If you are flying directly home you can get an emergency document that will allow you to travel straight home.

If you planned to stop anywhere, wave bubye to that dream and expect to fork out for a new flight straight home.

Getting the document by Tuesday might be a struggle though. Where are you based?

He is based in Brisbane. Just been on to embassy has to go to Sydney tomorrow and they will give him a temporary passport not sure how it works obviously he is flying through abu dhabi or somewhere like that. He is obviously worried about getting back into Australia in two weeks time!

May as well get him to start the process now; https://www.dfa.ie/passports-citizenship/how-to-apply-for-a-passport/

Transiting is fine as he wont be trying to clear immigration anywhere.

Once he gets home, he may be able to apply for a same day passport at the passport office as he'll have proof of flights back I assume? The an post 10-day passport may be too tight.

He will need to have AU immigration move his visa over to his new passport though as well before he flies back. What visa is he on? I've never heard of them swapping over a 417 but they may well do.

Yes he is just worried about going back. Would rather not come if he can't get back. On second year of working visa. I think they are giving him a temp one that will get him home and back and then replace.

Do you mean a temp passport? He might get one that will get him home but there is zero chance of an emergency travel document getting him back into Australia.

Thanks to everyone who answered. Just as he was about to fly to Sydney to the embassy he had one final look and found the passport! So panic over. Embassy confirmed he can still use it as they had not logged it. Interestingly Batgurl they had said that the temp passport would allow him to come home and go back to Australia and his new passport would be reissued in Australia.
