Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

He's the second owner in Ireland and its a UK import so the third owner, but possible the first owner bought it brand new and imported it then. He sold it to Graham the guy selling it now and bought an RS3. It's a bit too heavily modded for me but no doubting it's a very quick car with a lot of money spent on it.

It's the Golf GTI/R thread so the recommendation would be none of the above get a GTI or R instead.
What ever you don't get an R line, it's a mutant that should be banned. If you like the R line get an R so you won't be embarrassed if any of us pull up beside you.

Embarrassed! Noted! Good sound advice drunken monkey. Il let the rest of them get back to talking about Seats

In fairness those Seats are a lot more relevant than an R line here...
If you told us how much you want to spend you'd get a good few recommendation for a hot hatch.

Why would he be embarrassed? R line is basically M sport or S line, even though they ain't high performance cars. Not everyone can afford a GTI or R but still want a sporty looking golf.

It depends on your driving. If you're not doing big mileage each year or hour long drives to work each way then go with petrol. Let us know what sort of driving you do, if it's frequent short trips to the shops or school runs etc.

The Style has better spec than the R-Line and has pretty much everything you'll need, just add on a few bits like the Winter Pack. Golfs are nice looking cars, I'd rather more spec than sporty bumpers but it's personal preference.

Is there a bit more room in the budget for a DSG auto? They're a fantastic drive, very smooth. If you go with petrol you get a mild hybrid with the DSG, reviews say the mild hybrid does actually save you a bit of fuel so it's not entirely an emissions gimmick.

Try get the service pack thrown in or at least half price, that will cover your first 3 services.

This thread focuses on the performance Golfs but everyone here is very knowledgeable about the Golf family so lots of useful advice here that would apply to the normal Golfs. Spec, tyres, maintenance etc.

Do you know it, looks like he hasn't had it long. George should know it looks like they done the servicing...
Is it a 2/3 second car...can't be miles off it..

He’s been doing a lot of over-sharing of his exploits in that car on Facebook.

Whether that makes it a dodgy purpose I’m not sure. On the flip side, he’s spent the lockdown washing and waxing it. It’s well minded and he’s spent a fortune on performance parts. If you know what you’re looking for it mightn’t be that bad a purchase at all. I’d be mainly concerned re warranty due to the modding, but mods can be removed.

I wouldnt be embarrassed pulling up next to you in an R-Line I can tell you that. You're not Paul Walker and I'm not Vin Diesel.

You do forever see R owners getting butt hurt over R-Line cars. You never see it as said already with M owners and M Sport cars or Audi S owners and S-Line cars.

What's wrong with a man wanting a sporty looking Golf with a regular engine that he should be embarrassed.

Yes, it's the performance Golf thread but there's hundreds of pages of Mk7 knowledge here, can we not help a fella out? If the conversation was in the office canteen you wouldnt act like that, "I dont assist inferior Golf owners".

    Some joke in all fairness.

Of course we can help a fella out, I'm the only one that tried helping him out of an R line..he wouldn't be the first to stumbled in here with dreams of a tdi and screech out in something completely different.

It’s like me (a bloke) walking around in a dress.

If that’s what you want to do, no problem with it. Not really a comparison with driving a car whose external appearance belies its modest performance. That’s more like a plumber wearing a tuxedo to work rather than cross-dressing.

I'll never understand how people drive such heavily modded expensive cars over here and get insured. Are people really chancing their arm and not declaring them and then posting all over facebook about them, or are there companies that'll cover you driving a Stage 3 R like that? Surely the loadings are eye watering?

Incase it's relevant l'm female. I regularly come to boards to read up reviews/advice. My bf is useless when it comes to cars I just wanted a 2nd/3rd opinion from knowledgeable people.
Thanks to those who offered advice.
I decided to park the idea for a few months to see how the dust settles.
I drove both the part hybrid engine golf and the dsg auto. I loved the dsg. I think because iv always drove diesel im programmed to consider it more.
Anyway! Won't intrude any more drunken monkey!

@Rmgblue Sorry that you were made to feel unwelcome, I'm sure most people in this forum would be happy to help you out. Perhaps if you share what mileage you do per annum and what type of driving (motorway, urban, mixed) you mostly do, we would be better able to advise.

I started off with a GT golf 170tsi. I'm now in my second GTI and hoping to move up to R soon ( if I manage to stay employed and survive through all this pandemic crap ☹️). Buy what makes you happy. Golfs are superb cars IMO in every guise. It's what suits YOU. Let us know what decide whenever that time comes ðŸ‘

That wasn't my intention. You suggest someone gets an R or GTI in the GTI/R thread and everyone loses their mind.

  • Registered Users Posts: 592 ✭✭✭theintern

Car enthusiasts in general have a bit of a bee in their bonnet about the whole R Line, M Sport packages. It's basically because at least some part of most car enthusiasts enjoys it when people notice that they have a powerful car. These packages make it pretty tricky for a non educated person to tell if it's 'just' a 1.6L TDI, or a 300bhp 4WD monster, and this makes the powerful cars less special. I'd be lying if I said that one of the reasons I like the GTI and amn't so keen on the R is because the GTI is a bit more showy than the R is.

All that said, I reckon the posts above were mostly made in a good natured way, the usual posters to this thread are generally extremely positive and helpful.

At the end of the day, an R Line Golf is objectively a better looking car than a standard model, and if I was buying a non GTI/R Golf, I'd be going for an R-Line.

If you're looking at a diesel, if it suits your driving mileage (a good rule of thumb is you don't really need one unless you're doing more than 25,000km a year), then the 2.0L Golf is a much much nicer engine than the 1.6 and it's worth test driving one. I really liked mine when I had one.

No one is losing their mind. It comes across pretty shítty though when you are slating non performance models. People that post in a motoring forum are likely to take a bit of pride/interest in their car so best to be mindful of that.

Diesel v Petrol really comes down to your usage. If you’re sub 15k kms a year (maybe even 20k a year), then I’d suggest going with the Petrol. It’ll be a bit nicer to drive, quieter, and there won’t be much in it in terms of running costs.

DSG is a great option too, it makes the car very complete, a great daily driver, so easy to get along with as the other tech in the car (auto parking brake and radar cruise) work really well with DSG.

The R-Line does make a big difference to the appearance and desirability of the car, it would definitely be the spec I’d choose (outside of the performance models). It would be a smart looking car, it really lifts the looks of them, the MK7 certainly.

I think it would hold its value better and be more desirable on the used market too (similar to how Bmw m-Sport, Audi S Lines are much more desirable than their “SE” equivalents).

I'm sticking to my guns and saying check out an R/GTI instead of an R line while waiting. A test drive won't hurt anyone except maybe scare the boyfriend.
I've only spotted one girl driving an R, think it was a 191 D, I thought how cool is she. You'll get a lot kudos in here that's one thing for sure regardless of what some might say.

Assuming this couple is looking at a new car, there’s a near ~20k difference between an R and an R-Line. The 2 cars are serving completely different markets and budgets. Sure, she could go back 2-3 years and buy a used R, but that’s not for everyone.

That kind of kudos costs big bucks.

I couldn't sleep right at night knowing we sent her off without at least trying to get her into something a little more sporty seen as she was good enough to drop in for advice.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,917 ✭✭✭✭Toyotafanboi

I'd agree with the above. An R is a specialist car, higher purchase price, higher maintainance costs, higher fuel bills and around 3 times as powerful as the 1.0 petrol or 1.6 diesel and would kill you in the blink of an eye :pac:

I think it'd almost be unfair to suggest one to someone who isn't specifically into one.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,340 ✭✭✭✭drunkmonkey

Ah here we've moved from pride in your R line to the R is a killer. I'll giver her the benefit of the doubt and say she might actually like the extra torque of a GTI/R after being used to a turbo diesel.
Service costs aren't high and with 15/20k fuel bills won't be crazy. They also mentioned driving a GTE DSG and liked it.
It's unfair to assume she can't handle it or won't like it.

I hope she test drives a GTI or R and falls in love...

Looking at importing a Cupra 290 ST at the moment. With the travel restriction it's basically buying blind with an inspection. Found the car in the spec I want, low miles, great nick etc but it's a manual. I had been contemplating a weekend car anyway in manual form but I'm looking at the Cupra as a car to do both.

I like auto but it isn't totally essential, but anyone with a manual GTI/R or the like have any thoughts?

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,381 ✭✭✭vintagevrs

Nice one, and nice choice. I previously owned a DSG R, and there is no arguing that it is rapid at flicking through the gears, and for the first few weeks it was great as I enjoyed the novelty of the speed and acceleration. Having said that, if I was going quick petrol again, I'm nearly sure I would go manual. Even though it may be slower on paper, I think it would be more fun to drive.

Each situation is different though. If 90% of time is sitting in a city in traffic then auto prob, but other than that id go manual. I'll also buy it when you're finished with it! :)

My commute is about 25km most of the time but the last 8k or so are fast country roads. I'm kinda missing the interaction of a manual tbh.

DSG pops and bangs though :D

There's an F10 that doesn't really get any use most of the working week anyway if I wanted some comfort.

I have a manual R since December and I'm really enjoying it. Sounds like I've a similar commute to you, I rarely do any city driving. For long spins on the motorway the ACC works brilliant. I wouldn't let manual put you off, only downside is they are known to be hard on clutches but an uprated clutch is about €1,000 fitted, not a massive cost and cheaper than a DSG gearbox replacement if it goes wrong:D

And I would have been very interested. My problem is (and once this lockdown lifts) is fitting a hyper dog and baby with all their gear in the car at once has me leaning towards a wagon of some variety is the handiest. Trust me...if it was me a couple of years ago I'd have your car sitting outside.

Thats the Ad i posted up in Feb before all this kicked off, needs to be updated - mileage is gone up a little plus it's just had 4 new Asymmetric 5's fitted, hand an oil/filter change and a haldex service. Also had the Revo torque mount replaced as i got one that was part of a faulty batch.

How'd you know it was faulty tossy, I'm getting a good lot of vibration when it's just ticking over, just back from a funeral and had to drive very slow, you have to give it a tiny bit of juice to stop the rattle, wondering is it possible to increase the idle speed by a few rpm to get rid of the shake. It's definitely made a big difference once your moving though.

I didn't even know it was faulty but when it was on the ramp in Daltons George noticed it had disformed and he was aware of a bad batch so he swapped it out.

Did a deal on that Cupra ST. All going to plan I should have it Saturday. Not saving anything on buying here, with VRT it's the opposite actually, but it's a really nice spec that I probably couldn't find here even if there was one for sale. Bucket seats, upgraded wheels, front and rear sensors, nav, reversing camera, seat sound, lane assist, black pack.

Got a few pics of them from the salesman and they're like new. On the pre-sale prep there was a seat repair mentioned on it alright so it sounds like that's been done. Sure it might encourage me to lose a few pounds:D
