    Hi starsx,

I was interviewed on the 21st of December for the Development EO and still haven't heard word back yet. Did you do your interview recently? I'm hoping they put me out of my misery sooner or late. I've no idea where they are in the panel now!

    Well done xECompanyx!

When did you hear? I take it is within commuting distance. I'm in the mid 20s based in the west still waiting to hear word. Hopefully soon!

    The very best of luck.

I am also on the verge of being offered a role. ICT infrastructure in Dublin. I believe they have sent a form to my current boss. I'm sure he will now make a counter offer - I will have to take a pay cut to take the EO ICT role...so I am not so sure with baby in creche etc. At 27k starting, and nearly ten years to reach 40k, it will take a lot of justification. (For those who do not appreciate creche costs, we are paying 931 euros for full-time). The Civil Service is a funny place - PAS was only able to tell me a probable department where I would end up working. It is also bizarre compared to 90% of other jobs, that they wish to speak with your current employer, and in my case this might work against them.

    Hi cogset,
What number were you on the list if you don't mind me asking

I sympathise. Im a current civil servant so I would expect to hit this EO payscale around point 7. Internal/interD promotion is a joke in the CS. Im 9 yrs an acting EO. Promo prospects based on initial aptitude which scewed me for yrs. It became a stigma after a while, felt I could never get high enough for a shot at interview. I generally do well at interview but could never get there for permanency. The one time i did get there, I was successful but it was only a 3 yr contract and I reverted back after that, joke. It took this open comp to give me a shot..

You should have raised the 9 years acting up with your union, there are rules about only allowing someone act up for a maximum of 3 years, after that they must be made full time or revert back.

Sorry, shoukd have explianed myself a little better. Im 18 yrs in the service, 9 of those were acting up. There were breaks in that period. Management are cute. The most I worked consecutively was 3 yrs. A contract of indefinite duration case only kicks in after 4 years

    Hi all,

I was in the mid-20's for inf' in Dublin and have recently started the job. It took a seriously long time but was worth the wait. I am a first time Civil servant and there is no comparison to the private sector. It's a job for life and everyone has a rank (CO, EO, HEO, etc). The ranking system is good as every job is assigned to a rank and does their bit.
So far I would say its worth the very very long wait.

    Best of luck.

Yeah I was in the late teens for Dublin Infrastructure, starting in around 2 weeks. But yeah the time between applying and actually starting is crazy.
I'm pretty sure the application process closed sometime in May last year?
Hell I've got a kid on the way since starting applying :pac:

The kid will not make any difference, you have flexi time here which will be handy

Work Life balance is prioritised in the Civil Service

    Flexi Time
    Multiple Work Sharing patterns
    Parental Leave
    Force Majore etc

Ive just been notified I passed too which is a relief! Wonder how many have been placed in development panel. Surely another 10-20 people would be hired in the next year and a half. But maybe they've met their quota 😣

I was placed in the upper 30's in the Regional panel for ICT Development. Although I have a ICT Degree and have done many courses I am currently working as a Web Developer on a zero hours contract flitting between being on the dole and claiming FIS. In view of these circumstances I am seriously considering pursuing the regular EO position. This will possibly mean giving up ICT but I am not sure if I will be offered the ICT Development in Waterford within the next 18 months so this may be my best bet. Any options are appreciated.

From my basic enough knowledge of the service, there are very little software development roles at any grade outside of the Dublin. The merits of this are arguable, but that is simply the reality.
I would suspect your chances of getting called for this role in the location you are requesting are slim.
I don't there there is any harm in pursuing a regular EO position, then once in, seeing if there are options within whatever dept you are in to get into an IT role - be it Dev or otherwise.

Im an Oracle developer civil servant grade and have worked on shared services projects in the civil service for 18 years.

I agree that most dev roles are in Dublin but there are opportunities regionally or hopefully will be in the near future. Of course it depends on the Dept. An example of such oppertunities are the shared services projects implemented by the government. One common footprint for the majority of Gov departments known as public sector bodys or psbs. The PSSC (Payroll Shared Services) is in full swing and the FMSSC (Financial Management Shared Services) is currently in implementation. The implementation team are8 based in Dublin but once the waves of PSBs start rolling out, this should create opportunities regionally. The 48 PSBs involved are all over the country. Wave 1 of the FMSSC is due to be rolled out early 2018. Read all about it on DPER website.

Indeed, I am aware some of the shared service stuff may result in the decentralisation of a lot of roles - which would be a great thing.
I am not sure will this help the original poster I was answering though - there are a lot of variables at play that are out of their control.
