Castrol have a oil selector which is useful:

Is the low oil light on?

Go to whichoil.ie and put in your reg. It will tell you what spec oil you need.

Has your oil light come on?

    thanks for that

oil light hasn't come on but getting a kind of high pitched rattle (hard to describe) this morning and a google suggests it could be low oil.

Buy a litre of oil on your way home just in case. Always good good to have anyway.
Check the oil about 5 mins after you shut the engine off. Wipe the dipstick and dip it again get the level. Top up a small amount at a time checking the dipstick for the level.

Be careful, too much oil is as bad as too little. (hope that last bit doesn't sound patronising!)

If you hear a rattle it could be too late my friend.

That's a hell of a diagnosis, my friend. My car has a rattle too. What do you think is up with it? Or should I just scrap it now?

It was not supposed to be a diagnosis to start with. A rattle associated with oil level is not something one can normally mend with adding oil. Simple. If that is the case the damage is already done.

If it wasn't a diagnosis what was it?
