Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Golf MK4 Limp Mode

Over the last month or so I noticed bad fuel economy but just ignored it. Just yesterday I noticed the car going into limp mode, I immediately pulled over turned the car off and on again. It went back to normal until the engine was put under any load at all it will go into limp mode. When the car is restarted it has usual power and the turbo boosts as normal.

I doubt that it's the MAF as the car has its usual level of power up before it goes into limp mode.

I've been told there are a couple of sensors for the turbo which may cause the car to go to limp mode. How would I go about testing to see which one is causing the problem?

The car is a 2000 VW Golf MK4 GtTDi PD engine, engine code AJM.

Id suggest a diagnostic plug in. If the car is going into limp home mode, the computer will have logged a freeze frame of the parameters at which point the fault occured. This will aid your diagnosis massively. Where are you based?

Freeze frame isn't an option on the mk4 golf unfortunately, however a fault code will still be stored.

Based in cavan but cannot get to a garage with the proper computer until the weekend. Would you say its still safe to drive in limp mode?

I would have thought all OBD 2 compliant cars would have had to log at least one freeze frame as per the legislation, no? Is it safe to drive...youre unlikely to get a definite answer for that one. If you must drive it, keep an eye on oil pressure indicator and coolant temperature I guess at the very least.
