It really depends what department you get. Where I am the new entrants are sent on training for 3 months and get training from the area they go into as well. Saying that you would be expected to be able to do the majority of the work once the first 6 months are over. Also you are on probation for the first year and can be let go at the end of that time if you are found to be unsuitable so you should give it a lot of thought if you are leaving a job to take it up. Maybe ring hr in the department you get offered and ask them what training they give if any.
    .
Once your are willing to learn and pleasant you will be absolutely find. But if you are late everyday and a lot of sick leave, you are in trouble, your probation will be extended, you will be given every opportunity to make reform and make amends.
    Best of luck

I have a level 8 in softwre and a Masters level 9 in IT, but no experience whatsoever in IT, im being placed in education at the end of the month, Im taking a massive salary cut over 15k, im coming from a completely different background regards work experience, also in 40's in a very insecure industry at the minute. I personally wouldnt be concerned about their expectations or being slow to pick things up as on that salary, the pay is terrible, what do they expect surely we will be monitored and given some kind of training and they were only looking for a level 6 qualification. I'm only taking it for security and after committing years to returning to college I need to show something for it found it difficult to get into the private sector. And in the long run intend to do more competitions for higher grade positions, the poor wages alone is driving me to do that. Wouldnt let it put you off.

Best to get the foot in the door after being in college a few years. Pay can be factor but some people look down on those that do volunteering work and not get paid what ever industry they in IT, education etc. I found it hard to get beyond interviews for IT jobs and applied to civil service in the IT industry in the past and have had to revert back to the normal office jobs in civil service and marketing/admin roles since in the public and private sector.

Education sector is better than nothing really. Give it all you got to get the experience. It can be hard to get the experience for a more than a few months these days or to get anything at all. Is it me or is it getting tougher to get into IT jobs than other jobs despite positions trying to be filled people aren't getting hired unless top notch candidates! Competition is just fierce! Job applications and assessments before and after interviews have become more rigorous. Its hard whether experienced or a graduate with or without experience!

    Best of luck with it!

May I know how to jump from one department to another department for ICT Specialists (Executive Officer level - Civil Service) in Dublin when they arise?

Do I need to apply when the vacancies are listed at Public Jobs website or would I receive internal email / notification regarding the vacancies in another department?

I received an email to say they are shortlisting the pool on the 2nd of March and then interviews for the 9th of March for the Development stream.

For the Infrastructure and Operations Stream, shortlisting on the same date but interviews on the 21st of March.

That's the one. Probably not many positions but I am hoping I get lucky. I am lucky enough to be working with implementing software where the public service makes up a large proportion of our customer base and deal with the end users regularly so hopefully this gives me an advantage if I am luck enough to be picked for an interview.

    Best of luck with it!

Got an email for the development stream to say I would not be called for interview. Haven't heard anything in re to the infrastructure stream which is my preferred choice. Was it the development stream your friend was messaged about.

You wouldn't be called? Oh what basis? I'm surprised at that judging by the fast (ish) tracking to interview I would have thought they'd interview most if not all applicants. Sorry to hear that are you in the private or public sector at present? Yip the development one haven't heard anyone getting anything from infrastructure one and I know of 3 applicants

They were shortlisting candidates based on their application form and although I have a level 9 Ict qualification I have no real life work developmental experience
I have 10 years infrastructure experience however.

Interview on the 14th for the Development stream. Checked at 5.30 on Friday and there was nothing so thought it would be next week before I'd hear, just chanced looking there and I received a mail at 5.45 on Friday to confirm the date and time and what I need to bring.

They're leaving it very late to tell people don't you think? No etray or presentation just interview?

Hi. I got email interview sen dev panel midde of March. Not in cs just wondering about salary. Mentions two, one 43000 other 46000 rising to 58. Do you pay 7.2% pension levy on this and vhi etc etc. Just waying up the cons. Any other benefits that you might get. Pay rises are they yearly or longer.

    Any ideas. Not familiar internals.

That salary range must be the HEO competition. EO starting salary is €27739 and finishes around the €50k mark. Increments are every year for the first 12 years providing you meet the performance criteria. The last two LSI's are 3 and 6 years after the last annual increment.

There are stoppages for pension and pension related levy (PRD). There is no VHI, you look after your own health insurance. Flexi time is probably the best benefit, the ability to work up a day and a half in a four week period and to take that time off in the next four week period.

Is there anything happening at all on this ICT panel? Has anyone been placed off the regional panel..either Dev or INFR.
Its so frustrating. They just seem to form panel after panel....

I know of one guy placed in my job. I think he was 28th on the infra panel.

I was called for interview for the regional dev panel last August. The same week, I got a transfer out of Dublin so I declined the offer of the interview. I had applied for both the dev and inf competitions and selected regional only, as a means of getting out of Dublin. This Friday I received a message from PAS asking if I would be interested in an interview for inf for Dublin. Considering I never opted for Dublin in my application, it would appear they are finding it difficult to fill the roles there.

i was originally told i am in the fifties on panel infrastructure regional, I picked 3 regions on my original application form. I called to see where I stood now (this was end jan) and they could tell me I was no, 7 , 8 and 5 or something on each regional panel. However she did say she didn't know when or IF they would be taking on people inthese regions.

So in other words i am not holding my breath!

Best of luck Crossbeauty, I hope you get called

Shortlisting for the HEO Infrastructure panel out today. They are interviewing the first 21 immediately.

Do you know if they will call anymore than 21? Seems like a small number. Is this for both the interdepartmental & open competition or are they interviewed separately?

  • Registered Users Posts: 162 ✭✭fergald

Hi did interview one week ago. Picked laois kildare. Got 11 on open dev but does not say if this 11 for kildare / laois on message or 11 overall. If 11 for Laois Kildare would imagine not much hope if competing with internal transfers.

Had an interview last month for the HEO Development stream and was placed in the low 30's.
Hoping to get something in Cork.

Has anyone received any offers yet? Would be curious to get an idea of what kind of timeline should be expected for this.

(Don't mean to hijack the EO thread but there doesn't seem to a separate one for HEO)
