I will be following an 8 week plan beginning on the 24th May for the 24 hrs. Until then I'll just be building some miles and if I feel I'm able, I'll add in some interval and tempo runs to mix it up a little.

I am running this event too, your training seems to be going well and congrats on the result in conn. During your 8 week plan how many runs a week will you do and what mileage per week?

    Hey 40whit,

It will consist of 5-6 days running, peaking at a 126 mile week.
But i'll only be hitting that mileage if the body allows it. I'll be taking the plan one run at a time.
    Good luck in your training.

That's serious mileage, i ran this event in 2013 and preparation was poor, will have to up , my mileage soon too to avoid a repeat.

My wisdom is zero, maxed at about 60 miles per week just ran loads of marathons in preparation but was actually getting unfitter in the build up as I did no tempo or speed work, I just logged easy miles.

Did manage to hit 100 miles on race day but it was a struggle.

Nutrition is very important on race day, you can't just last on sugars etc, proper foods are a must. Eat and drink often and make sure you have a good crew who will be firm with you and make sure of this.

Remember also it is 24 hours and pace is important, tortoise and hare really apt in this.

Most of all though enjoy it, great experience :)

Well done Ed! That's a great run on it's own and all the more impressive given how soon it was after Connemara. Cracking stuff!

    Belfast marathon
    26.2 miles @7:15
    Hr 167
    Splits
    First Half 1:34:25
    Second half 1:35:54
    Finish 3:10:19

My goal was to set out with the 3:15 pacers. Had set my virtual partner at 7:10.(finish 3:07:54)
The pacers went out like lightning and I just stayed back and eased Into it although the watch beeped ahead of v.p. it took about four miles to catch up with them. Sat with the first guy for a mile or so and headed out to the second guy(he was planning a 3:12/3:13) and moved on after another mile or so.

I was very aware of the first half of this marathon which basically climbs until mile 14, around 900ft. But lots of downhill after. I was planning on hitting the half a little slower and running a negative split but found the hills easier this year and couldn't help but push on.

Logged a 6:42 on the down hills but by mile 19 the wind coming along the dual carriage way section and the coast pushed me back to 7:30's for about 3 miles.
Miles 23 @6:42 again and I thought I was back on target.
Found it hard from here to the finish trying too hard to get the pace back.
    Miles 24. 7:31
    25. 7:25
    26. 7:09
    .2. 6:22 pace
This was an 11 min. Pb and I'm very happy with that.
I could have gone for a recover run this evening but I'd probably come back a single man, so I'll leave it til tomorrow.

Oh and thanks for the kind words before and after the race all.

A step back week. Some shin issues also. Physio tomorrow and foot clinic Tues. Fridays run was a chance to practice a strategy for Belfast whilst giving the shin a rest. The bad shin is 100% it's the good shin thats dodgy.

Interesting - are you talking about a run/walk strategy? How did you find it?

I've been reading a lot of blog reports from 24hr races and TFBubendorfer used this particular strategy in the past.

I'd be using a run/walk/stop/sleep strategy myself. ;) Good luck with it!
