I think its scandalous wasting peoples time creating panels ..there should be an onus on departments countrywide to take some ICT EOs. There is a lot of EOs being taken on...but the ICT EO panel seems be be ignored.

a problem is that most Departments only have a part presence in the regions so most Departments could have their main ICT units in Dublin

Well they should have restricted the regions down to these .... say pick Dublin or X Y or Z rather than have tons of applications from all over the country . I know in my regions there is probably a zero IT presence....

Has anyone contacted PAS regarding this panel? Is it now officially defunct?

  • Registered Users Posts: 140 ✭✭crossbeauty

    hi,
No it's not defunct until this august. i was thinking myself of ringing them at some stage over next couple of weeks to see
if any movement. Although I feel I'd be wasting my time!

Yes, might do the same myself. THey have taken on hundreds of EOs so why isn't this panel being humoured at all. Unfair.

The department where I work just got someone off the panel in Wexford. So they are still taking people off it.

And i find this unreal. The Department of Agriculture who i thought would be under the umbrella of PAS have recently advertised for EO ICT developement and infrascture and operations. Something along the same lines anyway of this. 2 streams.

Closing date has been and gone but I would have thought they'd be taking off this panel

Makes you wonder why we want to join this juggernaut ?

The salary is a pathetic 29K for EO ICT. This might fit a recent graduate with little experience. I wonder who is deciding these salaries. The private sector IT salaries are rapidly going up as the recession is over. Also they offer benefits like Health Insurance, Company Shares, Life Insurance, Pension etc etc. So public sector ICT sector doesnt stand a chance in competition.

You are right , yet these staff are needed in pub sec. They need to move away from treating ICT as a clerical grade that anyone is capable of doing and move toward a new technical grading system for experienced staff in areas such as ICT so that they have a chance of attracting and retaining staff . For most the trade off is taking a.lower salary for the "perks" of Flexi , holidays , career, pension , but that will only go so far . Another option would be to allow flexibility in what point on the scale you start at as an experienced ICT person . A CO doing photocopying for 10 years will be on 7/8 k more than that EO in ICT. Even DL co council have there current "helpdesk" roles at gr v level starting at 41k a job which would be on a par with the EO ICT .

Have you ever seen "Ireland's Best Workplaces 2018". The same criteria applies here. Hope this helps.

Totally irrelevant to the question you've asked to be completely honest.

I’ve not worked in all so can’t say

Plus the offer you get will only be for 1 Dept, you don’t get a choice

I was asked on the phone which dept I would like to work. Since I was working I told to send an email so that I can make a decision.

My choice would be either Revenue or DFA.

    Any inputs welcome.

    Thanks...

Just wondering when did you do the interview ?? Is it the Dublin or regional panel . It's just I am on a panel for same since Aug 2016 and there has been no movement on it. Thank you

I was told that Revenue, Social Protection & to an extent Agriculture are doing lots of exciting things with I.T. Haven't heard anything about the DFA.

  • Registered Users Posts: 115 ✭✭MaxPayneXL

I did the interview late Jan. Unlike the last EO-ICT interview which was held at PublicJobs office, this time it was done at Dept of Agriculture.

Yes I did that one too and got placed on the 2 panels infrastructure and developments .... would be great if there was some movement . I'm not in Dublin though which is where they said most of the jobs were

What number were you in panel MaxPayneXL? I'm number 21. So they asked you which dept you'd prefer? Cool! Not sure which one I'd pick. Depends on location perhaps. I'd say Revenue & SP would be very busy.

  • Registered Users Posts: 115 ✭✭MaxPayneXL

    I am in top five.

I also think the same regarding work load at revenue.

  • Registered Users Posts: 82 ✭✭emermc

Where are the offices of the DFA? I am sure you will get flexitime in all the departments and you won't have to work beyond the normal number of hours, 37.5 hours. Revenue is off Georges Street I think.

If you could talk to someone in IT in each of the depts. that would give you a good idea. I wonder is that possible. Are you coming from the private sector?

    I am from private sector.

I tried that but the response was not helpful. The IT manager of the dept I called was not willing to disclose what location I would be posted.

  • Registered Users Posts: 82 ✭✭emermc

Oh that is annoying. I think it is probably because they don't know. It is hard to make a big decision like this with very little information. You don't know where you'll be based nor the technologies you'll be using. At least they are giving you the choice of departments. Did you get the call yesterday?

Just to add, most of IT for Revenue is in Stephens St. just off georges street I have heard & they are using things like SharePoint & javascript. Probably lots of other things too.
