Just came across this. A good score can add so much more to a program

Tom Turgoose (Shaun) I think had one line in 20mins of brilliance and you can see tears washing his face. Superb piece by all!

Agreed. I've heard him getting a bit of stick (not much, though) but it reminds me of something I heard which is that acting isn't just about acting, it's also about reacting, and Turgoose's reactions in that scene were spot on. You really feel like you're in his place watching that scene.

Shane Meadows never fails when it comes to the soundtrack to his shows/movies. Amazing.

Harvey just randomly popped into my head there. His violent outburst towards Gadget in episode 2 is interesting when you think about it, as it's the first time since the film that we saw signs of the old Harvey, the bully.

It showed his Dad beating him in 86, I think that was to put some context on his bullying behaviour in 83, the classic kid getting **** at home and then lashing out at kids smaller than him at school. He still obviously has a bit of a temper but he's worked on it and doesn't lose it too often. He was very remorseful not long after the outburst at Gadget in the car, full of apologies.

What was I thinking?! I watched this episode to sort of "wind down" before bed and I get *that* dinner scene. Probably the most emotionally devastating scenes that I've seen this year - the sort that you want to end and simultaneously, due to the sheer quality, don't want to. Folks: Let's remember this scene when it comes time to nominate in next year's TV awards!

Season has been getting rapidly darker and cannot see a happy ending at all.

For those who feel nothing's happened, I can only assume they haven't been watching the film or previous seasons because they all had a similar structure. It's about the characters, their situations, their reactions. Superb acting, directing and dialogue with a feeling of reality that few shows can muster.

felt it dragged a little after the dinner scene to be honest. still good though... although there are those who need to curb their enthusiasm towards it, as its very good but does have its faults.
still looking forward to the final ep.

I didn't think the dinner scene was as great as everyone else here seems to. I'm not sure why but I found myself getting irritated like the actors were being self indulgent or something, well Woody and Lol anyway. I'm a weeper usually buy just found myself wishing the scene would end. The milky stuff was good but Woody and Lol did my head in.. In that scene anyway, and I usually love those two.
Maybe it was just the idea of sitting the fam down to Sunday dinner to tell them you murdered their rapist father felt a bit too far fetched.

Well, they say you take bad news better on a full stomach...

But really I don't think there is any good place or time to drop that bombshell.

there was rumors of a surprise guest next week. Jack O'Connell was mentioned, as he was in the movie. Possibly that's who Milky could have been talking to !

It looks like Milky is planning to have Combo killed or beaten up by the sound of that phone call

at the end of the phone call didn't he say "I love you too" ? He'd hardly say that to a hitperson?

No, I'd say he's going to 'ave a go 'imself :)

Depends on your perspective really. To me, it sounded though something was going to happen that night but that Milky didn't want 'it' done then. Whatever 'it' is, it doesn't sound like Milky really has any control over it because whomever he was speaking to seemed eager to get it done and Milky seemed to be struggling to stay in control of whatever is going on. He also made reference to his daughter being out of the house and safe with him. I think they're going to go after Combo in the house, which would also explain why he wanted his daughter out of the house.

Obviously he wouldn't want his child in a house with a racist but I think there's more to it than that. It'd be interesting if Woody or Lol got killed by accident if there was an attack on the house, after all, it's not like Combo is likely to be out and about much. All the happy family and engagement business makes me feel like Woody's gonna get killed. It'd be ironic if Combo saved Lol, only for Woody to die because she's trying to save Combo.

All possible of course, but Milky shadow boxing makes it look to me like he's going to try and rough Combo up himself, although I think Milky is too nice a person to go through with it

Can't remember what the song at end was but pretty sure I heard some Clint Mansell at some stage

Was it an instrumental piano version of famous song or something..

It sounds like Stephen Fretwell to me, but not a song I know.

I googled the lyrics i could remember and best result was a script of the episode.

Will try the subtitles trick later and see if it says anything.

I just watched the finale trailer there and they said that it'll be feature length. Great news!

It has been fun to watch so far but not as meaty as the '86 series. I'm not hear to be a moaning michael but I was disappointed with '88 and although entertaining so far, this '90 series has fallen a bit flat for me. I'm expecting a lot from the finale though, they've certainly set it up well.

That third episode contained some of the tensest TV I've ever seen.

By the way, does anyone know why Shaun was invited around for the big revelation? I've seen the movie and all the previous seasons but I'm still not sure what he was doing there. I seem to remember him having a relationship with Combo at one stage, but is that it?

I'm think someone previously mentioned that the episodes are repeated in Wednesdays. Is this correct does anyone know?
I've checked TV guide and I don't see it listed . I don't have Sky do can't check that way.
    Thanks

Probably because he saw Combo beat up Milky.

Apologies, "promo" would have been a better term to use. It doesn't show any footage from the upcoming episode but it does say that the episode is feature length. It's on Channel Four's Youtube channel.

Thinking about unpredictable endings........has Combo actually changed? Will he revert to the racist skinhead before the end with tragic consequences?

I think this is the first time I've ever been properly excited and anxious about a TV programme. Counting down the hours till Sunday. My wife reckons it will be dark and tragic and doesn't want to watch it, she wants me to watch it and tell her what happens.

I'm more wondering why Gadget (and maybe Harvey) weren't invited. As it stands now, they're getting Kelly's side of the story more than anything. At least if they were at the dinner, there'd be more opportunity to make their mind up about the whole affair.

I also do think that Combo has genuinely changed. Unfeeling sociopaths don't take the rap for murders they didn't commit, unless they're in a gang or something.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,186 ✭✭✭✭Ash.J.Williams

It makes sense to me that young people that were close 2 years ago are not so close anymore....and also the gang in the kitchen scene were directly involved in the mick situation! Gadget and Harvey don't have jobs or kids either and prefer the oul hot knives and yokes.

Ah, but we musn't forget that Combo has always been in love with Lol.;) It's very tempting for us all to assume that Combo is a reformed character when all we've really seen is the speech he made to the parole board, which may well just have been a lie, and of course he took the blame for Lol because he loves her. It'll be interesting to see how it plays out. One things seems certain though, no happy ending.:(

We did see him praying on his own in his prison cell. I doubt it's an act. Although in a way it's a pity, he makes a good psycho.

I think Combo regretted what he done to Milky instantly after the fact. He actually protected Milky from the other two by glassing one of them.

Combo turned on him in the film as well, it's a possibility. Would Milky really be saying he loved him down the phone to him though? It wasn't even a 'I love you, man' sort of thing but that whole conversation was very odd......

Ah, but there's praying and there's praying:D I don't know, I'm not convinced he's a reformed character. It's amazing how many criminals 'find Jesus' in prison, the parole board lapped it up anyway. I wonder if they're planning to put a twist where Milky turns out to be Combo's half-brother? Now that would be a shocker.

  • Registered Users Posts: 232 ✭✭Big Game

Ah, I think there's no doubt he's changed or at least tried to. He looks a broken man and has done since 86, he pleaded with Lol to let him take the rap because he wanted to do 'something good', he's been shown to have embraced an improvement agenda in prison, did his exams, keep his nose clean etc. Big difference from when him and Banjo were inside the previous time. The attack on Milky was as much about jealousy towards Milky's tight knit family and loving upbringing in comparison to Combo's broken home as it was about race. How he might react when he's pushed into a corner is the crux on Sunday.
