Quite sure it's a black and white rule as opposed to either team 'letting' the loanee play. Quite sure it came in after someone Newcastle loaned out scored an important goal against them six or seven years back to avoid forcing clubs or players to make a very difficult decision.

I'm not 100% on it but quite sure I remember it happening - mainly to protect the player. Say you're loaned out to another team and performing well, but unsure if you have done enough to warrant them buying you or your parent club calling you back the next year for a proper run in the first team, and near the end of the season score a goal that keeps your parent club our of the CL or gets them relegated (especially if the club you are loaned to goes down), you basically can't go back to your parent club because for the first few months at least even though your teammates would likely understand, you would be a complete villain and pariah to the fans.

RVP and Rooney coming too deep to get the ball. Carrick has not been quick enough with his passing which is slowing our play down. Fellaini needs a calming presence beside him in midfield and he has been average so far today. Januzaj has been very poor so far. Blind just seems to want to come forward and play midfield despite being a centre half today. Valencia is his usual poor self.

Have to say I'm not liking the look of this setup one bit.
