And do you have a number in mind as to the correct cost of keeping our infrastructure, would you be willing to pay 800-1000 euro and be fine with that in a couple of years.

    Genuine question?

    Genuine answer:

Yes, if thats what it really costs. I have no expectation of something for nothing. I want water, so will pay for it. If it reaches those levels, I will pay for it. But would expect payments assistance, subsidy, whatever, so that unemplyed, pensioners, those on low income, are in varying degrees, helped to pay it. So in fact, I will be paying even more than that given that some of my taxes would be going to help them do so. But I am OK with that also.

Leap frogging on a bigger issue? Good tactic to boost the numbers now that people are pulling out due to protester violence and government concessions.
Hijacking another cause. What a surprise!

Like FG are doing with the 1916 rising centenary commemoration plans.

Not even a mention of the men involved in the rising in the promotional videos FFS.

Reduce motor tax and VAT which went up to pay for water over the years and then we'll call it even.

Na, change motor tax back to road tax.
Let everyone who uses the roads pay it, not just motorists.

no "commies" at all, and trade unionists aren't parasitic but great men and women standing up for their unions members.

    Yes dear, that's right.

    Paul Murphy is a commie.
Why do you think water charges are so high? To pay for the bloated salaries and pensions negotiated by unions.

  • Registered Users Posts: 990 ✭✭✭LostinKildare

What IS fair that everyone pays for what THEY use.

I agree completely. I don't have a problem with water charges in theory, based on "user pays," but that's not what's happening.

This has nothing to do with conservation, it's not going to be fairly assessed, it's the absolute wrong time to hang another charge on the hardpressed citizenry, and they set up a monstrously inefficient, overstaffed and overpaid, crony-riddled quango to administer it. The govt has made a complete mess of this.

Yeah I will take off work on the 10th and join the protest.

So you don't mind paying for this guy??? I have more examples, other inept county managers.
Hubert Kearns was Sligo County Manager for 17 years and when he retired in 2013 he received a lump sum of €270,000 and a pension of €68,000 per year. His time as Sligo manager was controversial and he left behind a County debt of €80 million. "It's not the end of the world, nobody died," he said about the council's financial woes. At one stage he refused to attend council meetings in a dispute with an independent Councillor and spent more than €50,000 council money hiring HR consultant Declan Naughton to monitor meetings. Asked to comment on reports that his own pay as Sligo Manager, at €136,000, was €30,000 more than that of the Spanish prime minister, Mr Kearns said his salary was fixed by Government. “I am surprised that the Spanish prime minister earns so little.” So after retiring from Sligo he has his pockets full, thanks to the taxpayer - that's you and me, So, has Mr Kearns taken up fishing? No, Hubert has apparently found gainful employment with Irish Water on over €100k.
Wake up and smell the coffee...

What the government should be doing is looking for about a 60 billion write down of our debt by socialising it across the EU. This is broadly what has been suggested by Peter Mathews - others from the financial sector have suggested a write down also. But that would take bottle - the kisses and cuddles would come to an end. We the tax payers here will continue to be the soft option unless we stand up for ourselves.

What angered me more about this issue was the governments lack of knowledge of the real ireland and the situation of irelands 'real' people!

The sheer madness of trying to lump a 500e + bill on the people. ******* crazy ****!!

Joan Burton comments regarding camera phones.

    Enda kennys unwillingness to listen.

The nasty media propaganda against the people of ireland.

    Rigging senate elections.

    Creating jobs for the boys.

The fraud FG and labour committed with their pre election lies (That should be an arrestable offense)

The fact that they have lost the trust of the people means the wise members of society wouldnt pay a 10e charge for water.

Not paying my water bill will not solve the problems of excessive pay in public service.

I suppose they were guilty of being too honest and telling people what the real price was.
It would have run more smoothly had they hidden the true cost and introduced it at a trivial bill, and then ramped it up to the €500. But then people would be bitching about untrustworthy politicians and devious government. On this topic, they were up front with the reality. And when people cant handle the truth, they complain about having been told it.

    What??? Are you kidding me???

He RETIRED on huge money and they brought him back into the new IRISH WATER RETIREMENT HOME quango. They repeated past mistakes! He is not the only one.

From Fine Gael's New Politics document...

The fundamental goal of Fine Gael’s New Politics is to build a New Republic where the
peoples’ concerns are placed at the centre of government. In a Republic, the people are
supposed to be supreme. Judged by that simple standard, Ireland today is a Republic in name
only. The expressions “Golden Circle”, “Crony Government” and “Cosy Capitalism” all
describe the same thing: The abduction of our Republic by both public and private sector
vested interests, aided and abetted by the present Government.

Dont overlook Hogan, refusing to pay his service charge on his Portuguese villa, while simultaneously ramming one down this country's citizens throats.

Reilly, involved in shenanigans locating primary care centres in his own constituency , not to mention his stubbs gazette appearance.

And the cherry on the cake.

    Shatter.

He is doing a great job.
And genuinely to be praised for sticking to his task despite the ingratitude and criticism from some of the brainless crowds getting upset when they are told the true cost of one of the services the government is providing.

You're for the birds. I think you are suffering from Stockholm Syndrone.

Figures from the Department of the Environment show that Mr David O’Connor, the retired manager of Fingal County Council, is to receive a lump sum payment of €296,082. He had one of the top local government jobs in the country, receiving an annual salary of €150,977 — second only to the €175,721 received by the manager of Dublin City Council. Mr O’Connor was appointed to the post in 2006 and will receive annual pension payments of €73,394.

    Guess where David works??

Never heard of the guy, but I'm going to go for Irish Water ?

IW needs senior experienced managers of public services to manage such an crucial business. Makes sense to recruit him if they did.

Experienced??? They were utterly inept in the councils. What makes them different after the golden handshake?

Even the CEO John Tierney has a less than impressive track record as Dublin City manager.

    Taken from another thread.

Cross post here as this gets to the heart of the fiscal issues.

In 2013 we took in 37.8 billiion in taxes (1). That's our real spending money. We spent 20.3 billion on social welfare in 2013 (2). Yes that is 54% out of all of our taxes is spent on social welfare.

Whinge all you like and banks and bondholders this is the sickening reality for the irish tax payer.
