When buying a house where there are appliances included in the sale , for example a washing machine, how do I ensure that it is working, put a wash cycle on?

I'd settle for a rinse cycle. Takes a lot less time. Same for dishwasher. You don't get total certainty, but there is a high probability that if they work for a rinse, they also work for a wash.
