A lunchtime trip to Monasterevin to capture the Belmond Grand Hibernian Trial from Portarlington to Inchicore. Plus 218 was working the 1300 Heuston - Cork service.

216 made another evening run to Portarlington tonight gathering some more data after its recent issues, departing Inchicore at 1955. Tomorrow is D Day with the first public run of the Belmond Grand Hibernian to fare paying passengers.

BELMOND GRAND HIBERNIAN carries first Guests on week long trip of Ireland.

Photos from the launch of the Belmond Grand Hibernian at Heuston prior to its first departure for Cork.

The train arrived from Inchicore shortly after 1030 with 226. 216 was then coupled onto the other end and the set was washed and placed back to Platform 2 for loading of catering supplies and for final preparations to take place.

The first guests on board the train were a group from the USA based "The Society of International Railway Travelers". The group arrived from the Merrion Hotel in Dublin led down to Platform 2 by a Bag Pipe musician shortly before 1400.

Once there a informal meet and greet took place with a Champagne reception and Irish Dancing.

The train departed from Heuston at 1420 hours bound for Cork, its first stop on the week long tour. Over the course of the week the Guests will visit Killarney, Galway, Westport, Belfast & Waterford.

The train was hauled by ex works 226, IE deciding not to risk the blue liveried 216 which has being giving some issues lately.

Most certainly not, even the RPSI cravens display the full EVN's, though to be fair the RPSI could exempt themselves on the heritage grounds.

Yes they are exempt, the EU Directive aswell as the Irish and Northern Ireland transposition of the directive does not apply to heritage rolling stock or rolling stock used for touristic purposes.

The RPSI and Belmonds use of EVNs is optional.

Well to put all the above talk to bed the set has had full EVN's applied which bear no relation to their previous numbers.

The set had numbers applied on Monday and each vehicle now carries the following EVN numbers:

Already fixed several times, didn't want to risk it happening again with the passengers onboard until satisfied the problem has been fully eliminated.

216 is also in need of it's decal application.

I was out with my 4 year old on our bikes just a short time ago train spotting, as you do, and I saw this blue train cross the viaduct in Balbriggan. It looks stunning and classy. I had no idea until then about the Grand Hibernian. My first thoughts were I must take a trip on that and wow was it beautiful. So I head back home to check it all out online.

I wish it the best. However I suggest Jim Deegan lay off having a pop at Belmond. The Times article didn't quote him, but he did say in reference to the Grand Hibernian, "They sleep on a train, we sleep in Castles". Nice soundbite, but Railtours Ireland Vs Belmond....not a hope for Jim. Personally I thought he should have kept it polite, considering he's in the same market.

The heritage train 5000 for 6 nights at least you can watch
Tv in a castle and all other mod cons you expect in a castle/5star and still travel on a train .
On the belmond you pay more to use the service to stay and sleep on the train .
Calculator be out .

They are registered in Ireland indicated by the 60 in their EVN numbers. If they were Northern Ireland/UK registered they would have 70 in the EVN.

It's hardly a rip-off as nobody is forced to use it. Expensive perhaps. but that's the going rate for their trains and their wealthy clientele seem happy to pay.

Reading this is like listening to Liveline for christ sake. Reminds me of when the politician demanded to know why Westlife tickets were so inexpensive compared to a Roger Waters show at the same venue and vowing to do something about it.

Probably something to do with supporting the "locals". No harm, but the Belmond product is well established and has its clientele. Personally I will stick to what I said earlier in the thread. Jim Deegan should concentrate on his own venture and not get embroiled in having digs at the competitor.

you don't go on a jaunt like this to watch TV and many people would appreciate staying in one room for the whole week rather than continually having to pack and un pack. Personally, I would find it impossible to have an opinion until I have sampled both trains.

I doubt the patrons care if one or the other is dearer. I think the Mk3s may be more comfortable than the Cravens.

I'm curious about the loos on the Cravens as they used to be quite appalling - tiny, grey and plastic/formica. I don't really see that they can have been improved due to space constraints.

They had quilted velvet on board and Lifebuoy soap which is better than what they normally use.
