Proctologist

Can anyone recommend a doctor/clinic that specialises in proctology? It's for a long term condition but money is a big issue. A GP will undoubtedly just refer me to a specialist.

I suppose my question is - is it possible to see a specialist without having to go through a GP ? I won't be able to afford to see the specialist if I have to pay €60 to a GP for a referral first.
Hmm, maybe I should apply to embarrasing bodies!

I don't see any way around the GP unless you it is an emergency and you go to the Accident and Emergency dept. And unless you're dying and carted in by ambulance you'll need a gp referral to avoid the charge there.

The GP can refer you to a specialist on the public system, by the time that appointment comes around you'll have saved another few 60 Euros (waiting times can literally be years). I see a GI specialist and couldn't make my clinic appointment in October, the rescheduled appointment was February (in fairness they'd see me sooner if i had an emergency).
So Even though it might take ages it is worth getting your name on the list.

The alternative is if you have private insurance and get referred to a private specialist (probably the same guy in the public system) quicker and costing your insurance company.

Usually specialists cost megabucks so the 60 quid probably ain't gonna cover it.

If is an emergency you go the A&E route bring supplies. you could be there for ages.

Thanks for the reply and info. I guess it's off to the GP.

Anyone know of a Dublin based GP with a special interest in this area ?

Unless you are prepared to suffer you problem for MINIMUM one year, I'm afraid you'll just have to suck it up and pay the money. I won't repeat what the last poster said but a visit to a&e will have you waiting hours and you will probably just be given an outpatient appointment for a later date.
Its up to you if you wait and see a consultant publicly, or pay to be seen private much more quickly.
Either way you need to see your GP though.

Yeah - I should have mentioned that A&E can be torture; Last time I was there I was in a bad way- specialist had sent a fax to the A&E to say I needed to be admitted immediately, and I still spent around 24 hours in A&E, part of it in a chair, on a drip, before I got to a trolley, and finally to a ward. The overnight bit was a nightmare with all the drunks and the crazies, and a guy flanked by two coppers who was apparently a drug mule full of cocaine condoms (while it's slightly off topic I have to praise the staff in Beaumont A&E - they are amazing)
