    Hi All

Would sincerely appreciate some assistance on this.

My husband works for a large American Multinational here in dublin, and they are moving some jobs back to America, my husband has asked if it would be possible to make the move.

I work for Clinique so could also possibly look at getting a transfer also. His company may be able to sort a visa for me too.

However, I'm absolutely clueless as to what is involved in moving to America, or even what type of Visa's we need. Also we are looking that this will hopefully be a permanent move.

So if we get our visa's - does that mean we're able to stay permanently? Or do we have to apply for green cards then? How long does that take? How long does it take to get a permenant working visa for America?

Please give us some idea as to where we can find out all this information. I tried looking at the US immigration page, but it hasn't really clarified anything for me.

Thanks in advance for any help you give!

His company would have to sponsor him. They could already have Americans lined up for the jobs etc

    thanks for the reply Cena.

Ok, so say his company sponsor him to work permenantly in the US. Does that mean we are automatically entitled to stay there and settle down to live? I think this is the L1 or L2 visa?

Am I able to work if I go as his wife?

If the L1/L2 visa doesnt automatically give us the right to permanently stay there - what is the next step? How many years does that give us before we have to look for a green card?

How hard is it to get a green card once you're there? He's a fully qualified chartered accountant so has the necessary level - he's also multilingual which apparently is hard to get at his level where the job is based.

So - how long does an L1/L2 visa last?
How hard is it to get a green card then?
Am I entitled to work there or do i have to get my own visa? And as a retail worker, how hard would it be for me to get my own visa?

As far as i know you would need your Own visa to work.
I don't know much about the Visas. Someone else would know better than me

L1a/L1b, as his wife you can get an L2

Am I able to work if I go as his wife?
Yes you can, on the said L2

L1 lasts 3 yrs, I believe you can start the GC process pretty quickly

Much easier via an L1, than on some others (like the H1), have a look on the web, there's plenty of info

You'd need a company to sponsor you to have your own visa, which is unlikely, unless in a highly specialised field. Start on an L2.

Thank you so much for the reply spuddy, you've been really helpfull.

My last couple of questions are

    - roughly how long does it take to get an L1 visa?
    - does it take any longer for me to get an L2 visa? We have already lived apart for 4 years and really don't want to be apart for much longer
    - or would we be processed as a couple, as in both done in conjunction with each other?

The L can be pretty quick. A lot of companies have "blanket" petitions that get the visa approved pretty quickly. What will probably happen is the company lawyers will send an extensive questionaire to your husband about his job. The lawyers will put this into legalese and send it to the authorities. They will then tell you to organize the interview at the embassy. You both will attend, and will take both your passports and send them back a few days later with your visas in them.

The L2 is given at the same time, so you can move together. You will not need to do or say much except fill out the ds-160 form and show up to the interview with evidence that you are married (marriage cert etc). When you get to the states, you will need to apply for an EAD (your husband's company will organize it). That will allow you to work - the downside to this is that it takes up to 3 months to process.
