late stopping the watch after crossing the line with a time of 24:49 showing. PB from last week was 24:48 so I'd have to wait for the chip result to see about a pb. Chip time came in at 24:47 :D - a 1 second pb. Felt this was a better run than last week and a quick scan through the results of both races would seem to confirm this. The majority of the names in the top 40 that ran both weeks had a slower time in Kilfinnane. After crossing the line, on the way to the hall for the grub I felt the left groin tightening a bit & it seemed to be getting worse. After scoffing the grub I headed to the car & thought the leg would be in a jock by the time I'd be home but strangely it seemed to be ok.
    https://connect.garmin.com/activity/803469812

    Saturday 13th
    4.14 @ 9:27
With no complaints from the groin out for a bit of active recovery - all good.

    Sunday 14th
    15.02 @ 8:04
Lovely morning for the long run with a little bit of breeze on the outward run from home. Pace naturally picked up a bit on the way back. Felt good. I was advised not to do more than 14 for the long run but decided to do 15 just to show I'm not a total conformist and all round goody two shoes :P

40:25 garmin time - happy with that on that course.
    Near 1 minute pb
About 3 minutes faster on this course from last year.
Off to the airport for the 5k run now - will take it handy ;)

    Monday 15th
    10.09 @ 8:23
    Out early before work.

    Tuesday 16th
    5ish miles @ various paces.
Club session was 10 x 35 secs @ mile pace off 1 minute recovery
Did 2.75 miles warm up on grass. Although on paper this looks handy enough I found it tough I have to say & the legs were fairly battered afterwards. Fairly warm too & sweated accordingly! Made another balls up with the watch so only had the splits for the first 3 reps. Don't read too much into the paces anyway on such a short rep in any case. Did over a mile cool down on grass.

    Wednesday 17th
    8.20 @ 8:15
Left this 'til evening as when I woke the legs felt fairly tender from the previous nights session. Went a tad further than planned but it was such a nice evening for a run.

    Thursday 18th
    6.28 @ 8:16
Didn't have to be at work until a bit later than normal so didn't have to be up at cock crow for this easy run.

    Friday 19th
    Gerry Mullane memorial 10k
    40:25 - 56 second pb
    https://connect.garmin.com/activity/811034443
This was the latest instalment of the Ballyhoura series and was hosted by Bilboa AC. Having done this race the last 2 years I knew what to expect and it's a tough course. First mile is down hill, 2 flat miles, 2 miles of incline & a fast last mile. My plan for the race was to try & go sub sub 40 (6:25 pace) for the first time which was optimistic for this course but what the hell. Did 5 laps of the track as a warm up (1.67 @ 8:30) before heading up the road for the start. Racing every week with the same heads you get to know how you're going without ever having to look at the watch. So off we went at a gallop down past the club house and towards the Doon Cappamore road. Hit mile 1 in 6:06 which was a bit fast (maybe a bit too fast) but it is a net down hill mile. Mile 2 is towards the village of Cappamore and although quite warm we were heading into a bit of a head wind. Mile 2 came in at 6:27 which was ok by me. Was a little bit worried as I was still with a guy I know has a tendency to go off a bit fast and would only see him at the end of a race. Around here he seemed to pull away but I was maintaining pace so let him go. Spoke to him afterwards & he said he purposely went off a bit slower this week and paced things a bit better & got his sub 40. Mile 3 also came in at 6:27 and I kinda knew from the effort I was putting in and with the hills to come sub 40 wasn't probably going to happen. So got to halfway & it was going to be a drag all the way for the next mile & it was time to start sucking it up. There was 2 lads ahead of me and I kept my focus on them and tried not to look at the road rising up ahead of me. Came right up behind them at the top of the hill & could've passed them but decided not to as I knew there was more pain to come. That mile came in at 6:45 & didn't bother with the watch after that. There was the slightest of respite from the incline for a few hundred metres and the 2 lads pulled away a bit. Got to the bottom of the next/last/steepest hill and dug in. Passed one of the 2 lads and tried to keep in touch with the other one. Split for that mile was 7:01. I knew there was only about 300 more metres of incline before the fast last downhill mile. Was relieved to get to the top and was blowing hard. Took the first 30 secs downhill a bit easy before winding up. Last year I had 4 or 5 to race against but this year I was on my own. Caught sight of lad I was behind every so often which was good. Mile 6 was 6:17. With 400 to go I was gaining a bit but I never caught him and he finished about 7 secs ahead of me. All in all I was satisfied with how I went without been thrilled - it was a solid performance. Since I did this race last year I've done 2 marathon cycles and ran over 3000 miles & was hoping for a little faster but it wasn't to be. Did a bit of a cool down (1.08 @ 9:58) and had some eats in the club house.
On a positive note I ran 43:01 here last year and went on to run 41:21 in Dundrum. I'm not saying that I'll knock 100 seconds off my Bilboa time this year but sub 39 is possible. Hopefully conditions will be favourable and give me a shot at it:eek:.

After Bilboa headed home had a quick shower and headed back to Shannon to do the Airport runway 5k. The adrenaline from the 10k must've still been flowing a bit as I was looking forward to this. Normally I wouldn't do such a thing but the fact that a lot from work were running, I said I'd give it a whirl. The plan had always been to race the 10k and trot around the 5k. Spotted a good few others that had done both races.

    Saturday 20th
    3.04 @ 6:32
    https://connect.garmin.com/activity/811034362
As the race started after midnight it counts as my Saturday run, right?? Really, really enjoyed this. Great buzz around the airport with 1700 participants knocking about. Got to the start and was wondering was I making a mistake running this:rolleyes:. Of course I wasn't if I didn't run it too fast:p. Only gave a race plan a thought on the start line and decided to start handy & run progressively if the legs didn't give out too much. I loved I was under no pressure from myself or the watch as I wouldn't be able to refer to it in the dark - it was going to be all by feel:). After the starting flare went off into the night sky there was a mad dash for the first 200 - lots of cutting across people and general craziness. Seemed like loads passed me off the start line but I didn't care & was wondering how the legs would react after the earlier race. After the first k out the taxiway to the main runway I knew the legs weren't going to fail me & picked the pace up a touch. I was passing people all the way to the finish from here. Splits came in at 6:55, 6:29, 6:16 & 5:10 (.04). Got a shout out from a few of the lads from work around halfway (who were stewarding) and picked it up another notch. Surprised with the splits afterwards and happy. It was still very humid & on the way home afterwards the temperature gauge was still showing 16C.
Was still buzzing when I got home & couldn't wind down:( so it was after 3 when I got to sleep. Was up again after 7 so was knackered. Plenty of core work ensued with the day spent in the bog with plenty of muscles not usually stretched put to use:eek:. Thought about a recovery run later in the evening but decided against.

    Sunday 21st
    13.15 @ 8:04
Long run this morning in much cooler & fresher conditions. All good - no drama in some drizzly weather.

Bilboa? Exotic! Solid is right - nice PB.

Sub-39, looks like I'll have to settle for 2nd in the boards race:)

That's a good run man! Often being out on a cycle around there and it's tough going. Well done!

Those 35s reps will stiffen you out alright but they won't overcook you.

I don't think exotic is a word anyone who was ever there would use to describe the place ;). It is in a nice rural setting though & is a fine club with good facilities.

Nice going J, the sub 40 is there, no doubt about it. I think your first mile was a bit quick alright, even if it was downhill. I'd be of the thinking of keeping a bit for the inclines ahead.. On another note, I believe you are there or thereabouts regarding your Dundrum plan. Providing no mishaps or surprises...

You were a bit mad to be doing the 5k though :D:D

We'll see on the day but as I said it's a possibility if things go right. As for the 'boards race' you'll destroy me on that course.
Kinda wondering about what to do speed wise during the week. Can't make club on Tuesday - so I'll be going solo, any ideas? There's also a 5k on Friday in South Tipp I was looking at - madness or not??

Ah, will you come out of the fog! Just when I thought the sandbags had been bust open:D you're well ahead of me now. The course looks unreal though, looking at the profile today and there doesn't seem to be even a speedbump.

I'd say it's madness to run a 5k this Friday, don't want to go stale when the big un is coming up especially after having a good batch of races in the last few weeks, something short and speedy would be nice instead of the race, a few 400's or so at 3-5k pace.

As for Tuesday, If your not racing Friday. A longer session of km or mile repeats would be ok at 10k pace. 8x1k off 2 min rec or 5x1m off 3min or something like that would be good imo. If you are racing, I wouldn't do anything more than 5-6x1k. Need to be fresh for the goal race.:)

    Monday 22nd
    10.06 @ 8:12
Wasn't starting work 'til mid morning so went for this at around half eight. Don't remember too much about it now.

    Tuesday 23rd
Working in Dublin Tuesday & Wednesday. Plan was to do mile reps if I could find somewhere suitable. Had a bit of bother sending the workout to the watch so just adjusted the interval function to load the required session. Plan was 5 x 1 mile @ 10k pace off 3 minutes jog recovery. Was staying on the southside near Portobello bridge and didn't fancy doing the reps along the canal so with a quick look at google maps decided to go towards Eamonn Ceannt Park to suss the lie of the land. Ran down there and did a lap of the park as warm up (2.11 @ 8:19) and decided the park would do the job. A lap of the park wasn't quite a mile but the surface was good and despite the fine, warm evening it wasn't too crowded. Off I set & realised that whatever way I'd the display set up I couldn't see the pace I was moving at. Initial thought was balls but then thought just do it by feel which would be a change. Paces came it at 6:33, 6:25, 6:29, 6:18 & 6:19 which gives an average of 6:25. Despite been a bit conscious of not having the watch in the first rep I just settled on an effort I thought was sustainable. No drama but was glad when the last mile was done. Happy with the paces when I looked back on them when I got home - the average was there or there about. Continued on up on to the canal on the cool down.

    Wednesday 24th
    8.11 @ 8:19
Didn't get out 'til after 9pm for this & motivation levels were a bit low. Told myself I'd do 5 or 6 and I pushed it out to over 8. Happy to have done it afterwards when there had been a possibility that I'd bag it.

    Thursday 25th
    6.38 @ 8:24
A few easy miles before work.

    Friday 26th
    8.44 @ 8:21
    https://connect.garmin.com/activity/815187737

Plan was to do 5 x .35 mile @ about 3k pace off 90 seconds recovery. Decided to go with NE's suggestion above instead of the 5K race. As it transpired the logistics of the race would've been hard to work out in any case. The only reason I went with .35 of a mile was because that's roughly what a lap of Bilboa track is. Was unsure as to how much recovery to give myself. Had toyed with the idea of 1 minute or 2 and decided to split the difference in the end. Ran down to the track as a warm up which was about 3 miles. As with Tuesday's session I decided to go with feel rather than referring to the watch & it worked out fairly ok. Paces came in at 6:03, 5:39, 5:42, 5:46 & 5:42 which gave an average of 5:47. May have been a touch on the fast side as the shuffle/jog recovery progressed to a 60 second walk, 30 second jog on the last recovery. 3 easy miles home to cool down. Later on in the day there was no evidence of the session in the legs which may be down to the longer cool down or could be the 'easier', shorter session.

    Saturday 27th
    13.15 @ 7:52
    https://connect.garmin.com/activity/817540268

With one eye on the 10K on Wednesday next week I decided to get my long run done a day earlier than usual. A slight risk I know, considering the previous days session but the legs felt ok and I plotted a route which gave me options to cut short if I needed to. Was working early and did this when I finished. Was hoping to do around 12 miles. Ended up with half marathon distance more by accident than design as I changed my original out & back plan to mix up the scene a bit.

    Sunday 28th
    6.40 @ 8:01
Easy run this morning in the sunshine to round off the week.

Happy with the week with 2 solid sessions. Weather forecast is looking hot for mid week - hope it doesn't effect race conditions too much on Wednesday. Plan is to do a couple of easy runs tomorrow & Tuesday to keep things ticking over.

Cheers Marty. Tonights race wasn't part of that series. There's 2 races left, with a 5 mile on Friday & a half on the 11th or 12th. Won't be doing the half as I've a wedding that weekend but might do the 5 miler.

    Coillte 10k Dundrum 39:33 – 52 second pb :D

    https://connect.garmin.com/activity/821156705

Since the marathon in Limerick I’d my eye on this race as I’d done it last year bagging a healthy pb at the time (41:22). The route is as flat as you get and is believed to be one of the flattest in Munster. Having done 4 races in the Ballyhoura series in the last number of weeks & having done some decent speed sessions I felt I was in reasonable enough shape coming into this. Having run 40:25 in Bilboa 10 days ago (which is a far tougher course) I wasn’t contemplating not breaking 40 here and was hoping to be nearer 39 tbh.
The route consisted of 2 5k loops and my plan for the race was to try & hit around 6:20 pace on the first lap and pick it up a bit on the second if I could. The weather was quite warm & muggy and I definitely didn’t want to overcook things at the start. Got to Dundrum in plenty of time & did registration with no hassle. This was the 30th running of this race & they had the full results of all the previous years up on the wall in the hall which was a nice touch, I thought, for anyone interested. Did a little over a mile of a warm up around the small gravel track & did some stretching. I noticed there was a bit of a breeze blowing & I figured it would be in to our faces for the 1st & 4th miles. Met a few I knew & made my way down to the start. Took my place about 3 rows back from the line & we were off with little delay.
Mile 1 – 3 (6:23, 6:16, 6:20) Off we set down through the village with the all the usual enthusiasm you’d expect off the start line. Had a glance at the watch after about 300 & saw 5:40 so gently applied the brakes. It seemed as if half the field passed me at this stage but in reality it was probably about 15. The breeze didn’t seem too bad but then there was a bit of shelter from the surrounding pack. Shortly after this 3 guys from Bruff passed me, one of which was the guy who out sprinted me on the last hill in Mungret. Although I didn’t tag right on to the back of the trio they were never too far away and I was using them as a reference. Continued on out the Tipperary Road hitting the mile marker in 6:23. Shortly after this we turned left out of the breeze. At this stage I had tagged on to the back of the Bruff trio and we were passing a few all the time as we went. We turned left again on to a road which was very sheltered and was nice & cool in parts. Glanced at the watch every now & then to make sure we were maintaining pace and all was going ok. The split for mile 2 was 6:16. The 4 of us kept going together for most of the next mile but before we came back in to the village one of the guys started to fall back a bit. I kept going with the other 2 as we approached the village. Split for this mile was 6:20.
Mile 4 - finish (6:27, 6:24, 6:24 & 5:33 (.23))We turned left in to the village crossing the start line and without the shelter of a crowd the breeze was quite noticeable. We crossed the finish line with a circuit to go & the 2 boys took some water. Got a split time of 20.10 for 5.2k and I was in 50th position. I felt strong enough to pass them at this point but decided against heading into the wind on my own. I was glad afterwards as I met 2 runners that had stopped up and were walking back towards the village. It turned out to be the toughest stretch of the race in the conditions. Mile 4 came in at 6:27 and was to be my slowest mile. Shortly after the next left turn one of the two Bruff lads pushed on. Felt going with him might be a bit much this far from home. After about another half mile I eased away from my remaining companion as I felt the pace dropping ever so slightly. There were another couple of targets ahead so this was something I could aim for. Mile 5 split was 6:24. Looked at the watch here and saw I was a little under 32 so that kept me going. Passed 2 guys here and one of them reacted and passed me again. After a while I passed him again and although he tried to come with me I seemed to put a bit of distance between us. I wasn’t accelerating here but seemed to be maintaining pace by increasing effort. I was beginning to feel the pressure at this stage and was thinking I’d have nothing left for a kick. Decided I’d worry about that in a half a miles time and kept pushing. I could see a Dundrum AC vest a good bit up ahead so kept my focus on that. Mile 6 came in at 6:24. Time to start winding up now and empty the tank. The head wind felt like a gale but I kept driving. The Dundrum vest was coming back to me and it gave me a bit more will to push. I ran out of road in the end & finished a second behind him and 41st place. The .23 came in at 5:33 pace. Never sure whether been able to put in that effort for the last bit is a sign of a good kick or poor pacing over the preceding 6 miles.
Anyway delighted to get under 40 for the first time. Fairly wrecked afterwards and managed a 10 minute mile to recover before heading to the hall for a bite & a chat. Got home and Bulmers09 was just going to bed. After reading him a story he asks me about the race.

B09 - So how did the race go?
Me - Great, I ran faster than I ever ran before!
B09 - Did you run as fast as me?
    Me- Not quite that fast.
B09 - Do ya know how many gears I have?
    Me - No, tell me.
B09 - 200 million & 5. Do ya know how many gears you have?
    Me - No, how many?
    B09 - (Long pause) Eh 16

So I guess the moral of the story is I’ve a few more gears to find yet:P And you know what, I’m looking forward to trying but not sure how many I’ll find.

    Monday 29th
    5.47 @ 8:12
Easy run before work with 5 strides in the last mile to keep things ticking over.

    Tuesday 30th
    4.22 @ 8:25
Again another short easy run before work

    Wednesday 1st
Coillte 10K pb 39:33 as reported above.

    Thursday 2nd
    4.12 @ 9:10
Woke up at one stage during the night just in time to avert a full on calf cramp  Recovery run before work. Legs were a bit tender starting off but loosened out a bit. Probably ran it a bit too fast to be a true recovery - first mile 9:42, last mile 8:50.

    Friday 3rd
    w/u 1.33 @ 9:02
    Bruff 5 mile race 5.02 @ 7:00
    https://connect.garmin.com/activity/824451818
    c/d .81 @ 8:29
Decided last minute to do this. Came home from work and decided to head for Bruff as it would be the last of the Ballyhoura Limerick races that I'd be around for. If you raced 5 outta the 7 events you'd get a series t-shirt and this, I have to admit was the main reason for going :o
Got there and met a few from the club and did a bit of a warm up. All I knew starting was that I wouldn't race it flat out as the effort of Wednesday was still in the legs. After a mile I settled in with a couple from the club who were going for sub 35. Helped them as best I could sheltering them from the strong headwind in miles 2,3 & 4 but still couldn't drag them under 35. One finished 35:01 and the other 35:08 with me coming home in 35:10. On the way home in the car I was a bit p!ssed off that I hadn't raced it.

    Saturday 4th
    5.05 @ 8:21
Woke up Saturday morning and the legs were quite stiff so maybe it was just as well I didn't go any faster than marathon pace the night before. In hindsight I just shouldn't have bothered going - mentally or physically it didn't tick any boxes, lesson learned:rolleyes:
Didn't do this run until evening time and the legs felt ok.

    Sunday 5th
    15.07 @ 7:54
Felt strong on this today. Lovely sunny weather for the first 10 miles, bucketed for the next 4 & the sun came out again for the last mile.

Mentally I haven't fully committed to the idea of an October marathon yet as the 10K was the mini focus for the last while. Will think things through next week. Plan to do a week of easy running next week with a couple of rest days. That would give me 15 weeks for a marathon block, all going well.
