Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. Hi there can anyone tell me if you can upgrade the headlight on a BMW 1100rt pre 2001 model to the newer 1150rt type. I am looking for a 1150rt but there a bit over my budget. I was thinking if I got the older 1100 model and was able to change the headlight it would look a hell of a lot better! Any suggestions pls!

I reckon it wouldn't be worth the hassle.
Fairing different and probably fixings too!
Learn to love the 1100 the way it is!

i have an 1100 think fairing is different. there are auxillary lights on mine so lights are fine. decent enough bike and very reliable.

No, they won't change easily, and if you did get all the bits, not cheaply. It would actually be cheaper to change the bike tbh.....

At this stage, 1100's and 1150's should be nigh-on the same price - if anything, the 1150 is worth less, due to the braking system issues they have - and they will continue to have. Lot's of people converting 1150 brakes to 1100 spec as a result, including no longer having ABS.

I've seen some articles explaining DIY methods for removing the brake servo very cheaply. Maybe no need to be put off by servo problems - if the price is right.
R1150 will have a sixth gear.
AFAIK pre '97 R1100s gave a lot of gearbox problems.

Servo is easily removable/by-passable, so no biggie. But when you do, you lose ABS as well.

6th gear is a bit moot: it's geared stupidly that at 110 kph it's labouring, and if not labouring in 6th you're over the limit.

I had a lot of R11's & R1150's, and never had any gearbox issues, but do bear in mind some 1150's suffered rear final drive issues (leaks and bearings).

The 'oilheads' were only introduced in 1996, so 'pre 97' means sfa bikes. If it's got to 2014 working, it's either not affected, or fixed.

I hanker after going back to an R every now and then, but I think I'd go for an R11. The only real difference of note is the headlight. Easier to just add lights really.

Actually, if I found one, I'd go for an R850RT (smoother) - it was made for certain countries & police iirc.
