Sydney over Christmas and New Year

Flying into Sydney for a 3 week holiday on the 23rd of Dec until the 9th of Jan. Staying with some friends over there. Don't want to spend the 3 weeks inside some pub so I need a plan of things to do to avoid this. Anyone ever been? Also thinking of moving outside the city in January for a few days but is it worth it?
