Years a go there use to be two donkeys (Salt and Pepper) near the railway bridge in Malahide. I remember when I was a kid they were a great attraction but they just disappeared around 2001 I think. They did seem pretty old but I often wonder did they just die or where they moved?

If the latter I wonder why they did not replace them. Pity.

EDIT: Jesus I just found out. Bloody hell. Ok it's made me a little bit angry. *composing myself*

    So,what happened to them??

As far as I remember a local drunken youth put an iron bar through one of the donkeys eyes, killing it and the other one was sent to a donkey sanctuary.

The cruelness of people never ceases to amaze.

Then I read another article saying the whole sentence was suspended a few months later.

No I just remember these two donkeys because they use to come right up to people on main road.

He was released shortly afterwards (Two weeks I believe), and was drunk driving with four passengers in a car. He drove it into the "Some Love It Hot" in Fairview and did some serious damage. AFAIK one passenger broke his back, another broke both his legs, not sure about the other, and he was fit enough to run away. Caught later though.
I have no idea what happened after that. Never heard of a court case or anything else.
Another man was blamed for the Donkey initially, and (afaik) received death threats, and was even named in a local flyer or bulletin or something. He had nothing to do with it, and was found dead a few years later (I was told suicide, but there was some weird circumstances..)

The other Donkey "Pepper" was sent to a Donkey Sanctuary in Cork and was allegedly afraid of men when he was first moved there.

I remember reading about it at the time, and was living near there. There was quite a lot of anger locally, and iirc a local old man found the Donkey at 5 or 6 in the morning and suffered quite a shock himself.

The Fry Model Railway, that was in the Malahide Castle (where the Avoca tearooms/cafe are/is now) is being rehoused in the Casino. Apparently it was confirmed at Christmas. Also rumour has it, Two Donkeys and the land shall be returned to their original (or as close to) condition.

Good. It looks like a s**thole at the minute.

My dad John lynch was the gardener that found the donkey that Saturday morning he worked for the kirkers for 25 years. My dad us to bring my brother and myself to feed the donkeys salt and pepper every Saturday we loved them. Until one morning my dad found salt on the ground with a iron bar drove through his eye into his skull. The poor thing he had been brutally murdered by a youth who only got two years in jail after. It was so sad. My dad went down to the house and told Mr and Mrs kirker to remember him the way he was. It was shocking. Pepper was in a awful state after all the were 32 years together at the casino malahide.he was sent to a sanctuary in Cork.
