You missed that, it happened waaaay back last year

Yes I know, but should we not try chip away at it or should we throw the baby out with the bath water? IW was implemented terribly I don't think anyone can argue otherwise but every reshuffle, wasted minute installing meters etc comes out of tax money we don't have. When the USC goes back up or some other stealth tax comes in we will know who to thank (no not just the current government).

This is a deflection from the water issue, as I said above there are plenty of issues with IW and FG but should we just stop paying taxes because of it?

    Is it a tax?
Pro water taxers on here were continually telling us it wasn't a tax.
    I thought it was a utility bill????

Leaving ethics aside for a minute and just focusing on actual implementation this has been a spectacular debacle.

    Water "conservation" grant.
    Wtf is that about then?
What is the point of incurring the cost of resourcing this "grant" in the Dept of Social Protection and changing IT systems to adminster such a grant?
Why not just reduce all fees across the board by €100?
What does it have to do with conserving water if its awarded to every household?

Irish Water have already stated that this is a utility and therefore should be applied to the user. Landlords were informed they would not be pursued for any outstanding charges by tenants.
Lien on property - If a renter refuses to pay eventually the accumulated charge will be paid by the landlord when the property is sold.
Wtf? Some turnaround there. I'm sure LLs are delighted.

€700m spent to date - Based on projection it would take 5 years with compliance to simply cover this already incurred cost - Yet this company is supposed to "go to the markets" to raise investment capital - Who in their right minds would invest in such a ridiculously managed company?

Flat rate fee - i.e. this had sweet fa to do with conservation then and is just another tax.

Why spend €700m on setting up a company instead of spending that on repairs?
And then raising the rest through the progressive tax system already in place?

On another note - who the f*ck else is there left to vote for

    Fine Fail - Pure shady
Fine Gael - Liars and incompetent
Labour - Betrayed themselves don't mind anyone else
Sinn Fein - Remedial class economists
    Green Party - Irrelevant
    Independents - What's the point?
AAA - Jesus Christ is that all I'm left with? Might as well book the flights now :(

It is a utility bill that will replace what was formally paid for with tax, so it is technically. It is a civic duty or a socialist society essential if you like :D They should have ran with that slogan it might have been more popular ;)

I'm getting pissed off with them all banging on about how you can "beat the cap", reduce the fee and it's all about conservation.

What about those of us who don't have meters, and will never have meters?

And don't even get me started about the tenants/landlord situation - that's going to blow up in someone's face (and I'm betting it won't be the Minister's )

Despite all the government concessions, it's clear to me that the protesters smell blood and want to bring down the government. The next government will be fascinating.

Has there ever been a government climbdown as big as this? I doubt it. It must be embarrassing.

The whole point of the water charge was to prevent waste but capping the charge makes that a nonsense.

    Embarrassing to be Irish.
A nation of gombeens who havent a clue how to run their country. Half assed effort to do the right thing, but a bit of shouting and foot stamping from the more ignorant end of the spectrum is enough to have them temper their governance. Funny if it werent so sad for so many people who know now better and probably believe they have achieved something for themselves.

Is my hearing wrong or did I hear Enda say twice that we already "pay for water". He doesn't have a clue.

My blood boils everytime when I see that c*** :( especially when he opens his mouth.
He cannot even talk without a script in front of him, he was not even asked hard questions, probably agreed beforehand with RTE to give him an easy time

Kenny and his ilk have no clue whatsoever of the real world that the rest of us live in.

The simple matter is this: if there's not enough compliance then IW will shut down because it won't be able to pay wages. If the government try to refinance them there's be a general election and they'll get booted out.

The company will be sold and charges will rise considerably because it's the only way it can recoup any money.

Indeed he doesn't, I wouldn't want him as my defence lawyer!

You have to wonder whether the government sat back months ago laughing about how they were going to set up a quango or retirement home for inept council managers and overstaff it and overpay it completely and charge Mr and Mrs Taxpayer for the privilege?

She was great. A bit of it, from the Dail transcript:
    http://oireachtasdebates.oireachtas.ie/debates%20authoring/debateswebpack.nsf/takes/dail2014111900038?opendocument
The Tánaiste made the point last night that she was shocked to hear of raw sewerage going into the sea. I was shocked that she was, as the dogs in the street know that to be the case. Why does the Government not fix it? One would think there had never been any investment in infrastructure in the State. There was and when it happened it worked well. The Government and its predecessor managed to slash investment in water infrastructure by 70% since 2008. Not only that, but capital programmes which were underway were axed when Irish Water came on the scene. Projects planned by local authorities were shelved and the Government has not put a single water butt onto a Government building not to mind dealing with anything else in terms of conservation. Instead, the Government has decided to continue to throw away hundreds of millions of euro of taxpayers' money on the installation of water meters notwithstanding previous studies saying it was an uneconomic proposition in the context of revenue generation and despite the fact that the Government has abandoned it anyway by reverting to a flat charge whereby millionaires pay the same as those on social welfare.

As a matter of interest, what do you think would have happened IF the ATM's went dry in 2008 ?

I think you give them too much credit. I don't think they were trying to be malicious in intent but more likely inept.

Well that was one hell of a grilling for Enda on the Government Information Channel

RTE justifying their license fee funding already. Need to add them to the scrap list right after Irish Water.

Hmmmm there's that "Millionaires" line again.....how about revising it to....
Government has abandoned it anyway by reverting to a flat charge whereby those on social welfare will pay the same as those in employment

I'm not one for needlessly slagging politicians who actually put their heads above the parapet and do interviews - but she's spectacularly poor on Prime Time
