    Plans??

    P and d 12 weeks up to 70 miles.
    Just roughly following the plan.

Yesterday's run was my wife's idea. I wasn't confident I could train at that level.
I'll continue to aim towards sub 3 at the moment.

Something to do with tight lower back muscles on the opposite side causing the left side to do most of the work and causing some stress. All good now.

Although I'm not really sure of my current 5k pace I'm pretty sure it's not around the 5:45 or quicker pace but just felt like targeting this pace for my first session of this kind.left the watch in miles which makes for an unusually worded session(can probably program it differently but wasn't arsed).

    Wed 23rd
    15 miles @8:49
Back into the Donegal hills for this.Took a new route and climbed for 3.5miles. The hills took a lot out of me and the last 5 miles or so were pretty messy.

    Hr 132
Nice recovery run and enjoyed the strides at the end.

So I've been enjoying the increased intensity to a degree.Over the past two weeks I've come to realise that a sub 3 this year is off the cards and a sub 3:05 would,on a good day, better reflect my current ability. I'd be happy with that in Dublin.
I should have raced one of the several half marathons that were available, letterkenny,Derry,Belfast to get a more accurate idea but time and money weren't available.
I attempted an 18 mile with 12@pmp a couple of weeks ago but just didn't have the energy to execute it. I feel I'm still in celebratory mode from Belfast and not really taking Dublin as seriously as previous races.
I'm thinking about heading out with the 3:10 pacers for the first mile and take it from there.I'm a slow starter and starting at mp would catch up with me in the end.
Just my current thoughts since the marathon is still 4ish weeks away.

Hi Ed, just wondering why you're thinking sub-3 is not realistic? What's happened in the last couple of weeks to change your mind?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 261 ✭✭Ed Mc

My goals are always on the optimistic side. The past has proved I generally hit a target on the second attempt.
    I believe I could race 20 miles @ pmp (6:50) currently, after that I don't know.
The effort levels during pmp miles have felt more like I'm racing than training.
The training should speak for itself and it just doesn't say sub 3 to me.

Energy and motivation levels have been low the last couple of weeks.
I need to sort out the diet, drink less and get some more sleep if I'm to do myself some justice.

 Jaysus! That's some week but what's the story with the paces ED? You finished yesterday's run in a sub-20 5k and the day before with some hugely quick miles, that's a hell of a lot of intensity to put in on back to back days alone and especially after two 2 20+ mile runs in the week already. What benefit do you see in finishing the runs that quick?

A fair question, not exactly a traditional marathon training week.
All I can say is I ran for enjoyment this week.
The benefits I was looking for had little to do with training effect.

You'll get the love back man! Many people don't talk about it but getting bluesy and losing motivation towards running after putting so much focus on a goal is normal. It's a huge part of your life and buzz in the build-up to these challenges and when it's all over, it can be hard to get going again but it will pass, it always does. Keep the head up!

    Another training block done.
Not only was I lucky enough to get another one done but to hit some descent sessions and come out unscathed is a relief.
I'll be targeting a sub 3 on Monday.

    Why?
Cause my wife told me to.

I'm not confident but what the hell its only running.
I feel like dublin is a bit of a bonus race for me this year ,one I never really expected to give a good lash.
I plan on a sub 1:31 first half and see how I feel.
I'll either push on or hang on(for dear life).
