Rubbish tyres on the majority of cars

My experience of Kormoran is that they are cheap, grip well but don't wear well.
I had set of Riken Maystorm 2 B2. They both (Kormoran and Riken) are brands owned by Michelin.
Riken provided really good grip, but came with low tread when new (only 6mm) and wore down really quickly. I wore a set in 13k km (8k miles).

I remember I used to use eagle f1s. Things stuck to the road like train tracks. Costing me too much, so went for a different wet of Falkens. Did a load of research on them first!

I know someone who had the back step out on their car while pulling onto a roundabout about 2 weeks ago, putting them into at 270 degree spin, leaving them on the opposite side of the road after it caught grip again with the opposite lock. It could have be a head on collision. The car had Wanli tyres.

Id be an advocate of good tyres and in the wet the difference between good and crap tyres can be huge. I buy over the internet. Ive Fulda Somethings? on the back and Falken ZE712s on the front and im happy with them. Not top of the range but still pretty good. Eagle F1s were the grippiest I ever had but very soft and they were eaten in no time. The Toyo Proxes T1Rs were the best all rounders I found when you include cost.

I noticed alot of garda cars have the Continental premium contacts which I found to be a good tyre also.

Ive 2 new Cooper CS2s in the shed for the front. 65 quid each over the web (205/15/60) and they get a C rating for wet grip and fuel efficiency. I think the scale goes down to G so not bad value it looks like.

The tyre company near my workplace has quoted me €130 per corner to fit Avon ZV5 tyres and do the balancing (205/50 R17).

Decent tyre? The quote I got, a bit high? (I would prefer to buy them in a garage rather than online)

They're €103 online, so you could save about €65 by ordering online and getting a local place to fit. Might be worth seeing if they'll come down to €115 per corner.

They're a decent tyre but have been out for donkeys years now.

It's worth remembering that these are self assessed. Basically, anyone could start a tyre company, get a tyre to a minimum standard and then give all A's...

Coopers are relatively well known in America and are trying to break into the European market in a big way so we may see some better stuff coming from them in the next few years.

My pickup originally came with Goodyear wranglers, terrible tyres, no grip in the wet.
So I did a bit of research and went for Cooper discoverys, had to go to the UK to get them but well worth it.

Yeah the F1s are excellent although they do wear quite quickly relative to others. Falkens are decent too.

My preference is for Michelin Pilot Super Sports.

Interesting. I wasnt aware of the self assessed bit. Reviews online seemed positive. Ill fit them in the next few weeks and see how they go.

Best place to buy tyres online these days?

I need a set of 4 Michelin Pilot Super Sports and the price difference in some places is insane!

It has crossed my mind to get a lesser cheaper brand but for the saving of 2 tanks of fuel its not worth it in the long run.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 853 ✭✭✭edburg

Either would be a good choice but if you are paying Continental money you should price Goodyear eagles F1's they are superior to both and a tyre really suited to the likes of the OPC.

Found my OPC struggled on the original conti sport contacts that came with car. Got very nervous once in damp conditions.

Been using Yokohama Perada spec-2 for years now feel there on button. But mainly only using car in decent months these days.

Thinking of Vredstein Ultrac Vorti's as an alternative, get some good reviews here w w w .tyrereviews.co.uk/Tyre/Vredestein/Ultrac-Vorti.htm and from different guys over that have used them. Save a few bob each corner to once look around.

I can't comment on the Avon's as I've never had a set, but I also have 205/50/17 and find that there is a bit less choice in this size and price can be a little high to similar sized tyres.

Just for comparison purposes I got 2 Michelin Pilot Sport 3 fitted and balanced in Jan/Feb this year for €145 each. They seem to be wearing a little quicker than the Vredestein Ultrac Cento I had on the same axle previous, but I expected as much being more of a 'sport' tyre compared to a touring tyre.

Next time around I think I will try Goodyear EfficientGrip Performance which back in Jan/Feb were also €145 in the same tyre shop as i got the Michelin PS3.

I have the same size (Mazda 5). Was planning to replace my conti sportscontact3's with conti sportscontact5's. Is there a better option? Noise is a bit of a problem (can't hear the radio at motorway speeds) but otherwise I've had no complaints about the current set (I would have liked fewer punctures but can't blame the tires if tacks get into them).

You should check out Tyre Reviews which give user reviews of tyres by brand/size/car etc. On it I have quickly read a few reviews which agree with you that the SportContact3 are noisy. A lot seem to say that the wear rate on the SportContact5 can be quick.

I would prefer to have Continental tyres if price wasn't a factor, but they are a bit beyond what I would comfortably like to pay. I was quoted €180 a corner last time I priced a set a couple of years ago.

You should check out that website and compare to see what suits you best.

I can't fault the Michelin PS3, they are fitted to the rear of a 320d and the traction control light is rarely seen flashing. I do like what I read about Goodyear EfficientGrip Performance so that is why I would like to try them next, although I would have no hesitation with PS3 either.

I don't do really big miles and am hardly ever on the motorway so wear rate and noise aren't big factors for me.

You need to add a minimum of 10er a corner to that price though and most likely 15 which makes the prices much closer. Think eagle f1's were 103 a corner online (so minimum 113 fitted) I paid 130 and the place I bought them also did the alignment (another 30 euro but you need to add that to the cost of online tyres too) which they guarantee for the life of the tyres on tyres they sell.

In other words I can get the alignment done for free anytime I want (saving 30 euro a pop at least) and I usually get it done twice a year so I'll save in the long run buying here and save all the hassle.

Any thoughts on Dunlop Sport Maxx? Got them last year about €140 each and have found them good for noise, grip and stopping but open to similar alternatives when it comes time to replacing.

Some of the replies on this thread make me realise why I'm so careful to keep my distance from other road users. If the comparison video doesn't change their minds then nothing will. I paid €950 for 4 Contis for one of my cars, a bargain to ensure traction. Even on my W124 I've got 4 Pirellis and it's certainly not a sports car. It's an idiot debate, if you can't afford proper rubber then walk

No, the additive package is the difference, some have more silica , different oils etc.
Rubber is only the base product.
So more or less silica is better?

Nowhere near as simple as that I am afraid.
Tyre tech depends on a multitude of factors they keep all their formulations and new tech for the racetrack or new tyres.
I have seen tyre companies send their guys out to sweep up rubber off tracks that was left after a burnout.
Thats how serious they take it.
Easy for consumers now though, define your budget, choose what type of tyre you want: Winter/Summer/All season.
Pick your size and then check the tests.
    Easy!

That's probably one of the most common sizes you can have you'd get decent tyres like bridgestones or Goodyears for around 90 euro a corner. Are the kingstars much cheaper there crap either way you could get worse but putting them beside a Bridgestone etc they'd be fairly inferior I wouldn't even consider them a budget tyre there a lot below that really.

Anyone any experience with Nokian Zlines ?

Gonna go with either them or Goodyear F1s based on

    http://www.tyrereviews.co.uk/Tyre-Size/18-Inch-Tyres/245-45-18-Tyres.htm

For a difference of ~25euro a tyre should just go with F1s ?

Had the dunlop sport maxx was impressed with wet grip expecially but wore out fairly quick, they are about €75 on oponeo now. I got dunlop sport blueresponse recently, 205/55/16/91W only 2 on the back of an A4 quattro, very impressed so far, tyre of the year from auto express, i got them for €68 each on oponeo. Having a mate with a tyre fitting machine and balancer makes buying tyres online a doddle!

Last time I picked up new tyres for my 307, not sure of size to be honest, I'm guessing 15-16", my local tyre centre gave me 4 goodyears for €64 a corner.

I'm not big into cars and know next to nothing about tyres, but even I know that the part of your car that makes it grip the ground is surely important. Why bother risking your safety for the sake of saving probably less than €10-15 per tyre?

Going to be calling to a few tyre places over the weekend, the roads were icy in patches here this morning and was looking to get All Season tyres this time. Best options from reading here are the Nokian All Weather+ and Goodyear All Weather or any others recommended? Thanks.

Nokian make very good tyres, until this winter I had them on both sets of wheels for two cars.
Nokian H for summer and WRG2 for winter, these are older models now because of the two sets of tyres but the H are still a very good tyre.
For this time of year, I would be using All seasons or Winters not Summer tyres, enough evidence to show they make a difference and IMHO, Winters are worth the money/hassle over summers right now.

I put 4 bridgstone tyres on my 17 year old Civic Coupe a few weeks ago. The tyres are worth probably more then the car to be honest but the compound is softer so the car is not slipping and sliding anymore. I also put two new bridgestones on the front of my Skoda Octavia and in the wet the drive wheels don't slip at all.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,257 ✭✭✭chicorytip

Forgive my ignorance but how can any tyre on the market be regarded as unsafe or "rubbish"? Are there not basic standards or regulations that all manufacturers must conform to?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,362 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

Meeting basic standard does not automatically mean they are good so all standard of tyres should not be bunched as being equal.

To put another analogy on it, a cheap TV may meet the basic standards of displaying a picture and having sound. Still doesn't mean the quality of picture or sound from it is any good. Same goes with smart phones. Funny thing is that most people can relate to the difference in quality and functionality between a cheap TV/smart phone and a more expensive one, yet to them things like tyres with can actually save your life all fall under the same bucket in that they all do the same thing.

Rainsport 3's from Uniroyal, were fine on Volvo. Triangles on it before were borderline dangerous.

Known for their slightly soft sidewalls the Rainsports but not a problem if you dont run along kerbs for fun.

Goodyear F1's for example which are an amazing tyre.

So been lookin at this thread since it started and well i had a recent puncture and then checked the rest of my tyres, looks like they all need changing anyone got a good recommendation for a clio 1.2 155/55/R15 dont really have a budget but dont want to spend my life savings as ill most likely be selling the car soon but the tyres need to be changed!

Been quoted 65 a corner for hankooks same for nangkans and 120 a corner for bridgestones in local places am willing to go online for em.

Am I better with all weather tyres or pretty good summer ones I cant see a point in winter tyres here to be honest and i dont really want 2 sets for a car i plan to sell soon.

    Cheers

120 a corner for 15" tyres of any brand is a rip off.

Summer tyres are perfect for Ireland.

Those Hankooks seem a reasonable price.

Get some prices on line on oponeo.ie to compare the prices you're getting locally. Factor is 10/15 a wheel for fitting and balancing

Summer tyres are perfect for Sicily, they may be or may not be regarded as adequate for Ireland.

And if you do get Bridgestones get the A001 which is not much more expensive than the Turanzas, but better for the next 3 months anyway.
